zashine: Intro & Request

Intro: Name/LJ user name: Zashine Location: Calgary, AB. Canada - Originally from Ontario. Age: 23 Where have you traveled? Jamaica, England, France, Italy, most of the Provinces in Canada, and a few States. What's your next destination? California What's your favorite form of transportation? Car Request: I'm looking for a ride into the US from Calgary, or anywhere near here; either point of origin and destination, I'm flexible on both counts. I'm looking to leave during the last week of August; this is also relatively flexible, but I'd like to leave before September. I'd be willing to find a way to meet someone crossing the border in the city or near it, and I'm fully capable of chipping in for gas. I don't need a ride all the way to California, though that would be ideal. If someone is able to give me a lift across the border and to a city with a Greyhound bus stop, that will be all I need. I'm planning a trip across the US to visit family and friends and just have fun backpacking. The reason I'd like a ride instead of taking the bus across, is because I've been hearing rumours of not allowing single individuals across without a return ticket. It isn't practical for me to purchase a return ticket because I don't have a set return date and I plan to get a ride back into the country from friends anyway. If I cancel it, I won't be able to get all my money back, and I'm trying to stick to a budget, so losing money over that isn't really favourable. So anyone going my way??! I would really really appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Cross-posted to uurideshare Fri, Aug. 1st, 2008, 10:43 am

branwyn32: Cross-USA Driving... x-posted everywhere
Hi, new here. :) Just searched for some travel communities and here I am. Hope that's ok! Here's my question:
Anyone ever drive cross country alone in a crappy 17 year old Toyota Camry with 200K+ miles on it? (or you know, something similiar?) How'd that work out for you? Did you get broken down/lost/stranded/mugged/kidnapped by hillfolk/sexually assaulted with banjos?
I talked to a guy the other day driving a 1978 VW bus from Alabama to ALASKA with nothing but a few belongings, a tent, sleeping bag, wing and a prayer. And he seemed to have complete faith in this endeavor. I'm in Atlanta and thinking about moving to Seattle. I'm young, female, and not got much in the way of money, so I'm trying to do this on the cheap/safe. Any thoughts, advice, experiences would be great to hear. As far as travelshares, I'd have space for someone along the way. Anybody got a spare couch from Atlanta to Seattle? I've got places so far in Colorado Springs and Boise. Cheers! bandungjournal: The Hills and Mountains Around Bandung
The hills and mountains that surround Bandung are sometimes somewhat humorously and affectionately referred to as the "guardian angels of Bandung". It is as if they stand guard and protect the city but they might also be thought of as brooding giants. Heading southwest from the city, though, one is more likely to think of the hills as guardian angels. The scenery is attractive and rolling hills lead up to higher mountains, portraying a bucolic charm and peacefulness. Heading towards Mount Patuha, some 35 to 40 kilometers from central Bandung, the urban sprawl of the city gradually gives way to the countryside and the road narrows and starts to climb into the surrounding hills. All over these hills are strawberries being grown for the local markets but also for the passersby to pick for themselves if they so choose to. Typically being grown in raised cylinders of soil, these strawberries are small but sweet and inexpensive according to Simon Marcus Gower. Fruitful stop-offs can be made along the way to Mount Patuha and the quite remarkable crater lake that is to be found there known as Kawah Putih. The name Kawah Putih translates as White Crater and it soon becomes clear why this scenic area is so named. The roadway up to the crater is narrow and quite rough and feels precarious as large boulders seem to threaten a collapse and landslide down onto the roadway. But once this rather worrisome road has been negotiated, one emerges into a clearing where numerous stalls have been set up to serve visitors. Here refreshments may be bought and the ubiquitous, for this area, strawberries are for sale too. Also on sale are woolen gloves and scarves, which indicate the temperatures in these parts are relatively cooler. The scarves might also come in handy to protect the nose and mouth — for what lies ahead is quite smelly. Climbing up to the crater’s edge and then on down into the crater, the practically nauseating smell of sulfur wafts up with the breeze. The sense of smell is, then, practically under attack but the sense of sight is soon rewarded with stunning and quite mesmerizing colors. A pathway leads down to the crater’s floor and from this pathway one can look down and across the quite brilliant colors of this natural phenomenon. The lake that sits in the center of the crater is a quite vibrant white/turquoise color. At the edges of the lake’s waters, the sulfur deposits have stained the land yellow. The walls of the crater, that in parts soar perpendicularly to a great height, are made up of rock and stones that look as though they have been bleached white. Running along the lip of the crater are trees that add greenery to the view and all of this, combined with a blue sky, creates a colorful and picturesque scene. There are some trees and shrubs that have grown up — or rather, have attempted to grow up — in the crater itself. But many of these plants are blackened and choked to death by the quite suffocating vapors that constantly surface from the depths of the crater. The waters of the lake bubble and boil up showing the brooding nature of this crater. In isolated corners, blackened lava-like substances froth and foam up and it is perhaps one of the wonders of this site that the visitor can get so close to these ominous sights of the earth’s volatility. As noted vegetation in the crater is largely killed off by the sulfur vapors, human visitors should be careful too. If the wind blows in the wrong direction, quite overpowering wafts of the vapors can be sent swirling and thus the protection of a recently bought scarf or handkerchief may be called upon. Near to the pathway that leads down to the crater floor is a cave-like opening into the wall of the crater. It is here that shafts were apparently mined to collect sulfur — but the danger that seems to lurk thereabouts tends to ward off too much exploration in that direction. Kawah Putih is, then, quite stunning to the eye but is a little disturbing to the nose. For good views and a breath of fresh air, a short journey on and around the slopes of Mount Patuha can be taken to Lake Patengan. Through an area known as Walini, rolling and tumbling small hills are passed. These hills are made very attractive to the eye by the tea plantations that cover them, creating the impression of a green carpet only occasionally broken up by huge rocks and boulders strewn about or busy tea pickers. On then the traveler goes through these hilly plantations that produce the leaf for our daily beverage, and down a short road between all this greenery to the lake of Patengan. It can be a little confusing, though, to know what to call this lake; it is sometimes referred to as Situ Patengan but at other times is called Patenggang. There is no confusion, however, over what is to be seen and experienced here. A wide and open lake spreads before the visitor, with pine trees dotting the lakeshore making for a perfect picnic place. Colorful boats sit upon the shore ready to take visitors on pleasure cruises on and around the lake. Near the main public entrance to the lake, stalls are huddled where once again refreshments and strawberries can be purchased as well as locally produced tea. Small fees must be paid to enter these locations: Rp 5,000 for a car and Rp 7,500 per person at Kawah Putih, and Rp 11,500 for a car and Rp 4,000 per person at Lake Patengan. Apparently, the shape of the lake is that of a heart. There are mythical stories told of how the lake was formed after a lady asked her gentleman friend to prove his love for her by making the lake that we see today. The story is romantic but fanciful and it is far more likely that the lake was formed eons ago by volcanic activity. No matter how the lake came into existence, what we see today is a scene of considerable beauty that offers an attractive and calming location to relax and enjoy clear mountain air and cool breezes off the lake’s waters. Both Kawah Putih and Lake Patengan exemplify pleasing and attractive hill and mountain locations where one can enjoy relaxing times among Bandung’s "guardian angels". smilingbuddha: Malaysia and Thailand

