Black and Red Swap

  • Aug. 12th, 2009 at 10:03 PM
New Moon isn't until November...what to do, what to do? If you live in the U.S., it's likely to be cold waiting in line for the midnight release. We should definitely do something about that...

Knitters and crocheters, warm up your hooks and sticks as the [info]twilight_crafts moderators proudly present our first ever community swap!

Photobucket

WHAT: 6" knit and/or crochet squares made with black and red worsted weight acrylic (double if you're in the U.K.) yarn (so everyone receives the same size with the same washability!). This [info]twilight_crafts mod recommends a soft acrylic like I Love This Yarn, Caron Simply Soft, Red Heart Soft or equivalent.

WHEN: Between now and October 2, 2009

HOW: This is intended to be a low-stress swap, meaning there are no actual sign ups until the end of the swap. If you want to participate, start making squares and when the deadline arrives, we'll collect names. This is a group swap, so you will be mailing blocks to everyone in your group. There will be three groups, based on the number of squares you make:

Forks swap group - 12 squares (2 each mailed to 6 swappers)
La Push swap group - 24 squares (3 each mailed to 8 swappers)
Port Angeles swap group - 36 squares (4 each mailed to 9 swappers)

Depending on the numbers of participants, the group numbers might have to be rearranged slightly. However, in no case will you be sending to more than 9 people.

WHO: All skill levels are welcome, as long as the blocks are well made and the ends are woven in. International swappers are welcome.

PATTERNS: You are welcome to use any 6" pattern as long as the finished square has both red and black yarn. To help get you started:

Pimp this swap! The more people that participate, the more fun this will be!

Please note that you need to be a member of [info]twilight_crafts to participate. The final call for swappers in October will be viewable to members only. If you haven't signed up and want to swap, now is the time!

When you make it to your destination, grab an icon!

I looked it up and worsted in the U.S. is the same as Double for you. I'll make an addition to the post. Thanks for asking!

I'm in Australia and a lot of our knitting is based on UK items. Worsted Weight is slightly thicker than a DK yarn, but DK is probably the closest equivalent. Double check you gauge to begin with and you should be fine :)

So Worsted weight is 8 ply wool??

it's almost closer to a 10ply or aran weight, but a good quality 8ply should be fine. if it is a thinner one (some of the 8 ply acrylics from some of the cheaper places tend to be a bit thinner here and if they were used then the guage would have to be adjusted. Just check you're guage and you should be fine.

Thanks for that ... I now know what to go and buy ... it would be the cheaper double knit I'd be getting so probably better to get a cheaper Aran wool ... :D

We can't get much aran weight acrylic here so it's really only DK for me, but the slightly less cheap ones seems to knit up fine to about the same weight as the worsted.

I am so in. I have this stash of Caron in red that I've been hoarding for the right project. I believe this is it.

I want to participate, but I have NO idea how to do anything other than a scarf! Changing colors and different designs? PFT

I'm such a bad crafter.

Perhaps this is the perfect time to learn!! :)

You are NOT a bad crafter. :)

Definitely NOT a bad crafter! Now is a great time to learn. 6" squares are a great intro because they're small and you can learn to follow a pattern that has only a few instructions.

here here maam! this is exactly how i learned to crochet actually. joining in a CAL and in a few duels for HP swaps. there are tons of folks here that would be more than happy to help you if you get stuck too. why dont you try doing a simple plain old granny square. all the other blocks are going to be based on this idea (but with different stitches) heres the tute i learned off of http://www.purlbee.com/granny-square-project/

and dont worry about asking for more help. i wish i had my webcam and id walk you through a granny square step by step. and you know what? try it and if you are just so full of fail you dont want to send any you dont have to. thats the beauty of these sorts of swaps where you sign up at the end :0)

That is the link to the solid granny square but there is a link on the video for more granny squares ... The woman who has done the video is brilliant and taught me how to crochet ... she slows the video down so ya can see how it's done

Hope that helps :D

I am in. I might be using your Bella's Compass as a center block for this afghan, makes sense to put the compass in the in the middle... and if it's Bella's, makes sense to put it in this afghan right?

You know, I'm thinking of creating a modified version that comes out 6". I better get on that!

WOW! Would you mind posting about it? I know there is a crochet equivalent that I checked out from the library. Of course now I don't have it anymore because I turned it back in.

I made 4 blocks tonight. 6" goes fast. :)

Are we limited to completely and entirely read and black or can we throw some white in there?
I found a block I really like but I'm afraid it will lose something if I can't add a row or two of another color.

Just curious. I'm sure it will look fine either way.

It's just red and black for this swap, but if you'd like to make an extra block to include that has white in it, you could do that and then the other members of your swap group could decide individually if they want to use the extra block in their finished product.

Thanks for asking, it's a good question!
