Okay.

I'm finally sifting through old emails, LJ notifications and [info]tommywestphall to make sense of all the suggestions and queries since our last major update... six months ago!

Here we go...

Thanks to Thom Holbrook's site - details to a fully-fledged crossover between CSI: New York and Cold Case

Morley Cigarettes grabs four more series:

  • Nash Bridges
  • Prison Break
  • Space Above and Beyond
  • That 70s Show

The fictional Los Angeles Tribune brings in (via Lou Grant, which is already on the grid):

  • Columbo
  • Moonlighting
  • 24
  • Matt Huston
  • Wonder Woman
  • Remington Steele
  • City of Angels
  • Burke's Law (1994)

Columbo then brings in Mrs Columbo (and the various series she morphed into)

Moonlighting crossed over with Hart to Hart

Burke's Law (1994)
brings in its predecessors Burke's Law and Amos Burke - Secret Agent

The fictional Hudson University (originating with Law & Order) brings in:

  • Tru Calling
  • Without a Trace
(To answer a recent question, Hudson University also connects to the DC Universe series devised by Bruce Timm, as well as the DC comic universe itself)

The fictional Trans-Global Airlines (which actually originated in the Airport film series but got a mention on Matlock) brings in:

  • Young and the Restless
  • All My Children
  • Emergency

and possibly Quincy ME

Thanks to [info]tele_toby and his research, we find...

The Young and the Restless brings in The Bold and the Beautiful and As the World Turns

All My Children
brings in General Hospital, One Life to Live, Port Charles and Loving

Emergency
brings in Sierra and Adam 12

Adam 12 brings in Dragnet and Dragnet 67 (anyone know if Dragnet 67 is connected to the two revivals in the 80s and 90s?)

Also...

The Double Meat Corporation links Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the short-lived Andy Barker P.I.

The planet Gallifrey links Doctor Who with The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which brings in the live action series Ninja Turtles the Next Mutation

And, finally, things that don't count...

Bernie Kopell did not appear as his Love Boat character on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, even though his character name was Doc

Columbo is not connected to Magnum P.I.

And the fictional magazine The National Inquisitor is currently being left out of the Westphall-verse to allow for more research on the subject.

That's an additional 35 series. The Grid and Key have not been updated yet. Let's discuss this compiled list and see if they have unearthed any further connections to expand the Tommy Westphall Universe.

We've got fictional hospitals, fictional churches and now a fictional University.

Hudson University - mostly seen on Law & Order - also brings in Tru Calling and Without a Trace?

Anyone got more info on this Tommy-verse college?

The anonymous tipper who suggested someone smoked a Morley cigarette in the fifth season premiere of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation was only one season out, it was in the sixth season premiere, "Bodies in Motion" - as backed-up by a discussion of the episode.

Obviously, one CSI brings in the other two CSI: Miami and CSI: New York. Anybody know if these shows connect beyond their franchise?

A little help... Las Vegas and French L&O [Oct. 25th, 2006|08:55 am]

Two things I need help on:

- can anyone confirm a possible sighting of Morley's cigarettes in the fifth season premiere of CSI, "Viva Las Vegas"? Got an email to suggest that the victim of the episode or possibly Warrick smoked the fictional brand in that episode... and it'd be nice to get the CSI franchise in!

- thanks to [info]johnmunch (who else?), there's word that Richard Belzer will appear as John Munch on the French version of Criminal Intent that is being developed over there. No question as to whether that show is in development - Variety confirms it. But the IMDB doesn't list this new show under star, Vincent Perez.

What I need is details on when the program might premiere and if, indeed, Belzer will be guest starring on it. As pointed out here, this will be the first non-English language show in the Westphall Universe...

Thanks to [info]willdevine, we have some more new inclusions to the Tommyverse: the Happy Days family.

According to TV.com, Balkai & Larry on Perfect Strangers have a toilet provided to them by Cunningham Hardware, Milwaulkee, Wisconsin. This is the fictional store and location of Howard Cunningham's business in Happy Days.

Happy Days spun off Joanie Loves Chachi, Laverne & Shirley, Mork and Mindy and had character crossovers with Blanksie's Beauties and Out of the Blue!

Thanks to the hive mind, yesterday's avalanche picks up five more series... and ushers them into Tommy's mind...

Girlfriends was spun-off this season, creating the first Tommy series to originate on The CW, The Game.

Meego contacted the castaways on Gilligan's Island.

Gilligan's Island met the cast of The New Gidget.

The New Gidget was a sequel to the original Sally Field series, Gidget.

Both Gidget and The Flying Nun's Sister Betrille were members of a band called The Gorries when they were growing up!

Thanks to [info]tele_toby, [info]truthbealiar - and [info]momsdinercodelj for confirmation.

Thanks again to [info]johnmunch for getting us into this little mess of sitcom madness!