Hello... I am making a trip out to Malaysia and Thailand... which I believe in all probability would be my last vacation alone as a bachelor before I get married and have to have to take my wife to shopping destinations or wherever else her beautiful heart may desire... then there's going to babies and we can only go to child-friendly places or whatever. Anyway, coming back to the point, I have scored free round-trip tickets to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia...and I plan to travel alone through Malaysia and Thailand. Since I only have about a week or so, I am planning to hit Kuala Lumpur (obviously), Genting, Penang & Langkawi, Phuket and Koh-Samui...havent decided on the order yet...but it would have to begin and end in KL. The idea is to make this a cost-effective yet interesting in some way, so I have decided to take overnight trains as much as possible.... good/bad idea? Also, since I won't be using hotels much since the overnight trains have nice bunks, does anyone know if shower facilities are available in the railway stations/other places in above towns? I know Singapore, for example, has them at the airport... for about Sing$10 (US$6) you get the use the swimming pool and shower... they provide you a clean towel, toiletries and even a can of soda! If anyone has any general tips, in addition to the questions embedded in the needlessly verbose post you just kindly plowed through, please share. I promise to send you good vibes. peace and harmony.. Thu, Oct. 25th, 2007, 03:17 pm
katescorner: Atlantic CIty or Bust

I'm going to Atlantic City. Any thoughts on cheap/nice places to stay? The best casinos (like out of James Bond)? Can me and my guy have a picnic on the beach anywhere? DO we need beach tags? Is the boardwalk still open? The best food places? I've heard rave reviews about Max's pizza.... The best off-the-beaten path things to see or do? And what are the outlets like? Oh, and the best date type thing to do on Saturday night? Thanks for your help and info! I'm very excited about the trip! Mon, Aug. 6th, 2007, 03:38 pm

greensinger: travels?

So it's been a long time since I've posted here, and in fact I'd forgotten I was a member and didn't ask for a ride when I was hitching from New York to Washington (state). But here I am, and I'm looking for two bits of help: 1) Is there anyone going from Austin, TX to the west coast (anywhere San Francisco and north) who would be willing to pick up and drop off my bicycle? I had to leave it there when I hitched to my sister's wedding, and going back for it wasn't and isn't convenient. It's currently being kept by some friends of mine at the Rhizome Collective. 2) Is there anyone driving from Vancouver, BC to San Francisco sometime between the 10th and the 14th of August? Those dates are flexible and represent my ideal situation. Seattle or even Portland to SF would also be great. I am: Name/LJ user name: Marvin/greensinger Location: Olympia, Washington Age: 25 Where have you traveled? hitched: multiple East Coast trips, NY->CO->NY->ME, TX->CA->MO->TN->NY, NY->WA. Walked: GA->ME. Biked: NY->TN->NOLA->Austin, TX. What's your next destination? I'm going back to AZ, Vegas and LA at the end of august. What's your favorite form of transportation? Plane, though its annoying on the way home cause I just want to be home already. My first real plane trip was to California when I was 17 years old. My trip was cut short due to my sister passing away. Maybe 6 months or so after that, I went back to make up for the trip and have been doing that every 6 mons-1 year since then. I love traveling and going to new places. I haven't been to anything NEW NEW in a while but the places I have been I fell in love with and feel the need to go every so often to save some of my sanity. It feels like a whole new world for me. I'll shut up now!

katescorner: New York on the cheap?

Hi, My boyfriend and I are taking our first trip together. To NEw York City. We're making a long weekend of it on July 20th-22nd. Anyway, we're on a very limited budget. Does anyone have any suggestions for inexpensive places to stay and eat? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for sites to check out and things to do? (We're looking for both non-touristy attractions that only locals know about and some tourist sites.) And, does anyone have any suggestions about the best and cheapest way to score broadway tickets? I really want to surprise him with a show. Our goal is to have a really good time which should be pretty easy in New York... Thanks for your info and suggestions.
