More Wanderers...
Well, time flies when... well, time just flies.

Our good friend [info]johnmunch sent us an update to his Westphall's Wanderers project months and months ago and I never got around to uploading it onto the site. So now that the 2006-07 season has come to an end, I waited until the project was further updated and now I've uploaded the entire thing here.

The Wanderers list keeps track of actual character crossovers between series, specifically listing the when and where - while our Key explains the whys and hows.

Additions to this update include Blossom, Civil Wars, Day by Day, I Dream of Jeannie, the very short-lived Public Morals and the very long-lived and still-running ER.

Enjoy! And one day, we'll update the Grid and the Key, too.

Your honesty is admirable, crossoverman.

So many questions, so little time ...

1.) Bernie Kopell makes an appearance as Doc in 'The Fresh prince of Bel-Air'. Anybody knows if this is Doc Adam Bricker from 'The Love Boat'? (Six new shows would hang on this).

2.) Georgette Baxter has an appearance on 'Hi Honey, I'm Home' - in which episode? (This would rope in three more shows. Any HHIH data beyond that found at tv.com and/or imdb is welcome, by the way.)

3.) Is there any way to connect 'Kung Fu' or its sequel show to the Tommyverse? (Thereby hang more than two dozen new shows!)

4.) Hmmm ... I forgot about number four. Oh well.

Awaiting replies from the hivemind ...

And the other Sarducci appearances will appear over time. They are covered by the Honeymooners' Rule.

But you can all forget about Elvira, hear? Her I consider to be in the same category as, say, Hulk Hogan and other public personas (personae? personals? oh well).

Kung Fu flying in

I think I finally found a way to bring Kung Fu into the universe, however it involves two movies and two fictional airlines

On an episode of Matlock he flew on Trans-Global Airlines, which was originally introduced in the movie Airport

In the movies sequel Airport 1975 the plane belonged to Columbia Airlines

An episode of the The Incredible Hulk took place aboard a CA flight

Li Sung a character that was originally on Hulk latter appeared on Kung Fu: The Legend Continues

This would also bring a number of new shows that are connected with the flights like Emergency

I know it involves movies but both me and johnmunch really hope that this counts

Wow, even for the Westphall universe, that's convoluted. It doesn't count.

how is this more convoluted then anything else on this site. You already established that fictional airlines count when you included oceanic. From what I can tell the airlines were major plot points, unlike cigarettes or a string of numbers which are only on screen for a little bit. I know how you fell about movies and I can understand how you mite not want to use it even though two of the shows are making clear references to the same movie series.

It's more convoluted because there are two different airlines that are only joined by the fictional reality of a movie series. End of story.

And it's not about two movies making reference to the same movie series.

For instance, the Yoyodyne mentioned in Star Trek and Angel is probably a reference to the movie Buckaroo Banzai. But they are connected because the company name is the same in both series. It doesn't need the outside knowledge to make the connection work.

Oceanic connects two different TV series, no matter where it originated.

Characters only
[info]johnmunch
2007-06-13 11:24 am UTC (link)
Thanks, RAF, for the connective tissue.

However, I do characters x-overs only for solidity's sake (cigarettes and airlines do not make the cut for me). But I will list cross-characters in movies anytime.

Li Sung in KFTLC? Who played that? If nothing else, this ropes in the Incredible Hulk.

The main nexus for the Warner/Powell/ZGT posse is f course the Gambler TV movie, 'The Luck of the Draw' - and since there are five Gambler TVM's in all a case could be made for them to be regarded as a TV series.

Add to this the movies 'Alias Jesse James' and 'Maverick' (Garner playing Pappy M. in both the series and the movie, so it is good enough for me), the latter of which as a huge cameo list on the riverboat - and presto, some 30 Western shows of the '50 to the '90 cluster up.

KFTLC, now, is the only show of that new mess set in the present which makes it the most probable candidate to link up with Tommy's Mind some day.

Great phrase, that: some day ...

KF:TLC is surely the best option to bring this whole group into the mix (unless some time travel option brings in one of the westerns). I had hoped Caine might appear on either Walker or Martial Law when those two were airing.

I wonder if there's any chance to find a link through Columbia Airlines to bring in the Hulk, as that is a link I'd never known of (with Li Sung).

And, not having seen the episodes in question, I am not too sure about the Li Sung connection either (sure would like to accept it, though. Anybody seen those?).

It is a sad fact that oriental actors were (are?) stereotyped in the worst possible way in Hollywood. Browsing through the imdb credits for Mako or Keye Luke or James Hong, one marvels at the sheer number of entries as 'Mr. Li/Lee', 'Wong' or some other equally generic Asian sounding name. To my unschooled ear, Li Sung may belong to that category as well.

Oh, I agree with the potential problem the stereotyping of Asian casting creates. I was able to find that one of Mako's Hulk<.i> episodes, "The Disciple," had him as a mentor for a character, apparently played by Rick Springfield, in a back-door spinoff. The description certainly sounded like a character who might work easily with the framework and context of the updated Kung Fu. I've got to dig it out, but I have a good episode guide to The Incredible Hulk and will look at what it says about the episodes.

Hudson University
(Anonymous)
2007-06-19 06:51 pm UTC (link)
Since some shows are linked through fictional institutions (St. Eligius Hospital, Yoyodyne Industries, Weyland-Utani Corporation), what about using Hudson University in NY? I've just heard it mentioned again on a rerun from Law & Order, and I know it's all over the Dick Wolf-corner of the universe (and thus part of the Tommy-verse already), but it also apparently appears in episodes of Tru Calling and Without a Trace. That would bring in two new series and perhaps more--Wikipedia doesn't have any further shows listed yet, although they do mention it being named in some DC Comics, but I'm fairly sure it is yet to be named in a comics-based adaptation.

