AboutThis community is devoted to Ukrainian Culture (history, classical and folk music, literature, poetry, fine arts) of the Hetmanate and post-Hetmanate eras, as well as latter day revivals of all these arts.
It is dedicated to the memory of my childhood friend Andrij Rybalka, an aspiring poet and a career emergency room doctor. He was irradiated while on ER duty during the Chernobyl disaster, and died 3 years later, leaving behind a young widow and a small daughter, the omnipresent and everlasting images from Ukrainian folk-song. He was also 3/4 Ukrainian and 1/4 Jewish, which was enough to have caused him much humiliation from the Soviet authorities, as he combined the best of both. Therefore this community is firmly PHILOSEMITIC, and based on the old cossack testament: "Тримайся, синку, ближче до жидів, багатим будеш."
All intelligent comments/questions/postings are welcome in Ukrainian, Russian, English or Italian. These are the languages spoken by the Hetman.
Posting in more than one language simultaneosly is more than welcome.
Culturally relevant MP3 files (for educational purposes) essential. These will be made visible/available to MEMBERS ONLY.
Vulgarity is strictly forbidden. So is "sharovarnist' або "шароварна культура" as well as any disrespect directed at the Ukrainian language.
Antisemitism is proscribed as the basest of жлобство.
Russophobia is unwelcome, regardless of the Imperial politics. Ditto Anti-Polonism, for the same reasons during earlier eras.
The so called "progressive music" of the R&R or Euro-Pop kind is unwelcome, as it is out of our frame of reference. This community is not mass-culture based, regardless of how much we may enjoy Vopli Vidoplyasova.
All questions and comments on the inner workings of the community are to be directed to its Hetman: Masaccio.
