5 Things You Didn't Know About ANTM Winner McKey!
Seventeen has a brief interview with McKey on their site. Let's begin, shall we?:

You wanna be on top? McKey (a.k.a. Brittany Sullivan), the 20-year-old Illinois native and supergorgeous winner of America's Next Top Model Cycle 11, came by the Seventeen offices to talk about her big win and fill us in on all the stuff you didn't get to see or hear on the show. What don't we know? Lots of things....

1. Tomboy McKey got into modeling because of a knee injury. "I used to be an incredible tomboy — played every sport under the sun," says McKey. "I was heartbroken and devastated when I got injured. When I was 15 years old, I had to have my first of three knee surgeries, which put me out for six months. I was so bored out of my mind that I did a modeling competition called the 'Elite Model Look,' and then I won the regional competition, so I got a contract with Elite."

2. Even though she's a Top Model now, she wasn't always so popular. "Growing up, my biggest obstacle was having people accept me for who I am. I never had many friends. I had a few really close ones, but really I was just the biggest outcast ever in my school. And people will still talk about me and be like, 'Your sister was the weirdo who wore chain mail to school, wasn’t she?' Yup, that was a few years ago. Get over it, guys."

3. Her majorly inspiring dad is her role model. "My biggest role model in my life is my father. He was born four-and-a-half months premature and was born blind, deaf, and mute. His sight eventually developed and he learned how to speak using vocal cord vibrations and just feeling what it felt like to speak, and recently he got a cochlear implant, so he’s got, like, 80 percent hearing in one of his ears, so it’s really amazing. And he’s just a driven person and he’s so determined and wonderful."

4. She's a future model/doctor! She's majoring in politics and biology at Ripon College in Wisconsin and she's premed. McKey plans to model overseas (in Europe) and then go to med school. How was it mixing modeling and schoolwork? "We filmed semifinals right before finals in school," says McKey, "so I had to take off the week before finals and tell my teachers 'I can’t tell you where I’m going, I’m just leaving,’ and my teachers were just like, 'Uhhh, what?'"

5. Her BF is a cage fighter! And boy, is he proud of her! "He's such a gloater. He's a cage fighter, so whenever he gets a medal he wears it for three days afterward. Now, he's like to everybody, 'My girlfriend just won America's Next Top Model!' He's a really nice guy, though. He's just a really good person."

There's a lot of things that we don't know about McKey thanks to those damn editors.

But from her post show stuff, she seems way cool.

Okay, so she had a contract with Elite after the knee injury, but she went to compete for another contract with the same agency? I don't get it.
Don't worry, this isn't me hating on McKey - this is me being clueless about modeling and agencies and shit like that. Lol.

I liked this mini-interview. She was ridiculously dull on the show (much like another overrated contestant, but that one has a lot of friends), and she's nowhere near my favorite winner, but I guess I warmed up to her a bit because of the facts. In some of these aspects, we're somewhat similar. Mainly on fact 3, even though my dad was not born blind, deaf, or mute. But really, that's awesome for her.

But... I knew all this already. :d And I didn't read it from Seventeen (it's not my type of mag anywho).

She was given some pretty bad editing in the show. I can see pretty clearly that she's not dull or silent, but they seemed so obsessed over showing us more of Marjorie's nervousness and Elina's complaining to even bother and let us get to know the winner. It's pretty stupid, imo. What's the point of choosing McKey as winner when Analeigh was clearly portrayed in such a likeable light? They might as well have let Analeigh win for all their editing showed us.

I agree: I knew items 4 & 5 from the Ripon College interview that was posted here earlier and having actually read a (free) copy of Seventeen with Miley Cyrus on the cover, it sucks. It's like Cosmo for teenagers...or maybe pre-teens, since when I was a teenager I read Cosmo.

Totally. When I was a teenager, I read a friend's Seventeen issue and from there decided never to touch it again. It never was my thing and now it seems much less so, heh.

