966 MB Nor'easter today!
Stu Ostro in The Weather Channel Blog:

"WHAT CATEGORY HURRICANE WOULD THIS STORM BE?
Stu Ostro, Senior Meteorologist

The pressure at the center of the big storm this morning, per offshore observations just south of western Long Island, dropped to at least 28.54 inches, or around 966 millibars. Mighty low, and when that happens with non-tropical lows, often comparisons are made with hurricanes: "If this would have been a hurricane, it'd have been a Category X" ..."

Great piece by Stu Ostro here.

Impressive storm! The Virginia Tech shooting was the big story today of course, but they have also shown some of the large flooding and snow being produced by the storm. I'm surprised folks haven't posted more about it! I would've been all over it if'd been on the East Coast. But, my reporting skills are probably better for West Coast weather anyways;-)

Actually for the Viginia Tech shooting...I heard that the lower visibility from the snowfall in town as well as strong winds made it unsafe to send in helicopters to send injured people to hospitals far away so they were restricted to ambulances only.

Yeah, 966 is pretty low! If a non-tropical low bombed out like that over Texas this time of year the result would probably be phenomenal!

I'm glad Stu pointed out a few of the most important reasons why it is unrealistic to compare extra-tropical cyclones to their tropical cousins based on barometric pressure.

Missed the news on Virginia Tech. So, so tired today. All I can do to catch up on my favorite subjects ;)

The pressure is pretty low. Like it feels awkward. I wonder if it always is like this in low pressures? Like... water behaves differently. Hard to explain.

nevertheless early early this morning, it was windy as hell outside! The weather channel actually mentioned little ol' Rhody with our 60 mph wind gust. I believe it! It was a monster!!! The rain was falling horizontally. I didn't even need to use my wipers while driving at one point.

I hear ya! I really notice the way I feel and even behave differently with significant changes in barometric pressure, so if I can notice subtle changes also, I'm not the least bit surprised by your observation of the way even water behaves.

28.54 is some lowwwwww baro! lol

So tell me truthfully, did it not seem at least somewhat like a landfalling tropical storm? I saw TWC showing how the Big Apple picked up their second highest daily rainfall total, ever, today!

It felt quite unusual and many people complained of ear popping.

What's unusual is because the low is just going wherever it feels like, the wind speed, direction and temperature are changing rather consistently. It hasn't happened much since this afternoon, but we'll have temperature spikes and slides out of nowhere...

I feel energized by storms and I love the sense of being enveloped by something so much larger than me. I have been getting up earlier, and my mind was much sharper (and even snarkier) than usual yesterday.

Up here in Portland, ME, the shootings got their fair share of coverage, but most of our media were focusing on the storm. Houses damaged and destroyed, roads washed away, huge trees uprooted or snapped in half, monster flooding, lots of areas without power... it's been impressive, to say the least. I had to walk in to class from another road because the normal bus route is closed off. Boats were sunk at the docks, and waves were amazingly high- Portland is a naturally sheltered harbor, after all. I saw cresting waves in Back Cove and the Fore River, which is definitely not the usual order of things.

But at least they kept that bloody crane upright this time.

Impressive! If I didn't know better, just reading your summary of the effects of the storm in your general area, I would easily conclude you were talking about a landfalling hurricane of some time ago!
