It's been a while since Fea or I did anything with this. If anyone wants to be moderator and take it over, let me know.
I tried downloading IRC to pay a yearly visit to Barliman's, but my brain turned to mush and I gave up on the whole ordeal. >.< I think I used to dl everything from the torn website, but since the new changes were made, I can't dl the version I used to have.
Suggestions?
I don't even know if I can remember how to re-enter all the server information. Such a nub.

I really miss the excitement of the films coming out around Christmas. I hope The Hobbit makes a December premier! It just wouldn't be the same for me otherwise...

Movie Chat kicks off the summer schedule with a very special double-feature: 'Alien' and Aliens!' The stirring tale of the crew of the Nostromo, and the further adventures of Ripley have entertained fans for over twenty years. Join us in what is sure to be a lively debate on the styles of Ridley Scott and James Cameron, the virtues and flaws of both films, and a lot of hooting over our favorite lines: "Game over, man!" Sunday at 2:30 pm EST when we'll pop our copies of the 'Alien' (theatrical version) into our DVD players. Then, at 5:30 pm EST, we'll continue with 'Aliens' (special edition). Also, please check out our tentative Summer Schedule, as voted on by the fine folks in Barliman's chat room. Upcoming featured films include: a double-feature of 'Galaxy Quest,' 'Ghostbusters,' and 'Princess Bride.'

for all of you bash attendees who are staying at the Hyatt and haven't made hotel reservations yet, you'll probably want to make them soon. I just made ours and they were out of discounted rooms for August 2nd. The woman on the phone said there were less than 10 rooms left under our courtesy rate (if i understood her correctly), so if at all possible, make your reservations for the Hyatt soon.

Wizards... short creatures... elves... a young lad with a big destiny... Nope, we're not talking about 'Lord of the Rings,' but instead: Harry Potter! Following TORn's wildly successful series of LOTR-Trilogy "watch and chats," we're starting up this weekend with the much-requested Harry Potter series. This Saturday at 5:30 pm EST we will start off with "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (that's the Philosopher's stone to everyone but us obviously confused Americans). Following that, "Chamber of Secrets" on 2/18, "Prisoner of Azkaban" on 2/25, and after a short break, "Goblet of Fire" on March 11th, following its release on DVD on 3/7.
Join us tomorrow on our IRC server at 5:30 pm EST when we pop our copies of the film into the DVD player. After the usual confusion, at around 5.30pm EST we'll all press play on our individual players and proceed to cheer and jeer (or discuss and argue, if you like!) the finer points of the film.

Bash 2006 - are any of you planning to go?
It's going to be dependent on my finances at that point, but at least it's on the west coast this time, right? So no 5+ hour flights...

This weekend, Hall of Fire is going to the geek side. Instead of a topic chat, we'll be hauling out our copies of the Fellowship of the Ring EE DVD, dusting them off and popping them into the DVD player. And after the usual confusion, at around 5.30pm EST we'll all press play on our individual DVD players and proceed to cheer and jeer (or discuss and argue, if you like!) the finer points of the film.
We'd be delighted if you could join us.
We plan to take a break midway through the film, to allow for stretching of fingers and backs. Barliman will be on hand to serve drinks and snacks (and to enforce the house rules).* * * WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN? Saturday January 14 Time zone conversions:
Not sure what time the chat will be where you are? Check this little conversion table out for some help.
America: 5.30pm EST (New York) 4.30pm CST (Chicago) 3.30pm MST (Salt Lake City) 2.30pm PST (Los Angeles)
Europe: 10.30pm GMT (London) 11.30pm CET (Paris)
Asia-Pacific: 6.30am AWST (Sunday 11th) Perth 8.30am AEST (Sunday 11th) Brisbane 9.30am AEDT (Sunday 11th) Sydney 11.30am NZDT (Sunday 11th) Wellington
WHERE? On TORn's IRC server, in the #thehalloffire channel. After joining the server, type /join #thehalloffire to get there. If you've never been to TORn's IRC server before, you can join through our java applet and type /join #thehalloffire once you're signed in. We recommend you visit our FAQ for some guidelines on using our IRC service. Barliman’s is a place for good conversation about JRR Tolkien’s works. We welcome you to our community and ask that you, and all guests, abide by some simple guidelines. HOW?
Once everyone is in #moviechat and has their DVD ready to go, the ops will moderate the room and have a countdown to "Play." I expect that we will be able to give minute-markers throughout the evening for latecomers. A break will be taken midway through -- the exact point will be announced in the topic. * * * That's all, folks! See you this weekend!

