It's a sad fact that the academic and anthropology references in The Sentinel are about as reliable and true to life as the police procedural arrangements. However, I was thinking about the dissertation disaster in the series finale, and Jim's anger at Blair's chapter that he read in Nightshift and started wondering about what exactly Blair or Jim might have expected in terms of informed consent and privacy. There are no answers under the cut, but just some references from web sites about actual 'Anthropological Thought' in this area. It gives some interesting room for plot bunny development, if nothing else.
I have no post-graduate experience although I know some NZ people who do and so have vague ideas as to how this stuff works, and you really do have to handwave vast parts of Blair's academic experience as presented in the show, including the fact that he's doing a PhD on Jim at all. Still, I guess we're not watching for the anthropology now, are we?

Good afternoon,
I've been spending the last two days on the net but in the background I've been half watching History Channel, Ice Road Truckers.
It's another setting that I think it would be interesting to AU with Jim, Blair and company.
Any thoughts?

Do you think that Jim could maybe see stars even during the daytime?
and
Do you think there's any connection between the fact that Jim's jungle in his dreams is blue, and the 'eye of god' that surrounds him in the temple is blue, and that his eyes are blue? Or that Blair ---his soulmate guide best friend associate partner--has blue eyes? Or do the creators just *really* like blue?
Just some thoughts. :)

Hi fellow Sentinel fans, My car was in for some repairs and when I went to pick it up I saw this from the other side of the garage and went running. Here it is, well almost. Blair's Corvair! The mechanic restores old cars and this 65 Corvair looked just like Blair's only it isn't a convertible. Still I was pretty surprised to see it there and thought it would be fun to post it. It is green like his and eventually it will have all the racing stripes like his had. Made my day.

I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on the question of where Blair was raised. I know that fanon is very rich with stories that detail his travels with Naomi. I love those stories and am so glad that they are being written, but...
But is there any support for the view that Blair traveled about as a child? Does any episode actually address this at all? I remember in "Light My Fire" he talks to the furniture store owner about how thrilled he was when he got to be old enough to stay up late at night and watch the late night movies the store sponsored. That sure sounds as if he grew up in Cascade.
And I think (really not sure about this one) that there is some mention in "3 Point Shot" about him being an all-city point guard. (or did I get this from a fic?) At any rate, Orvelle Wallace was his childhood idol and Wallace played for the Cascade Jags. Again, that would give some reason to think that Blair grew up in Cascade.
He is taking college classes at Rainier at 16. Sure, he may have moved to Cascade at 16 in order to go to Rainier, but it really would make more sense that if he was going to start college early, he would still be living at home.
All the places that he talks about traveling to fit within the realm of his anthropological studies. By this time, he has been at Rainier for 10 years (more or less). He has had plenty of time for travel.
And there is that damn photo album full of Blair baby pictures in "Spare Parts." Where the hell did it come from? Sure we can just ignore it as the weird bit of storytelling that it is, but wouldn't it at least come close to making sense if Cascade was where Blair grew up and maybe Naomi still had a storage shed there or something like that? (hhhmmm, that might make a nice fic! If anyone wants the idea, they are welcome to play with it)
Interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this. It's been bugging me for a while.

The spirit guide element is an interesting one and used more heavily in The Sentinel than in any other show I've seen. (The only other one that I really remember seeing it in at all is Star Trek: Voyager with Chakotay refusing to name what his spirit animal was because he might offend it.)
Given that I'm pretty certain that the show didn't follow an real Spirit Guide belief system: I'm interested in your take on spirit guides as used in The Sentinel.
We all know that Jim and Alex have Jaguar spirit guides (with Jim's being melanistic or a panther) and Blair is has a wolf.
Do you think that the show got those right?
Should Alex have had the same spirit animal just because she shared sentinel abilities with JIm? Or should she have been something else?
If all sentinels have jaguar spirits, do all guides have wolves?
Several fics have given spirit guides to other members of the show. Do you have a character-animal pairing that you particularly like?
Why on earth do panther!Jim and jaguar!Alex transform into human form with clothes on, but wolf!Blair morphs naked in Jim's visions?
And of course, why did Jim's animal spirit have the ability to bring Blair back, and what exactly is in that water that Jim wouldn't go in?

Sorry for the double post, but does anyone have any info on the Chopec tribe? The episodes where they are featured? What language they speak? I'm trying to gather information so I can realistically portray them in a fic, so anything you've got will be a help. thanks!

I just recently joined with the Sentinel fan community, and so, I have never watched all of the original Sentinel episodes. I have only been able to locate the Sentinel on pirated sites, and I would like to see that change. I would be more than willing to sign an organized petition to at least get the seasons on DVD, and was wondering if there was anything like that around. If there is not, then I was wondering if anyone would be willing to get a start on the action so to speak. I would really be willing to speak up and tell the people in charge that they should get Sentinel on DVD, I'm just not sure where I could, or even if my voice would be heard when I'm on my own. If anyone could tell me, I'd be more than grateful, but if this is not an option, I would like to know if anyone knows where I could view the Sentinel episodes all at once.
Sorry if this is rambling, but I would appreciate you're help! thanks EDIT: April, 18. someone informed me that it's stupid to tell people that you're doing uncool/unkind stuff... sorry, and thanks bunches!