From The Hughleys to... ABC's TGIF line-up! [Oct. 21st, 2006|01:27 pm]

While westphallian and I continue to work on updating the Grid and the Key (yes, yes, it's been a while...), this week has been an embarassment of riches... if indeed that's what you can call "Heroes" and "Miss Match" being welcomed to the Tommyverse.

Now [info]johnmunch has discovered a link between The Drew Carey Show and The Hughleys! And The Hughleys is connected to The Parkers... and that's where the avalanche begins, bringing in lots of sitcoms from all over the dial!
  • The Drew Carey Show
    • The Hughleys
      • The Parkers
        • Moesha
          • Girlfriends
          • Clueless
            • Sabrina the Teenage Witch
              • Teen Angel
              • You Wish
              • Boy Meets World
                • Step by Step
                  • Family Matters
                    • Meego
                    • Perfect Strangers
                    • Full House
                      • Hanging with Mr Cooper

We'll explain all the connections once we update, but in this instance, all of the crossovers are actor crossovers! Characters moving from one series to another. Melissa Joan Hart's Sabrina the Teenage Witch visited four series - making her another Tommy Westphall Fiver!

Some of these shows have appeared in the Tommyverse before, but disappeared when their connections were inaccurate. But this time they are full-fledged crossover characters - and the Tommyverse just got bigger (but not all that much funnier... have you seen these shows???)

The short-lived legal series, "Miss Match" - from producer Darren Star and starring Alicia Silverstone, is connected to the Tommyverse via a Judge, who must have relocated from Los Angeles to Boston. But stranger things have happened in Tommy's head...

Writer Jeff Rake, who helped create Miss Match, moved on to "Boston Legal" in 2004 and imported one of his creations in David E Kelley's series. Actress Anne Betancourt appeared as Judge Isabel Hernandez in both Miss Match and Boston Legal.

Heroes' Hiro Nakamura and his best friend played roulette and poker at the fictional Montecito Hotel... which brings the very new show - and the biggest hit of the new season - into the Tommyverse.

The Three Faces of Who [Sep. 6th, 2006|07:08 am]

crossoverman
[Tags|, , ]

Doctor Who, the character - more rightly refered to as simply The Doctor, has had ten actors playing him within accepted Doctor Who canon. But after detailing his inclusion into the Westphall Universe, it occurs to me that Doctor Who isn't merely one series - it has had three incarnations.

Actually, this is no revelation. While each of the three series follows continuity pretty much to the letter, most who fans and the BBC recognise the difference between the original run and the current series... with the canon Fox TV movie pilot intervening in between.

Yes, Who canon is confusing.

And I'm not sure how the Grid is going to look yet, but the stats are:

  • Doctor Who (1963-1989) - BBC
  • Doctor Who [pilot only] (1996) - Fox
  • Doctor Who (2005-????) - BBC

And owing to this post by [info]momsdinercodelj, it looks like we've got a legit connection between Doctor Who and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as I explain:

The Tenth Doctor says in "The Christmas Invasion" (while wearing a pair of pyjamas during his advenutre): "Very Arthur Dent. Now there was a nice guy." Which seems much more than Ten throwing off another pop culture reference.

Arthur Dent being the protagonist of Hitchhikers - who wakes up one morning to find his home and planet Earth scheduled for demolition. He spends most of his adventures in his... well, I said pyjamas. But really it's in reference to his bath robe.

Tommy and The Doctor [Sep. 5th, 2006|10:42 am]

crossoverman
[Tags|, , , ]

No, not the doctors of St Elsewhere. A Doctor Named Who. Or, actually, not named Who. We don't know his name. His show is Doctor Who and it's a piece of science fiction legend.

Sitting here watching Doctor Who's "The Rise of the Cybermen", I remembered this post by [info]eljuno - which brings in a few new shows into the Tommyverse.

The nexus is another British legend, Sci Fi sitcom Red Dwarf. In the episode "Psirens", the crew of the Red Dwarf come across a space ship graveyard - which includes a Klingon Bird of Prey from the Star Trek universe, a Weyland-Utani ship from the Alien series of films (Weyland-Utani also part of Angel and Firefly canon), as well as an Eagle ship from the TV series Space: 1999.

In summary: Trek brings in Red Dwarf, which brings in Space: 1999 and Doctor Who, which brings in K9 and Company, Torchwood and the upcoming Sarah Jane Investigates.

New connections to Lost [Apr. 18th, 2006|09:26 am]
smashsc
[Tags|, ]

We have on definite new connection to the Tommyverse through Lost and other possibilities. (I don't actually watch Lost so if any of my Lost canon details are off, please correct me.)

  1. The family on Fox's series The War at Home took a trip using fictional Oceanic Airlines which also appears/appeared in Lost, JAG, and Diagnosis Murder.

  2. In a crossover that is sure to make [info]crossoverman pull out his hair while fighting with the grid. In the Jan 25th episode of Veronica Mars Veronica's fortune contained the numbers that won Hurley from Lost the lottery. This is a tenuous connection even for the Tommyverse, so I'm not sure if it counts. Both shows are already on the grid.

