toonowrimo has become the focal point for daily word wars.
A word war is where two or more (ideally) writers get together in a chat room and, rather than chat, go off to their separate word processors and write intensively for half an hour. At the end of half an hour, everyone returns, reports wordcount, takes a quick break, and then does it again.
The point isn't so much to win, although the person with the highest wordcount gets cheered, as it is to make an effort at turning what is essentially a solitary pursuit into a slightly more social activity. It also provides a schedule, which can be very helpful when you don't want to do your damned words. :)
Chatting during the wars is actively discouraged.
The wars are beginning, by and large at 9:30am Eastern (which time zone I use to keep it simple: everybody can bloody well figure out what Eastern is in relation to themselves), and sometimes run all day. Check the community for evening wars!
People who know why it's called TooNoWriMo will understand the name, and people who don't, won't. :)
