Tori: Give .in.my.head. |
] |
i am so nervous/excited about tomorrow i feel like i'm gonna throw up. Maysa and i have already texted, we're meeting in front of the Paramount between 7-7:30 am. i fear this might be the last time i get to go all out like this in terms of making it an all day thing, but who knows. i've got my camera charged and the memory card only has one picture on it. My big green bag is packed with the following: -Pele flat to hopefully be signed by T -Tons of dvds for Maysa -Snacks -A copy of Anne Waldman's "Manatee/Humanity" to be given to Tori, hopefully right before we have our super cool chat about writers block -My ticket: Row G Orch seat 6
we might go out to dinner after the m&g, and then Kim is heading up after she gets off work. my bag is actually pretty heavy with all that stuff in it. Hopefully i'll have room for the "bring your own sun" tote, the "flavor of sin" tee and a program. i will MAKE room for that shit. i really wish they had a shirt that said "Slutty Goth" on it.
so today there have been rumors about a Tori Christmas record, sparked by a little blurb in the current Billboard magazine. While i aknowledge that this project might just be a rumor, or be crap, i don't care. i love Xmas and Xmas music and Tori, so this is an epic win for me if it turna out to be true. i ope someone asks her about it. the article has a drop date of 3 November.
i'll spend tonight and part of tomorrow trying to cultivate "the fiercest calm" so as to not die from excitement!

First and foremost: Happy birthday, ghosty4! I hope your birthday has been fantastic thus far and gets even better. :) *hugs and confetti*
And in honor of said birthday, we shall... pick apart a scathing review of Teen Witch, a movie so awesome that some people just cannot grasp the awesome contained within. For that, I pity them. But mostly I do have one thing to clarify with said review: JK Rowling didn't rip Teen Witch off [as awesome as it is], she totally swiped the awesome of another witch movie/series. Yes. The Worst Witch.
Fine. I didn't pick it apart. I just pointed and laughed at the clips contained within. Cuz, y'know, as awesome as TW is, it's not exactly perfect, though I will always love it. Always.
And thus concludes our daily blather for now. Witches and birthdays, a combination made in geek heaven. :D

Realized that I can solve part of my resume length problem by listing "freelance web designer" as a job! Since I have completed two paid projects so far, one of which is ongoing, I think this is perfectly fair. And it makes me look all competent. :)

Frank McCourt just died!
He wrote Angela's Ashes, an autobiographical book about the early twentieth-century Irish and Irish immigrant experience (and the author's generally dysfunctional childhood.) It was a moving and unforgettable read.
It's so sad and strange to think that voice and those memories are now only accessible to us through his books.
"The current of his feeling failed; he became his admirers."
(That's from Auden's "In Memory of W.B. Yeats," appropriate as it also has the line, "Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry.")

| the origin of hello |

This is absolutely new to me! I think I will start using "hallo" or "hullo" in alternate world and historical writing (although because "hello" is so ensconced in our current language, there's an argument about using it in order to not be jarring).

| writing like a girl |
[19 Jul 2009|09:46pm] |
This blog post is pretty appalling - it's about a writer who was mistaken for female and subsequently told he couldn't write a convincing male voice (because, I don't know, girls can only write about relationships and possibly unicorns).
The first moral of this story is that STUPID MEN ARE STUPID, why are they so stupid. For real.
Second moral is that writers probably shouldn't worry very much about what people of the opposite gender "are like," because the answer is never going to be simple or singular. Figure out what your character's experiences are first.

"Mad World (live)" by Tori Amos |
] |
I SAW TORI!!!!!
Okay, so it's late so I'll probably do a longer review later, but for now, this is the setlist for Tori's show earlier tonight at the Greek Theater:
Give Siren -- Band Intro -- Graveyard (solo) Cornflake Girl Icicle Sugar Marys of the Sea Bells for Her Carbon Liquid Diamonds
Solo -- Tori tells a story -- Mary Jane Jackie's Strength
Band Returns China Curtain Call Fast Horse Space Dog Mother Revolution Precious Things Strong Black Vine
Encore Police Me Big Wheel Tear In Your Hand
Even though we didn't get anything from Pele (unless you count "Graveyard"), Venus or SLG, I thought it was a really good spread of her work throughout the years. China was especially beautiful - probably the highlight of the night. I took a whole bunch of pictures on my camera, but I'm pretty sure only about about three of them came out anywhere near decent.
Also, to the people sitting around us (and particularly the one sitting behind us) Liquid Diamonds, China, Big Wheel and Tear In Your Hand are not sing-a-longs! There are no bouncing balls at Tori Amos concerts, people! [/rant]

Tori! Tori! Tori!
So, if all goes as planned, I'm going to see Tori with Tracy week after next. Tori! Tori! Tori! I'm slightly enthused [had you noticed?] because I've never seen Tori live before. Never, ever, ever. I've never even had anyone offer to go with me before. I've paid her for half my ticket and now I must squirrel away money for food on the road and maybe goodies there. Dunno. Like I said, never been. So if you've been and you've got stories to share or things not to do, please do be sharing. *offers cookies, cakes, and other nummy things*
Oh, and on an unrelated note, if you notice NCIS on a particularly good sale somewhere, other than season 1, lemme know, k? I've found that since I went for that for birthday, people here actually buy with the hopes I'll watch with 'em.