How about Trans-Global Airlines which I mentioned earlier. It was on used in Matlock, Miami Vice, and Emergency!

Emergency! would also bring in 3 Dragnets 2 Adam 12s and 1 Sierra

TGA probly also showed up on other shows

Two More Suggestions
(Anonymous)
2007-07-01 06:13 pm UTC (link)
Okay, I have two I'd like to see your thoughts about, besides my earlier one about Hudson University (which seems to have definite possibilities)...

1. The gun used by Josh Randall (Steve McQueen) on Wanted: Dead or Alive was custom made for the show and referred to as the "Mare's Leg." So far as I can tell, the only references to such a gun now are from collectors who will custom make such a special weapon (a sort of "sawed-off Winchester"), and the gun was made just for that series (that is, it's not historical, like the Buntline used by Wyatt Earp). In fact, the gun is one way the film Wanted: Dead or Alive with Rutger Hauer linked to the series (Hauer's character was Randall's grandson and kept the original Mare's Leg). However, two other series have used a Mare's Leg: Lord Bowler carried one on The Adventures of Brisco County, and Zoe did the same on Firefly (and in Serenity). In fact, the identical prop made for Bowler is the prop used for Zoe. Using this connection, the Tommy-verse can branch from Firefly to Brisco County and Wanted: Dead or Alive (which was a spinoff of Trackdown, so that would be part of it as well). Even if there's a hesitation about the original Steve McQueen series, then surely the fact the same physical gun was used for Bowler & Zoe is a link (it's the same principle as using Weyland-Utani guns as a conduit).

2. There is an episode of The Cosby Show in which Cliff dreams he meets several Muppets. At the end of the episode, after Cliff has woken up, a final gag suggests the Muppets are not just in his dream, as some Muppet vegetables talk with Cliff. Even if you disregard that, I would think the "rules" here (including the entire Tommy concept, or the idea of Newhart being just a dream of Bob Newhart) would allow a Cosby/Muppets connection. I know you do not count cartoons (unfortunately, in my mind), but I don't know your view of puppets. The Muppets are clearly treated as "real" within the programs on which they appear, and (obviously, since I'm typing this up) I believe they should be used for further inclusion.

This particular episode was meant to connect to the "MuppetVision" part of The Jim Henson Hour (including some specific Muppets, such as Digit, to that series). Ignoring variety and talk shows and specials, the Muppets have, of course, starred in The Muppet Show, Muppets Tonight, Sam and Friends, Little Muppet Monsters (a puppet/live-action based half hour from one season of the cartoon Muppet Babies), Animal Jam, The Animal Show, The Hoobs, Bear in the Big Blue House, Big Bag, Secret Life of Toys, Wubbulous World of Dr. Seuss, Ghost of Faffner Hall, Mother Goose Stories, and Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street, both of which have international versions. There are actually many other crossovers through the Muppet shows, such as to Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Electric Company, and even Upstairs, Downstairs. (I could prepare a fuller list, in fact, if that is desired.)

Just two thoughts for further inclusion.

Hugh,

you got my respect for that infinite pain threshold you are demonstrating by delving that deep into Muppet lore. Either that or you are a very sick man, if I may say so with tongue firmly in cheek.

I like your WDOA connection. I had that show listed as a CBS@50 x-over with Walker, Texas Ranger. And the generational angle with the Rutger Hauer movie makes for another entry in the list. Still don't like the Firefly connection, though.

Did you know that Electric Company even offers a Jeffersons cameo?

Can you help me with that possible Doc Bricker appearance in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air I queried about earlier?

Well, I am a bit of a Muppet fan, pain threshold/sick or not! ;)

I'll check on the Doc Bricker reference--I can't remember that episode right now, but Fresh Prince was "good" to include links to other shows.

My argument for Firefly is to get those other Westerns in, and if the gun "exists" within that fictional universe, then it's a tie. I remember that Walker episode, which, like most of the CBS@50 stuff, was done as a dream. I don't know if it works with the Tommy-style dream, since Walker had fallen asleep while watching TV. So far as I remember, there were three of those which were presented as being within the context of the shows: Rod Serling on Early Edition, Rob Petrie on Diagnosis: Murder, and Marshall Dillon on Dr. Quinn.

I really do think the Muppets are a good conduit for connections. I didn't know about the Electric Company cameo with The Jeffersons--what was it? EC used to have "blackout" gags with other programs, often used at the intro. Two major ones that I remember are the original Mission: Impossible and an appearance from Ben Cartwright from Bonanza (a play on the old, "Excuse me, I can't hear you--I've got a banana in my ear!").

The dream appearances are something my hosts and me disagree about. I say put them in if it's characters.

The possible Doc Bricker appearence is in 'Ill Will' (FPoB-A ep. #43).

And I screwed up. It's not the Jeffersons in The Electric Company, but the Bunkers (show #166).

And where is that Mission:Impossible cameo? Ben Cartwright is joined by Little Joe, by the way (EC #150), all according to the most semi-useful site on the net, tv.com.

I feel a Warner Western flood coming on - if Bonanza can join the Tommyverse then everything is possible.

I had forgotten the Bunkers' appearance, but I had seen it along with the ones from Bonanza and M:I on a retrospective "Best of EC" special (that aired on Nick and then Noggin in the late 1990s). The M:I skit had Barney and Jim Phelps, and it was a gag leading to the titles. M:I is already on the list, as is All in the Family, but Bonanza would bring Ponderosa in with it, so the universe expands...

Yet another lead that I don't think is in the chart yet, but a friend just told me that the SG1 episode Threads has Daniel winding up in is the Waffle House from Dead Like Me. And he's even ordering waffles.

Sadly, neither is yet in the chart, but like the Grey's/OC connection I made, if one goes in, the other comes with!
