Beer! [13 Nov 2009|06:18pm]

mediter
Hey guys, this sounds silly, but where can I buy BEER around here - other than the grocery store?

I was surprised to find out that the liquor stores don't sell it.

Preferably in Chapel Hill but anywhere in the area is fine. :)

Shopping locally? [13 Nov 2009|01:17pm]

asimaiyat
Hi!

I'm just getting started on Christmas shopping, and since a lot of my friends are scattered around the country, I thought it would be nice to get them something authentically North Carolinian. Does anyone know of any good stores that sell the wares of local craftspeople and artisans? I'd like to keep the budget relatively limited, but higher-priced stuff is okay too.

We live in Raleigh, near NCSU, but are perfectly comfortable driving.

Thanks!

H1N1 Vaccine Clinic [11 Nov 2009|03:18pm]

nanaslug
 Hey Fellow Triangleites!

You may have already heard, but the National Guard Armory on Stadium Drive in Durham has an H1N1 vaccine clinic until 7pm today, or until they run out.  We just got back and the person said they have "plenty," and there wasn't an insane amount of people waiting when we left.  Here's the flyer from the health department that denotes who's eligible

Just thought I'd pass that on!  :)

Horseback Riding [09 Nov 2009|01:51pm]

mediter
Where can I go horseback riding in the area?

I'm just looking for a place where I can rent a saddled horse & ride it around their farm/land or whatever.

I've googled around, but can only find places that offer lessons in various riding styles. I don't want lessons!

Thanks guys :)

let's try this again [05 Nov 2009|05:43pm]

Okay, sorry for my last post about NC residency - it was a random rush post and I didn't take the time to write out my situation. It's a little complicated, so here goes:

- I am originally from Michigan
- I am currently a Duke grad student, but I don't need residency for school - it has nothing to do with my schooling
- I will be graduating in August of this upcoming year and intend to work as a physician assistant here and obtain my DEA license/medical license to practice in NC. I don't have to legally be a resident in the state I practice, but that would be messy with income tax and such, so I need to be a resident
- I am up to my nose in student loans so I don't plan on owning a house anytime soon, so would my "intent to establish primary permanent residency" be okay with just an apartment?
- I am getting married in April of this upcoming year and will be changing my last name at that time, and was hoping this process would be made somewhat easier by already having a driver's license at the local DMV here instead of having to go back up north
- My car is registered in MI and I carry a Michigan driver's license

So for those of you that have first-hand knowledge with relocating here and establishing yourself here, any experiences you could share regarding the following would be SO appreciated:
- establishing "residency"
- getting your car registered down here/driver's liscence & plates - MI does not have inspection, so that's also new to me
- good car insurance companies to go with down here

Thank you SO much for all your help. I plan on researching everything out, but things are really hectic right now with rotations and was hoping someone out there felt like guiding a lost soul :) Again, sorry for the confusion in the last post. Thank you so much!

stone/river rock? [03 Nov 2009|04:31pm]

ignescent
Is there a place near Southpoint mall or in the Chapel Hill area to buy decent quantities of river-rock or flat stone in the 1 to 2 foot size range? I'm doing some landscaping, but all the rock places I know of are in the Raleigh area.

Thanks

Maker Faire: NC [31 Oct 2009|02:15pm]

ambermae
From the TechShop forums. Please visit the links below to get involved:

Some of the Make:RDU group and others in the community are planning a "Mini" Maker Faire for Spring 2010. We're at the early stages of planning now so there are still a lot of unanswered questions.

What we DO know is that it will happen April-May next year, it will be awesome, and we need LOTS of Makers coming out and showing their talents.

Help us spread the word, OK? Head on over to www.makerfairenc.com, sign up for the Facebook page, the Twitter feed, and attend the Make:RDU meetings. Tell your friends, coworkers, family, etc. especially if they're not really involved online and might miss our online marketing. We need makers, crafters, artists, designers, hackers, etc. from all walks of life!

Durham haunted yard! Worth the drive! [31 Oct 2009|06:35am]

barebonedcrazy
If you are looking for a fun house to trick-or-treat at tonight...definitely head over to 1010 Stadium Drive in Durham (right off of Duke St)! Some of you may know which house I'm talking about but my in-laws always put on a great show and this year they are doing it a little differently...a haunted tent in the drive way! I was over there all last night setting up and it's going to be GREAT! I'll be the little red devil in front, giving candy to the wee ones who aren't quite prepared for such an ordeal :) The haunting will commence around 6pm!

Happy treating!!

Art School? [29 Oct 2009|07:56pm]

mediter
Hi guys :)

I'm a so-called artist, looking for some various artistic courses to enroll in. I'm unemployed with too much free time on my hands! I'm also new to the area (remember me?).

I live in Pittsboro (well, in the woods closer to fearrington) & I'm not really afraid of a commute. Are there buses around here?

I'm looking for graphic design, mixed media, art history, painting, ceramics... you name it! I just need to know what colleges/universities to look into for that sort of thing.

Any help is much appreciated. Tips on attractions (food/etc) to check out in Pittsboro are very welcome. ^_^

Jeweller needed & chiropractor recommended. [24 Oct 2009|02:33am]

fairnymph
1. I really need a good jeweller for a few bits of custom work. I don't care if it's an actual store or a person who just has the right tools. I have several gems that I would like set in white gold - in one case I have the settings and the gems but lack the tools. I also am looking for someone who can make a stainless steel band (it's a thick watch band with a clasp that's 2 separate pieces, but NOT comprised of links) smaller so that it will actually fit on my tiny wrist. I don't know if this is even possible since SS is such a hard metal, but I would need 3/4" inch cut out of each side while maintaining the proper curvature to hug my wrist.

2. I highly, highly recommend my chiropractor, whom I've been seeing for two months now. She is the 16th chiropractor I've worked with, and along with 2 others, the only other one I have found remotely helpful. I have severe chronic back pain from a severe case of scoliosis; very few people can adjust me. She can. She's also very creative and knowledgeable in a wide variety of areas related to health as well as an awesome person. I cannot rave about her enough! Her name is Dr. Mindy Bradshaw, she's in Chapel Hill, and her website is here. Great hours and I get UNLIMITED adjustments for $55 a month, without insurance!