"Jubilee" by Brooks William on FolkAlley.com |

Recently, dragon_fall showed me a few episodes of the television series "Supernatural." It was good, and I really liked the "early X-Files" feel of it. However, I wasn't really able to get into it and it took me a few days to figure out why. Finally, I realized that in the episodes I saw, all the women on this series were either evil, or weak and in need of being saved by a man.
I just can't get into that. For me, a strong, real female character is essential to a good plot, whether it's a movie, a T.V. series, novel, short story, comic, etc. I tend to look up to and admire such female characters and without one, I simply can't connect with the story line.
Yesterday, xenokattz linked to a post by cidercupcakes called the Home Team: The 2009 Match where people nominate their favourite female characters. There are some amazing female characters on the list and there has been so much response, that cidercupcakes had to make a second post. I perused through both Part I and Part II and found lots of female character that I just had to show my support for. Peruse through the list yourself and show your support for your favourite female character!
But even as great as the list already was, there were still a few essential female characters that were mysteriously absent. So of course, I just had to nominate the following:
Ana Lucia Cortez (LOST) The Unicorn/Lady Amalthea (The Last Unicorn) Detective Olivia Benson (Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit) ADA Alexandra Cabot (Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit) Morgaine of the Fairies (The Mists of Avalon) Evelyn "Evie" Carnahan-O'Connor (The Mummy Movies) Scarlett O'Hara (Gone With the Wind) Joan Girardi (Joan of Arcadia) Elaine Benes (Seinfeld)

I'm a bit of a fandom junkie, but mostly I'm a message board whore. I make no effort to hide this. I've said it before, in fact, and if you asked, I'd freely cop to it. To me, message boards are the perfect blend of crazy good and crazy bad, and I like to see how long I can tough it out before the bad crazy sends me running for the hills permanently. For instance, I loved the insanity that old school Charmed fandom bred without even trying. Board. Wars. I mean, really. It doesn't get better than that. I thrive on behind the scenes fan-gossip more than I do actual celeb gossip nine times out of ten and I guess it's because I might interact with head level One crazy fan, but the odds are good I will never run into, say, Holly Marie Combs.
But, because I've long since realized that the bad crazy will almost always win and almost always chase me away from whatever board I currently call home, I tend to lurk more than anything. Which means I miss the fun of jumping right into the fray, but I also don't get smacked around quite as much as I used to. That said, the AG fandom is crazier than I really thought was physically possible for a fandom to be. First rule of fandom, I guess. Toy fandom is crazier than all other fandom. Even the Blake/Leighton fandom, and that's cuckoo.
Current proof of this? Is it offensive to refer to your slightly... unusual habits concerning how you play/deal with your dolls as OCD if you don't actually have it? I dunno. I think it depends on how you word your insanity, personally. I find some people who say that they're soooooo OCD annoying as hell. But I'd probably find them annoying as hell no matter what they said, so really, I'm a bit biased on that, huh? I get that the general idea was that over time, and especially when dealing with Crazy Toy People*, you come up with habits/rituals/quirks. And instead of trying to cover the various words other people might use [quirks, people. When in doubt, go with quirks!] they went with weird/OCD/whatever. And naturally, there was a tiny freakout over how obnoxious it is for people to use OCD in such context.
Seriously? This is the issue you choose to rally behind on a board where people cannot differentiate between your and you're? I get it. You've got it and you don't like people misrepresenting your disease or perpetuating the stereotype. Gotcha.
But all I hear is wah-wah-my-pain! You don't understand my pain! Wah-wah-wah. Like the Peanuts adults.
To be fair, I do this for all things that can basically be boiled down to "my pain! my pain! You don't understand my pain and are thus unqualified to discuss my pain!" and it's really uncomfortable when it's coming from the mouth [hands?] of someone I like. So... that's why the good mischievous gods gave us LJ. To bitch without getting smacked good and proper.
* Hi. Totally am one, so I get to say these things. I've got a badge and everything.

from One tree hill - Gavin DeGraw - наслаждайтесь!
I don’t need to be anything other than a prison guard’s son I don’t need to be anything other than a specialist’s son I don’t have to be anyone other than the birth of two souls in one Part of where I’m going is knowing where I’m coming from (Chorus) I don’t want to be anything other than what I’ve been trying to be lately All I have to do is think of me and I'd be somebody I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wondering what I gotta do Or who I’m supposed to be I don’t want to be anything other than me