Even wishful thinking doesn't make bags under the eyes go away.
You're absolutely correct. I hadn't been among the ones to want Analeigh to win, but I felt the need to rant about the editing. It just doesn't make sense to me that they didn't really try to even let us get to know McKey before she won. It seemed to make people not want her to win, I think.

omg those teen mags are so awful and give the worst dating advice... i remember one article that said "guys like funny girls, say something quirky when he says oh I haven't seen you awhile where have you been, respond by saying, climbing mount everest!" I swear to god. poor 13 year old girls, as if they don't have enough problems.

I read Seventeen when I was 12 or 13, but by the time I was 15 or 16, I wouldn't touch those teen mags. It's all trash designed to guide you towards consumerism and a subservient hetero relationship... at least that's how I saw it

I agree with the hetero relationship stuff in those mags, ugh. In those magazines alternative sexualities don't exist. Like a Glamour poll that said that most readers prefer not to see women holding hands because it didn't "look right." (rolls eyes)

Her first contract expired a long time ago, if that clarifies anything.

As for the med school thing, ya know, she's not gonna be able to model forever. The industry's all about being young, and her career is probably already cut down significantly by the fact that she's associated with a reality TV show. So it makes sense that she'd want to have a backup plan.

I love how people banter about med school as a back up plan. Like it's something you just kind of sign up, show up, and bam! You're a doctor. *sigh* It shows very much how young she is....

[info]vividzephyr

I didn't get that it was a backup plan, just that it was what she wanted to do as a career after modeling. It'll take her a long time just getting that degree, but it's not impossible to do modeling while working towards it. My cousin did something like that -- it took her forever to get her degree, but she got it and she has work. But then again, my cousin's a work-a-holic. :/ So I dunno.

i agree that i don't see it as a back-up plan. i could be wrong, but my understanding was that she was already in school, prior to the show. i auditioned for cycle 13 a few months ago, right before i started my senior year of college. modelling can only be done at a certain point in your life, whereas degrees/school can be picked up again.

I thought that it was against the ANTM rules to be in the show if you've already had a proper modeling contract or been in some sort of national campaign?

yeah i have no idea as well. Saleisha Stowers from cycle 9 is the winner and there's a lot of argument about the topic. You can see some in youtube.

sometimes its just so weird.

the rules state that the modeling contract / national campaign cannot have been within the past 5 years i think. if she was 15 when she got that contract, and 20 now that'd be 5 years give or take some months. they probably just compromised as the original agency was still elite.

From the Cycle 11 Eligibility Requirements List:

10. You must not have previous experience as a model in a national campaign within the last five (5) years
(including, but not limited to, appearances on television and print advertisements). Additionally, if you are currently
represented by an agent or manager and are selected to be interviewed for the Series, you must provide sufficient
evidence to the Producers that you will be able to effectively terminate such representation prior to your
participation in the Series, if selected. If selected to participate in the Series, you must terminate, prior to your
participation, any representation which conflicts with the terms of your participation.

The full requirements can be found here: http://www.cwtv.com/images/topmodel/antm_cycle11_eligibility.pdf

Basically, actually having been assigned to an agency before entering is perfectly fine as long as they're not still signed during the production of the show. I suspect if there were tighter regulations against girls who already were signed, then most of the contestants wouldn't be eligible.

I was so bored out of my mind that I did a modeling competition called the 'Elite Model Look,' and then I won the regional competition, so I got a contract with Elite.

To everyone who's perturbed with McKey over having a contract with Elite before now, perhaps it was only with a local agency such as Elite Chicago. I'm not saying that Elite Chicago is anything to sneeze at but it's not the same as the New York agency. Being signed to the agency in New York is a big step up and I say good for her.

Also, I'm thinking Analeigh would have been signed before ANTM because I've seen photos of her walking for LA Fashion week so I don't know why everyone is making such a fuss over McKey being signed before.
