FICTION: Death and the Veteran
FICTION: Death and the Veteran. By Ruthless. As Christmas approaches, a veteran looks back on a lost past and awaits the inevitable arrival of a skeleton.

We woke early, stayed in bed, bodies locked rocking and fused by the moistness of sweat. . . . Death come dance with me. Let your hand link my hand with Noel's hand.

Dusk, I "met" you on mannazone months ago, but only recently read your fiction, which I very much enjoyed.

When I saw this show up on my friend's list, I didn't know what to expect (a Christmas story from the man who wrote dark stories like Life Prison?), but whatever I may have anticipated, it wasn't this beautiful, moving - even tender - tale. Your descriptions of the storyteller's memory of being with his lover Noel, and the passages from the letters Noel wrote, were amazing. You created such a strong image of these two men and their relationship -both from a physical and emotional standpoint - with so few words. Wonderfully done.

I'm not a guy who cries easily, but I will admit that I was moved to tears both times I read this. Wonderful story. Thank you for sharing it. Hope your holiday is merry.

That's very kind of you, and I'm sure the author will be pleased at your comments when he reads this. :) I'm an editor as well as an author; this is a story that has just been published in my e-zine True Tales.

I'm flattered, by the way, to have one of Ruthless's stories mistaken for my own. We do overlap in certain ways in subject matter, but he's a much better stylist than I am.

"Hope your holiday is merry."

Thank you! I do remember our prevous encounter and am delighted we've crossed paths again. I hope we'll do so again in the future.

Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Ruthless, all the things I said about the story - I meant. It was very moving.

I have not read something that brought tears to my eyes in some time. I love the imagery in this story...real or not it's incredible. It's an inspiration to now that even in the darkest shadow love can prevail. Thank you for sharing that with the world.

This was a truly magical and wonderful story. Someone had sent it to me around the turn of the year, and it sat in my inbox for months and months. A little fall cleaning led me to read it, and I am so glad I did. A testament to love's powers to conquer the darkest hours. Thanks for writing this.