For those who don't check TORn's front page very often ...
Just a reminder that the two guiding lights behind the creation of Ringers: Lord of the Fans will join us for a live Q&A chat in the Hall of Fire on Saturday December 17 at the special time of 5pm EST.
That's right! Cliff Broadway (aka TORn staffer Quickbeam) and Carlene Cordova (aka TORn staffer Asfaloth) will be on hand to answer your questions about the experience of making Ringers. They will discuss the unique Tolkien community, so vibrant and vital even 50-plus years after Lord of the Rings was first published. [More]

Everyone is reminded that Alan Lee, the acclaimed LOTR illustrator and Academy Award-winning conceptual designer for the film trilogy, will join us in the Hall of Fire (on the TORn IRC server) on Saturday November 5 at 6pm EST for a live question and answer session.
Alan will be answering questions on his work illustrating Lord of the Rings, his involvement with Peter Jackson and WETA as a conceptual designer for the Lord of the Rings film Trilogy and his new book The Lord of the Rings sketchbook.
The book presents more than 150 of Lee's celebrated illustrations to show how his imagery for both the illustrated Lord of the Rings and the films progressed from concept to finished art. In addition, the book contains 20 full-color plates and numerous examples of the conceptual art produced for Peter Jackson's film adaptation.
Alan has been creating fantasy artwork since 1978. He's illustrated writers such as Dennis L McKiernen, Ursula K. Le Guin and has also worked as a set designer on the films Legend (1985), Erik the Viking (1989) and Merlin (1998).
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tolkien, a new 1,200 page edition of The Lord of the Rings was planned. Alan Lee was chosen as the illustrator. With 50 colour plates, the book was a stunning artistic and commercial success.
Although the chat will not be held until November 5, you can still submit your question for Alan in advance simply by e-mailing it to us at halloffire@theonering.net. We'll ask it for you on the day!
Alan's United States book tour
Alan Lee is currently touring the United States to promote and talk about his new book during October. His events will will feature a slide show, a Q&A with fans, and a booksigning. You can also order your copy from Amazon here.
And if you want to find out more about his tour, including dates and locations, check out Alan's tour blog! Get along, ask some questions, buy the book and get it signed by Alan, himself.

I worked on Elrond over the weekend and he now has a total of 515 Tolkien trivia questions. There's a bunch of LoTR ones now, to counter all the harder Silmarillion ones. If you fancy testing your knowledge (or my coding), head into #bag_end (maybe he should be in #imladris or something :x) and type !ask to make him do his stuff ...

Our wonderful friend from The One Ring Circus fame, wyvernwell will be showing her film, "The Fellowship of the Bags" at a LOTR-related event. This is from wyvernwell's LJ:
*********************************
The complete Lord of the Rings trilogy will be shown at a charity screening taking place in San Francisco on August 18 from 11AM to midnight. The screening will be held at the Presidio Theater, 2340 Chestnut Street in San Francisco, from 11AM to midnight.
This is a benefit for the Cure Autism Now Foundation. All proceeds will go directly to this foundation to help autistic kids and their parents by providing grants for research and support programs. (http://www.cureautismnow.org)
Between screenings of the features, there will be activities including raffles, door prizes, a costume contest, and intermission programming, which is where “Fellowship of the Bags” comes in.
Details on the event are at http://www.sftrilogy.org/
For more about Fellowship of the Bags, see http://www.fellowshipofthebags.com/
Please come and support this worthy cause – and cheer Fellowship of the Bags’ “theatrical” debut! ******************************* cross-posted