Which episode, in your opinion, is THE slashiest of them all? Which one would you show to someone to prove to them the true love of Jim and Blair? LOL
For me, I think that episode might be Night Shift, but that *could* just be because I just finished watching it. *g*
BTW, that one interrogation scene in Night Shift always reminds me of Jane's fic "Good For The Soul." Just saying. :D

Fanfiction stories usually include a description of the meals the guys share. They seem to eat a lot of stir fry, vegetarian lasagne, and of course scrambled eggs with turkey bacon. But in canon, what did they really eat?
We all remember the famous courtship ritual scene where Blair serves Jim eggs and toast. And there's the scene in the park where they eat hotdogs. Did we ever see them eating supper together in the loft? If so, what kind of a meal did they have?
ETA Thanks to everyone who responded. I got hungry just reading the comments. In the story I'm currently working on, the guys get together for supper and I really didn't want to serve them stir fry. Now I have a better selection of things for them to eat. Thank you all.

So, we were searching for stories in the theme of "Blair becomes a detective but when he testifies in court the fraud thing bites him in the butt". Hah, did you even know that's a theme? So, I'd like opinions on whether Blair's declarations at the press conference created an insurmountable barrier to his legitimacy as a witness in court.
I'm going to ask you to exclude scenarios where things get "fixed" by holding another press conference, suing and winning against the publishing co and uni, etc, because that would really negate what he was trying to do -- take the spotlight off Jim and give him back his "normal" life. I've got opinions (of course!) but I'd like to hear yours first. If you have any legal experience or basis to throw into the discussion, even better. Looking forward to your input!

After taking the day off from work and watching the SciFi marathon of The Sentinel, I got to thinking about the other characters in the show. This, of course, made me wonder, who (besides Jim or Blair) is your favorite and why?
Do you love adore Simon and his cigars? Lash because he's just plain freaky (but had the good taste to emulate Blair)? Ms Hobson and her Jim!kryptonite dagger?
I'd like to know.
Personally, for my favorite 'other' I'd have to pick Jack Kelso. Though he isn't seen much, I have to say that I enjoy each of his scenes. I like his wry sense of humor about how he came to terms with the fact that his book ended up collecting dust on people's shelves, and I like that he's a 'friend' of Blair's that isn't a Cascade PD member. I also like the fact that he's a handicapped individual that is strong and successful. (The whole show actually rather diverse in that area, but that is an entirely different topic.)

Hi, I’m doing a long research paper on human behavior that will basically be going into how friendships are formed within the entertainment industry. One part of that will be gathering information from different fandoms including both more ensemble-type shows as well as shows that are based more on the “buddy” relationship. I already have information from the ensemble ones. For the buddy shows, I chose Supernatural, Starsky and Hutch, The Sentinel, and due South (though I'm not quite sure where to post this for due South). I’ve got Supernatural pretty well covered, but I’d like more info than I have about the other three.

What with one thing and another, I've been playing my own personal mental song vids behind my eyelids for the last week, and the Sentinel Thursday prompt and my recent post in my own lj reflect that.
So what songs would you adore seeing as a Sentinel song vid? What are already your favourite vids? If vidding-talented people get ideas from this that's all to the good, but I'm seeing this as a post for people like me who are too tech-phobic or pushed for time to learn the new skills to just have a vent and an imagining.
To kick it off - I have a mad fondness for Fabella's Wary of Strangers vid. And besides any songs listed in my lj or Sentinel Thursday, I want to know why no-one's ever done a vid to Elvis Costello's Every Day I Write the Book.
Have at it.

We have another day to put on the calendar. March 27th will be the next Sentinel marathon if it doesn't get changed. No episode schedule yet but at least it's there. Don't forget February's date is the 19th.

We've been having a discussion on another list about Jim or Blair as parents. Would they step up to the plate if they fathered a child? Would they welcome fatherhood with joy and anticipation? Would they want to become parents, even if it weren't thrust upon them? Like through adoption or surrogacy?
Last month on the same list, there was a lively discussion on whether they would ever bake cookies (like for the holidays). So, of course now I'm wondering how *you* perceive these guys in terms of domesticity. Sure, they cook, they clean, they play house with each other or with dates, they are friendly with kids. But where do you think their mindsets are? Do they enjoy these things, or simply tolerate them.
What say you?

So after seeing Richard Burgi on Knight Rider the other night I started thinking about a wonderful wish of seeing Jim and Blair together again after 10 years. How I wish, wish, wish there would be a Sentinel reunion show. Hummmmmmmm! Sorry daydreaming. So here is my take on how it might visually go. Thanks go out to Jane for the screen caps and one of the lucky attendees of GMOH 2008 (not sure who took the pic) but together they melt my heart. I've become such a manip junkie.

A comparison of how they looked together during the show's run.

Also click below to see a few manips I've been playing with too. Hope you enjoy.
