toronto hydro
this is a question ideally suited for a toronto hydro employee, but since they're not open until monday morning... :) suppose you started renting an apartment where hydro was not included and a few months later it was time to make a payment-- but the hydro account is in the landlord's name. can you just call in to toronto hydro and provide them with a credit card number or an account to withdraw payment from? essentially, is there a way to make a payment on an account that doesn't have your name on it? and/or how easy is it to switch an account from the landlord's name to your name, when there's a balance? does toronto hydro care or do they just want money, in whatever form possible? thank you in advance!

This works in Waterloo, so I assume at the very least it works in Toronto: if you have the account number on the bill, anyone can make a payment to it.

if you have the account number you can add it to your list of billers to pay it with online banking (all banks have this).

BUT....
I wouldn't just take the word of your landlord as to how much the bill is though without seeing it.

Toronto Hydro isn't going to give you any information on an account that isn't yours.

If you want it in your name, your landlord has to call first and cancel the account and than you have to call and re-actiavte it.

you'll need the account number to do that, and as long as you have the account number you can make payments.

or that's how it worked with ottawa hydro. my bill didn't show up when it was scheduled to, so i called with my account number and asked how much i owed. then i used my online bank account to pay for it.

My hydo account number is xxx xxx xxx xxx xxxx x

I would call Hydro and explain the situation - they'll have the most accurate answers. I'm sure there's a way for you to give them money.

Under NO circumstance should you give Hydro your CC or bank info to take payments out of. Way too easy, since the account is in your LL's name, for them to accidentally take his whole bill out of your account.

Have your LL show you the bill and give you a copy and write him a check, or switch the account to your name.

Call me cynical, but I've had too many utilities screw up bills...

As a landlord, there are certain advantages to having the utility bills stay in my name - most importantly, I can make sure they get paid. As well, I've learned the hard way not to include hydro in the rent. So, as a compromise, I pay the bills each month and provide my 2 tenants with a copy, and they reimburse me. This way, everyone can track usage and stay on top of payments. Of course, this works best with separate meters and a small building.

if the hydro is in the landlord's name, i think that there might be a legal problem with that.

you'd better ask to see the bill before you pay it. I don't like the sounds of that.
