Veterinary Hospitals
Hi,

I'm looking for an animal hospital with reasonable prices that treats small mammals downtown.

I want to take my rat to get checked out, but I think the subway would give him a heart attack so the closer to the core of downtown the better.

Thanks,
Kat

Although not quite downtown, it's still on a streetcar route.

Dr.Munn @ Greenwood Park Animal Hospital specializes in small mammals and she's very good (or so I've been told).

They are at 1041 Gerrard East (@Jones), 416-778-6666

I just called and while it does seem like a nice place, she charges $59.10 for a check-up which is more than we pay for our cats. >_>

I was under the impression that smaller pets like rats are actually more expensive than cats because you usually need to take them to more of a specialized clinic.

They're actually not in the states. :/ I've only experienced this kind of thing in Toronto. Figures :D

Hands down the best small animal vet in the city is Dr. Mavromatis at the Links Road Animal Clinic... but the price is at least $55 or more for a basic checkup, and he's uptown (Sheppard and Yonge area).

On the flip side, two days ago he spent a half-hour on the phone with me, no charge.

You might also try the Downtown Animal Hospital at Church and Bloor - I think they do small animals, though I'm not sure. They were great when I took my cat there, though again, maybe a little pricey.

The sad truth is that any vet who treats 'exotics' (which is apparently what a rat is) tends to charge a little more.

Crazy...I adore that clinic but I'd never see that particular doc again if you paid me. He was so mean to me the one time he saw my pet lovebird, I vowed I'd never see him again. Dr. Nur is at the same clinic and she is just wonderful.

Huh - the one time I had to see Dr. Nur ('cause Dr. Mavromatis was unavailable) about my rat, I was quite displeased with the interaction. Not her attitude, but I felt she didn't really know her stuff.

Evan's always been great to me. Maybe see Dr. Nur for birds and Evan for rats? Or maybe it's just a personality thing?

Anyway, at least we agree that the clinic's good...

Does Dr Nur see birds? I ask because Links seems to be the only damn clinic in Toronto that has avian vets, besides the High Park clinic, and... really don't want to take my birds to High Park ever again.

Would like to find an avian vet who doesn't try to scam for $$$'s of tests on obviously terminal birds, and make us feel like shits for refusing, you feel me?

The Cabbagetown Pet Clinic (on Gerrard just west of Parliament) was very good to my ferrets. I'm not sure if Dr. McClure sees rats, but might be worth a try!
