Random updates [07 Oct 2008|07:37am]

aisling
The sites are all moved now, and the DNSs resolved so you're seeing each site at the new hosting.  I'll tweak two or three of them daily.  I mean, October is always my busiest month of the year and there are only so many hours in the day!

Now that Aisling.net has moved, I went to the Support site for Websitesource.  I needed to tell them that I've removed all files from their server and I want the account closed.  Before submitting a support ticket, I clicked to see their General Information files.  Here's what I reached when I clicked on their link for general account information:

Fatal error
: ERROR: You are not allowed to view this article or the article does not exist. in /usr/local/www/apache22/data/supportsuite/modules/knowledgebase/client_knowledgebase.php on line 160

Too funny!  I'm still betting that they're getting ready to close their doors.  Nothing else makes sense to me, unless the owner (who hosts her own sites on someone else's server) is outsourcing to the cheapest and stupidest support group on the planet.

Ah, well...

In other news, I want to talk about why we moved with no safety net and not enough money to do this the sensible way.  At the time, I was afraid that I'd sound totally nuts.  (This part of this post could be subtitled, "life, as a psychic.")

About a year ago, my gut feeling was that the economy was about to hit rough seas. Don't read this if you think nothing's seriously wrong with the U.S. economy... )</div>

I think it's blood pressure related. I don't know why.

AM = All Marketing Radio [07 Oct 2008|01:58am]

radven
[ mood | happy ]

We took highway 50 up and over the Sierras tonight heading into Carson City. Much of the way we were out of range of listenable FM, and I've grown bored with the CD's currently in Jeep's changer.

Which left nothing but late night AM radio to listen to.

Egads, it was awful.

On two different channels was the same crackpot being interviewed about telepathy and other psychic phenomena. Another several channels were nothing but an endless patterns of 1 minute of news, 1 minute of traffic, 1 minute of sports, seven minutes of commercials, and then the same damn 1 minute summary of the headlines again with no depth or analysis whatsoever.

Some other stations broke the pattern by focusing 45% on sports, 5% on news, and 50% on advertising.

A few distant crackly channels were doing right-wing talk radio ranting, and one was doing something similar but from the left.

The pattern is maddening.... Clueless caller rants for a few minutes, host blathers a few minutes, and then between every caller at least five minutes of commercials - at least half misleadingly disguised as news stories.

AM radio is a shallow and pointless wasteland of marketing and mistruth. Who listens to this crap?!?? Why???

I really need to get our iPhod input to the stereo fixed soon!!!

Yet more about the economy [06 Oct 2008|09:46pm]

Got out some of my old Whole Earth and Co-Evolution Quarterly magazines from the early Eighties, mainly to look at the Paul Hawken articles. He could be talking about today. Cut for length )

Not So Handy [06 Oct 2008|10:57pm]

Well, that was more irritating than it should have been. I decided to upgrade the hard drive on my PS3 tonight (why be stuck with 60gb when you can get 320gb for under $100) and online guides made it sound easy.

Everything worked fine, except for the bit where the screws holding the drive onto the cage are really tight and really soft and I had to resort to the pliers on my leatherman to get them off. Once I did that I was back on track.

So, more of a pain than I initially expected, but it looks like it will have worked in the end. Plus, it's a whole lot better than Microsoft's "If you want more space you'll have to buy our exorbitantly priced add-on drive, unless you want something bigger than 120GB" deal. (I started to write 120GB, then thought it couldn't be that small, then checked online and realized it is.)

One other gaming note- I was at the Roseville Target and they have the collector's edition of GTA IV for the 360 for about $63 on a clearance end cap.

In other exciting news, I went in for my bi-annual physical today and got a flu shot. I'm supposed to go back for a cholesterol test sometime soon, but that's what they said last time and I didn't really get around to making an appointment.

[info]monstersocks and I went out to the Liz Phair show Saturday night. Very good, I especially liked the one new song she did. Not sure when she'll actually have anything new available. We tried out this new thing they're doing where you can reserve a table on the upper level so that old folks like us don't have to stand around. It worked pretty well (after I notified their webmaster that the online form wasn't working) although the staff seemed a bit baffled by the process and it didn't work quite the same way it was initially described.

We also saw two First Ave employees who did fairly good impressions of [info]omaha and [info]rock_moniker. Fauxmaha and Fauxgan were getting trained and kept wandering by our seats.

