Well, sort of. Steve Green's TAFF Tales talk tonight at 9 p.m. con time will be preceded by Ang Rosin's announcement of the candidates for the 2010 Going Under Fan Fund race. This is likely to be a high-profile fan fund race, given that the destination is the Australian Worldcon next year.

Usual Caveat: All of these plans are subject to us getting a suffciently good internet connection to be able to stream video live from the convention. However, assuming everything works, we will be aiming to stream video from several panels and other events:

Yours Sincerely, Charles Darwin: Public Scientist, Private Man.
From his voyage round the world on HMS Beagle, to his last research on earthworms, Charles Darwin left a remarkable record of his life and work, his hopes, dreams, and fears - and even what made him laugh - in a collection of private letters and papers. Dr. Alison Pearn, Assistant Director of the Darwin Correspondence Project, gives us a unique and private insight into the man who was credited with changing the way we see the world (and reveals whether he really did bear any resemblance to Paul Bettany...)

Novacon
default
[info]ceemage
Our next series of events in The Virtual Fan Lounge will focus around Novacon, the annual convention in the English Midlands, which celebrates its 39th year this year from a new venue in Nottingham.

Novacon takes place over the weekend of Friday 13th to Sunday 15th November, 2009.

We are still building our exact schedule for the weekend, but will definitely several hours of live panel coverage from the convention, mainly focused on the Saturday. We will post a 'definitive' schedule just before the convention – plus any updates during the convention – here.

More details in the latest issue of Virtual Tucker Hotel.

A Marvel-ous Panel

[info]ceemage
We may have some more live events to announce Real Soon Now. In the meantime, here's another panel recording, this time from the 2009 British International Comics Show, on 70 Years of Marvel, as recorded by the Geek Syndicate Podcast people.

British Fantasy Awards Live
Hugo Trophy
[info]kevin_standlee
Assuming the technology works as it should, SF AwardsWatch will be providing live coverage of the British Fantasy Awards at 1 PM Pacific time today (4 PM EDT, 9 PM British Summer Time). I'm "in the studio" as an off-site moderator. I hope we'll 'see' you there.

Triggered by a comment on a previous entry, a quick pointer that Kevin Standlee's been uploading the Business Meeting videos from the 2009 Worldcon to here.

Tingling with Anticipation
default
[info]ceemage
Anticipation, the 67th Worldcon, takes place in Montreal over this weekend. We haven't been able to arrange coverage from the Fanzine Lounge at this event. However, this doesn't mean that you can't get "virtually involved" in the Worldcon in other ways:

Steve "for TAFF" Green Video Diary

Steve Green, our TAFF delegate to the Worldcon, is doing a series of video diaries from his trip. You can catch them at the TAFF community on livejournal at http://community.livejournal.com/taff2009/ or directly on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/JohnLogieBaird

ConReporter.com

Although there's no plans for a video stream on this site, they will be using the CoverItLive system to provide text coverage of many of the important parts of the Worldcon. This is in addition to the regular "mash-up" of blogs from a wide variety of bloggers attending the convention. The blogs are at the main index page at http://www.conreporter.com/, whilst the CoverItLive feeds are linked to at http://www.conreporter.com/?page_id=9

Reno in 2011 Parties

Finally, what Louis B. Mayer would refer to as a 'definite maybe.' The Reno in 2011 may be doing some ustream video coverage from some of their parties at the convention. More details to follow if/when we have them.

Volunteers needed for Anticipation Fanzine Lounge
default
[info]ceemage
Is there anyone about who could help with the set-up of a Virtual Fanzine Lounge at Anticipation, the Montreal Worldcon? Lloyd Penney has just been able to confirm that there will be free wifi at the Fanzine Lounge, but is understandably cautious about getting this all set up by himself. Is there anyone who could drop in to show him how to set this all up? I can help (to an extent) remotely from over here, but there's nothing like having someone on site to talk to.

