ICON TUTORIAL

Icon Tutorial No.1: Scarlet Johansson

I'm using this photo of Scalett Johansson, which can be found at this site. Also, this tutorial is written for photoshop 7.)

Getting Started
01. I first selected the crop tool and resize my picture to 100x100.

02. I then duplicate the background layer and sharpen it Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen.

03. Next, I desaturated the picture Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Set the blend mode to Screen at 100% Opacity.

04. I duplicate the desaturated layer Layer > Duplicate Layer and set the blend mode to Soft Light at 100% Opacity.

05.I then created a new layer by pressing the bottonon the layers pallete, and set the blend mode to Multiply. I filled it with a light Pink color #D5ABA3 at 100% Opacity.

06. Now it's time to add text. I created a new layer and select the eye dropper tool on the side panel and choose a dark pink color from my picture for the text. I used Arial Black at size 5pt with a spacing of 200 for 'I Woke up' a spacing of 25 for "And Yeah I'm' and a spacing of 100 for 'Still Alive'. That's about all I did for the text.

07. I then flatten the image Layer > Flatten Image. I duplicate the layer and stoke it Edit > Stroke with black #000000 using a 1px width with a center location.

08. I wanted to do something with the coloring, so I flatten the image Layer > Flatten Image and went to Image > Adjustments > Variations. This part is optional. You are free to experiment with the colors as you like. I went with More Yellow > More Cyan > More Blue and More Red

FINISHED!
If you're having any problem understanding this feel free to let me know and I will gladly help you.

I have a question. I'm guessing this tutorial is for photoshop, but do you know how to desaturate in PSP8 by any chance? Thank you.

I know how to desaturate in PSP8. Go to Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Hue/Saturation/Lightness. Make sure the drop down box says "Master". Then set Hue to 0, Lightness to 0 and Saturation to -100. =)

Great Tutorial, thanks for sharing, I hope it is alright to ask you?

how do you achieve that 'greyish' effect? Your reply to this will be appreciated, if not it's alright.

I Desaturate my base and set the layer to Screen. I then duplicate the layer and set it to Soft Light. I create a new and add a gradient map with a pink/reddish color from my image. Sometimes I lower the opacity, but that's really up to you.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask me. I will write another tutorial soon. I hope this info helped.

I really like this tutorial, I am going to make it into an action....

But one thing - your text, I can see you have a background behind the text but you don't say how you made that and it is something I would like to know.

Thank you!

[info]winterrosej11

September 21 2004, 22:07:09 UTC 7 years ago

That background was already part of the picture. But sometimes when I need to add a box for text I use the retangular marquee tool.

I'm trying this tutorial and I was wondering, how do you transcript the last step in PSP8? I've wanted to ask this forever because I don't know if what I do is the right thing. I go to Adjust > Color Balance > Color Balance... Is that right?

Anyways, here's what I did thanks to your tutorial, thanks so much.

Thanks ^_^

Color Balance works too, but it's not as effective as Variations. However, I don't rally know how to use the Variations effect in PSP8. BTW, those icons are awesome :)
