Call For Fearless Athletes
For the last 5 years, Jeff Sheng has been photographing athletes on high school, college and university varsity sports teams who also openly identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans for a project called Fearless.
Thanks to a grant by the St. Paul's Hospital Foundation in Vancouver and efforts by the GayWhistler's PRIDE House in partnership with Qmunity in Vancouver, Fearless is coming to Canada. Jeff Sheng will be in Vancouver and Whistler photographing for the project November 19 to 22. They are currently looking for volunteers to participate in the project, specifically out LGBT athletes who play sports on high school, college or university varsity teams, or who are training full-time as high performance athletes.
If you are (or know of) an LGBT athlete who is not out, they are also collecting anonymous stories/testimonials as to why athletes are not able to be out in their sport.
The Canadian version of Fearless will be exhibited at the first ever Pride House during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Whistler and Vancouver. For more information on the project and how you get involved please contact Ken Coolen at 778-834-3536. |

What about my gender marker? I'm on T and haven't had any surgeries yet, so I'm wondering in Manitoba, if I can do it or if I have to wait until I get top and get the hysto done? Thanks for reading this and have a good day! |

hey folks,
I'm in the middle of filling out a vital statistics legal name change in BC. I'm unsure what to do about a couple things.
First, this is a name change form, so I see it as separate from changing the F to an M. However, there is a little box where one is supposed to indicate their gender. For anyone who has filled one of this BC forms out, what are your thoughts about that little box? Should I put M, or do I need to put F (as my other documents currently say F)? Or should I leave it blank? Should I make sure I have a letter from my surgeon and Dr. and include those in the envelop I'm sending? If I don't put M, should I still include letters from my surgeon and Dr.?
Secondly, you have to answer for what reason you are changing your name (eg. professional, marriage, personal). If you choose 'personal' (which seems to fit my case), there is a line to describe and in parentheses it even says 'describe'. Do i really have to 'describe' or can I leave it blank? would it be sufficient to say "transitioning'? or something like that?
Maybe I should just call Vital Statistics, but I don't really want to call and say "hi, i want to change my name. i'm trans, do i have to write that on the form?"
anyway, whoever can help- that'd be great. thanks, ben |

| Endo Appointment |
[Aug. 30th, 2009|08:19 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | anxious | ] | Okay, I got a question. I have an endo appointment with Dr. Roe in Winnipeg September 25 and I am getting...well, I guess I didn't really do my homework like a good boy I am, haha. So I have a few questions. I went the route of therapist-letter-endo appointment. Can anyone tell me what I can expect in the appointment? I know it's bloodwork, but is there anything else really? Also, how long will I be waiting to get a prescription? I've read around that there are two appointments, one for bloodwork and the other for a prescription, but because I have to travel over two hours to get to Winnipeg, I can't really jump back and forth. So, I guess the question is how long is the in between period? A few days to a week? Thanks for reading this and understanding it. |

| Winnipeg lgbt-friendly therapist |
[Aug. 4th, 2009|04:21 pm] |
Hey all,
I'm not very active on LJ anymore, and I'm not sure I was ever part of transgender. But I'm so glad to see that there's so much discussion around Lu's and their outrageous 'policy'. It will not stand, I swear... we will make it break somehow!
Anyway, the reason for my post. I'm trying to help out a friend in Winnipeg who would like to get started on some issues related to sex and gender, and he needs to find a psychologist/ therapist in Winnipeg. Someone who is well-versed in lgbt concerns and is trans-friendly is a must.
...I know that the Rainbow Resource Centre exists, but I imagine that their counselling is on a short-term basis since it's offered free of charge.
Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations, places *not* to go etc. -- all help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

| An encouraging Media not-fail |
[Jul. 18th, 2009|07:13 am] |
Usually when any trans-related article appears in the media the comments are absolutely horrible. The article about Lu's pharmacy rejecting a transwoman amazingly bucks that trend. The comments are overwhelmingly supportive and when someone supports Lu's transphobia, they are immediately ripped to shreds by the next comments. This is encouraging.

This morning we held our protest. Lu's Pharmacy decided to show their true colours and closed rather than allow us inside. We held our protest anyway, and got on camera doing so. My prescription for Lu's: Take two doses of tolerance and call me in the morning.

Here's the protest details: What: Protest the Exclusion of Transsexual and Intersexed women (as well as any other woman who doesn't have whatevre they define as "female physiology" and "life experience") from Lu's Pharmacy! Where: Meet outside of Carnegie Hall (Hastings and Main) When: Saturday, July 11th, 2009. Show up at 10am. We move over to Lu's at 10:30. Don't be late! The media will be present, and this will be video-recorded. If you do not want to be filmed, bring an extra T-shirt, or a long-sleeved shirt - just make sure the neck isn't too wide. We will show you how to turn it into a ninja mask (don't worry, the shirt will be fine afterwards). (see the host group for forthcoming details) |

| Disgusting! |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|12:16 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | disgusted | ] | From Canada.com...
...with this little blurb in there...
Starting Tuesday, any woman who was born a woman can visit the pharmacy to have prescriptions filled. Lu's aims to serve women who live and work in the neighbourhood, students and those who choose to patronize businesses with a social mission. (Bold mine)
I guess this place is being staffed by the same transphobic uber-feministas that run Vancouver Rape Relief. Where's Kim Nixon now? I'd like to think this one wouldn't fly in the Supreme Court.
Maybe a whole buncha trans folk, MtF or FtM should go to this place to have their scrips filled, and see what happens.

| TransPULSE survey for Ontario residents. |
[Jun. 25th, 2009|09:14 pm] |
Listen up! There's something really, really awesome going on right now that you should be getting excited about!
TransPULSE project is collecting information across Ontario about determinants of health and barriers to health care access for Trans people. The data we collect will be used to lobby for trans rights, to identify specific ways in which transphobia is affecting people's health and quality of life, and to empower trans people to take control of their own health. This project is being done BY trans people FOR trans people. Right now we are distributing a survey across Ontario. Every person who finishes the survey will receive three codes, which they can pass on to three other transpeople. Those people can then use the codes to access the survey at http://www.transpulse.ca. This is the first time any of this research has been done and it may be the biggest thing ever to happen for trans people in Ontario. We know that discrimination is hurting us; this is our chance to prove it. Visit the website. Talk to your friends or anyone you know who might have a code. Get a code. Do the survey. Pass your codes on so that others can do the same.
This is gonna rock! |

| Medical Supplies |
[Jun. 16th, 2009|01:23 pm] |
Hey Folks,
I've been on T for almost 2.5 months. I'm looking for a place to buy needles and syringes. I'm currently getting them through the pharmacy I have my prescription with. I'd like to find them cheaper and I'd like to buy a large quantity. I'm wondering if there is a decent Canadian distributor I can directly buy from? I Googled Canadian medical supplies and found a few places, but if there is somebody who could vouch for one that'd be great! |
