moving.
Pretty soon I plan on venturing to Toronto for school but I need some first hand knowledge so,

Apartment prices: I don't need much, just a simple one bedroom basement suit or bachelor apartment would be fine, what would I be looking at for prices and good websites like craigslist to find them?
Hostels: I only know a few people down there and most i've met online so I'm guessing i'm going to have to stay in one until I find a place, so does anyone know any cheap, clean and safe hostels around toronto?
Waitressing:Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much waitress in Toronto generally make in tips per night?

tia :)

I found my current apartment via Craigslist, and did my search using that as well as using the York and University of Toronto housing listings. To really answer your question, some more information is needed, for example:

Which school are you going to? How important is proximity to the school? To everything else? What kind of neighborhood do you want to live in?

I'm going to aveda, but i'll be using the ttc to get there so distance isn't much of a problem, and I don't really care if i live in a "bad part" of toronto I just don't want to live somewhere where i'm afraid i'm going to get mugged all the time i'm pretty much open to anything

For reference, that means she's attending school at 125 King East.

some of the sketchy buildings in that area have bedbugs. be careful. 15 scadding, for example, is horribly infested - i know because i lived there :(

It really does depend on which neighbourhood you are looking at. The range varies. You may want to check craigslist or viewit.ca to see prices in various areas.

As for the jobs, again...it totally depends where you are working. I've worked at places where I pulled in $50 and I've worked at places where I could potentially pull in hundreds depending on the time of year/night of the week/events going on in the city/customers.

A one bedroom apartment in downtown Toronto can be as low as $700, depending on how long and carefully you look. I live on Spadina and pay $1000 (non-inclusive) for a two bedroom, but when I was looking I saw the same quality of apartments ranging from $700-$1700.

Some places are only advertised with a sign in the window. I used to walk through neighbourhoods where I wanted to live looking for them. Also, check out www.myhood.ca.

For ease of sorting through apartments and placing them geographically, I heartily endorse http://housingmaps.com

It's a google mashup that lets you select by size/price and other criteria and maps all the available ones so you can sort geographically as well. insanely useful.

Craigslist usually goes by intersection, and yup.

i live in a tiny bachelor, church and wellesley, and im looking at 750 not including internet

honestly though its worth it to me because the ceilings are high and the windows are enormous

when i was looking for places in the summer, the bloor/christie area had a lot of decently priced one bedroom basements...