The hours for the fanzine lounge itself are:
  • Thursday 11am - 6pm
  • Fri, Sat, Sun 10am - 6pm
  • Monday 10am - 4pm
All presumably EDT (Eastern Daylight Saving Time). Actual broadcast times to be determined if/when we get a volunteer...

Baycon on Monday

A slight change to the planned schedule - we are going to be dreadfully unfannish, and leave the Fanzine Lounge in order to go to a panel. A fannish panel, mind you.

The Hugos: Do They Matter?
So, what does "Hugo Winner" actually mean? Is a Hugo more important than a Ditmar? And who votes on these things, anyway? Join us and find out.
Chris Garcia (M), Randy Smith, Kevin Standlee, Milt Stevens
  • Monday 25th May 1.00 pm PDT (Pacifc Daylight Time)
  • Monday 25th May, 4.00 pm EDT (Eastern Daylight Time)
  • Monday 25th May, 8.00 pm UTC (Co-ordinated Universal Time)
  • Monday 25th May, 9.00 pm BST (British Summer Time)
  • Tuesday 26th May, 4.00 am WAST (Western Australian Standard Time)
  • Tuesday 26th May, 6.00 am EADT (Eastern Australian Daylight Time)
  • Tuesday 24th May, 8.00 am NZDT (New Zealand Daylight Time)
Usual caveats apply - there are many things that could go wrong with this, not least that we haven't checked the wifi in that function room yet. But we have several contingency plans in place, so we'll see what we can do.

Spread the word...

Webcasting from Baycon
default
[info]ceemage
Kat Templeton at Baycon and me "in the studio" will be doing some webcasting from this year's Baycon, being held this weekend at the The Hyatt Regency Hotel, Santa Clara, California. This will mainly be focused on the Baycon Fanzine Lounge, but we may be able to cover a panel or two as well. More details - including a draft schedule - in Virtual Tucker Hotel 24, or behind the cut )

Testing, testing, one-two, one-two...
default
[info]ceemage
[info]katster and myself will be doing some test broadcasting starting at the top of the hour (i.e. about 10 minutes after the timestamp on this posting) as a dry-run for some possible webcasting from this weekend's Baycon. You are all welcome to join us at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/the-virtual-fan-lounge as an impromptu peanut gallery -- if nothing else, feedback on things like sound levels and picture quality would be welcome.

#lxtra chat room transcript available
default
[info]ceemage
Just to note that, as usual, we had tuckerbot running the whole weekend (thanks this time to Kat Templeton), so have a complete transcript of the #lxtra text chat room. We're not going to post this anywhere on the web, to keep it away from the all-seeing eye of Google and the like. But if any fan would like a copy, just e-mail me ( ceemage "at" livejournal.com ) and I'll send one along.

Feedback Welcomed
Beanie

So, what did you think? Have you any suggestions for improving the service in future, possibly if [info]ceemage and I dust it off for Novacon 39?

Sunday schedule

Not sure if we will actually have any events for the Sunday yet -- we are trying to sort out coverage of one of the Sunday night social events, but this is still a bit "up in the air" at the moment. As ever, watch this space for the latest developments. Meanwhile, we have one definite event for Monday, which I'll post about later.

Ostensibly as a courtesy to our panellists (but in reality because I keep forgetting), we've not been recording most of the panels. But we do have recordings available of some of our other happenings:

Additions to the Saturday schedule

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/LXtra

Between the end of the Fanzines 101 panel item (say about 3.15 p.m. local time) and the start of the Fan Funds panel item at 6.00 p.m. local, we'll be leaving the webcam on for general chat and two specific planned items (exact times to be confirmed):

Vote for TAFF: Steve Green and Tom Womack will try to convince you to vote in the current TAFF election. Maybe even for one of them.

Reno in 2011: Geri Sullivan skypes in to the convention to talk to the Reno in 2011 bid team at the convention, and find out how the sale of those all-important pre-supports are going...

Exact times when we have them, either here or in the ustream channel itself.