Almost 'ta-dah' [06 Oct 2008|04:36pm]

aisling
I moved all of the Aisling.net files.  All 5000+ of them... I think.  (When you get into those kinds of numbers, it's easy to overlook a folder or three.)

All of the other websites are resolving now. (In other words, except for Aisling.net, you're seeing the sites at the new hosting service.)  Aisling.net will be visible at the new server in 12 - 48 hours, depending upon how quickly the various connections get updated in the aether.

Some of my ~35 sites moved a little more gracefully than others.  All of them still need work, but that's going to be "as time permits."

Generally, the articles are there, but they may or may not look a little primitive, and some links may not work yet.

I'm exhausted but feeling accomplished.  I baked oatmeal raisin cookies today, too -- yes, I am Superwoman *chuckle* -- and I'm going to go eat a bunch of them to reward myself for a very good day!

Reminder: My emails won't be working for at least another day, and probably two days.

Maybe not Vegas -- Obama's Mobile Rural HQ?!!? [06 Oct 2008|01:23pm]

radven
[ mood | optimistic ]

We've spent the morning talking with various folks on the Obama Nevada campaign, and now it looks like we are headed to Carson City this afternoon instead of towards Vegas.

The new plan is to take advantage of our technomadic mobility and autonomy to head out into rural Nevada, going from town to town using our trailer as a mobile campaign headquarters.

This should be interesting, and it certainly is tapping into our unique traits as technomads.

We are heading to Carson City now to meet with the team and get trained.

We'll know more soon....

Change of Plans: Going to Carson City [06 Oct 2008|01:09pm]

serolynne
So, after some discussions with campaign organizers this morning - we're headed to Carson City, NV to the rural Nevada Region 2 office for the Campaign for Change. We'll be trained up this week, and then be sent out to rural towns in northern Nevada acting as a mobile campaign headquarters as part of the Get Out The Vote effort.

Sounds perfect for technomads with diverse skill sets.

Conversations while working from home... [06 Oct 2008|12:48pm]

lossrockhart
"Hi, my name's Rachel," says the brunette through the screen door. "I'm with Sonoma Cattle Exchange, we do door-to-door delivery, in fact, we've got some steaks in the car...."
Behind me, on the couch, Maddie's been sleeping. Her ears perk up.
"No thanks," I say, shaking my head. "Vegetarian." Maddie wags her tail.
"We got seafood, too," says Rachel, with a wink and a two-fingered Lynndie point towards her truck.
Maddie growlfs, stands with her front paws on the arm of the couch.
"No, no thanks," I say, closing the door as Rachel descends the stairs.
I turn, and Maddie wrinkles her nose and glares at me, baring teeth. "Oh, foo," she growls.

Another day, another debate: Debates & Drunkeness Downtown III [06 Oct 2008|02:43pm]

grenacia
Tomorrow (Tuesday the 7th) is another presidential debate. We'll be watching it in the basement of the 508 Bar, where we watched the first presidential debate. All are welcome, and any overflow should be manageable, but still it'd be great if you could RSVP to [info]phoenixredux's invitation post so we'll have some idea of numbers.

Where: The 508 Bar, 508 1st Ave (right by the Warehouse District Light Rail station)
When: Tuesday 10/7, doors at 7, debate at 8PM

The final debate will be next Wednesday, October 15, and there'll probably be a gathering for that too, but location is still TBA.

Note on other viewings: Tuesday's debate will be NOT be shown at the Riverview Theatre, but next Wednesday's debate will be, for free. Show up early though, at the last one they filled up and had to turn people away.

Please excuse various x-postings.

$800B Bailout? [06 Oct 2008|11:38am]

So, not only was that $700B bailout increased through pork-barrel to $800B, it appears that it was all for naught.

Can we get any of that money back?

Uh huh. [06 Oct 2008|12:15pm]

So, Ice Cube has a new video out featuring the family of Jamiel Shaw Jr, a high-school all-star who was gunned down outside of his home.

The song "Why Me?" speaks out against senseless violence and gun crime devastating communities. Cube says Jamiel Shaw Jr.'s family is a powerful illustration of the pain that lingers after a murder.

"It just was a tragic, tragic story of why," Cube says. "Young people are dying for no reason all over the world that don't know why. It's ugly, everywhere.

I dunno, man. Ice Cube has always been against senseless violence, hasn't he? This is the guy who proclaims that it's a "good day" when he "didn't even have to use [his] AK[-47]".

</sarcasm>