  3. The lottery numbers also appeared on Tripping the Rift which doesn't count for the Tommyverse since that is an animated show.

  4. On the balloon capsule (what? this Lost y'all love is bizarre) all of its sponsors are listed and among them is Nozz-a-la Cola. Nozz-a-la Cola is a fictional product created by Stephen King & mentioned and consumed in various Stephen King created properties. Sadly, Stephen King fans aren't quite as geeky as I thought they would be and I cannot find reference to which Stephen King TV shows/miniseries exactly have featured Nozz-a-la Cola. The Lost site that found the reference mentioned that Nozzala shows up in the series (mini-series) Kingdom Hospital but I cannot find any evidence that it is in any other King shows or miniseries such as The Dead Zone

  5. There is a side question of whether a miniseries should count in the Tommy-verse. My vote is for yes. We have TV shows on the grid that did not last as many episodes as most miniseries, so why not? The line between mini-series and tv show is getting continually more blurred.

  6. One last Lost related note: The UK version of The Office is linked to Lost in the Tommyverse. (Charlie of Lost once dated a girl whose father worked for a paper factory in Slough. The paper factory in Slough is the paper factory of The Office (UK).) But the US version of The Office is not connected to Lost. In the US version the character Dwight is a fan of Lost.

According to [info]truthbealiar, Richard Belzer appeared on the season (possibly series) finale of "Arrested Development". I believe he was on a few weeks ago as an unnamed character, but now he appeared as Professor Munch - which turned out to be an alias he was using for an undercover assignment!

Can anyone else give me more details? (Without spoiling "Arrested Development" for me :-)

I'm really excited that "Arrested Development" has made it into the Westphallverse in the nick of time - and also that Munch continues to hold his crown for greatest crossover character ever.

The Return of Norm (and other Crossovers) [Feb. 4th, 2006|02:06 pm]

[music |Veronica Mars - 2x12]

Thom Holbrook, the meticulous maintainer of Poobala.com's list of all television crossovers ever, has updated his page with a few crossovers we already have (Home Improvement/Thunder Alley, Strange Luck/The X Files, Blossom/Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and one we've previously listed and then removed...

- Drew Carey Show/Norm

Drew Carey guest starred on Norm as another character called Steve - and I'm sure there was an episode where Mimi was part of a Norm's dream story (or nightmare). However, it seems that Norm used to date Mimi back when she was better looking! Okay... that doesn't even bare thinking about. But Norm's in!

ETA: Also at Thom's page - info on a speculative Simpsons/Futurama crossover (I'm not convinced) and a Futurama/PJ's crossover (which is actually very cool)

ETA2: Apparently we sorted the Blossom thing out ages ago as it is still in the grid and key, so fiddled with this post a bit to make it look like I haven't gone completely mad...

[music |Radiohead]

While the St Elsewhere/Homicide hub isn't really under threat, The X-Files is challenging Hi Honey, I'm Home to the number of individual shows linked directly to it. The X-Files has nine series connected to it already.

Could this be the tenth? From IMDB:

"During a scene in a graveyard the camera pans past a headstone, which bears the names Diana and Nicholas Salinger with the year of death 1994. This is a reference to the late parents of the Salinger family featured in another Fox show, "Party of Five"(1994)."

Party of Five? Which puts two Matthew Fox incarnations into the Westphall-verse.

Can anyone give more information? Episode title?

ETA: Apparently it's from the 6th season episode, Milagro.

Veronica Mars joins the happy Westphall Universe with a fictional rental car company called Lariat which appeared in the sixth episode of Veronica's second season, "Rat Saw God". Guest Star Joss Whedon played Employee of the Month, Douglas.

Lariat was the car rental company that Mulder and Scully always used in "The X-Files"!

Now I won't be so concerned if Veronica starts investigating fat-sucking aliens or emotion vampires...

[mood | crazy]

Just in case you haven't been keeping up with the Tommyverse explosion in the thread below - here's where we stand.

Yoyodyne is a fictional company that first appeared in Thomas Pynchon's novels "V" and "The Crying of Lot 49". (No, his "V" bears no relation to the alien invasion TV series of the same name...)

It was also used in the feature film "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai". Apparently there was a pilot made for a series starring Dean Cain?!?!!!

QUESTION ONE - Did the pilot for the "Buckaroo Banzai" series ever air?

Yoyodyne has also appeared as a company in "The John Larroquette Show" (a reference to Pynchon's work) and in "Angel" and "Star Trek" (a reference to Buckaroo Banzai)

So this fictional company ties in the Tommyverse (through John Larroquette) with the Buffy and Trek verses - which drags with it Knight Rider.

QUESTION TWO - is a company that originated in a novel and a feature film a legitimate link? (If the "Banzai" pilot aired somewhere, anywhere, even on the SF channel or Trio or anywhere as a mere curio this point would be moot...)
