I had seen people talking on the internet about how to put a video to YouTube in better quality, so I tried it out. From my old tool of the trade, called the Avid, I did export a QuickTime movie file of the opening of the 1967 performance with these two songs: National Brotherhood Week and When You Are Old And Gray. They were both exported with the size of 640X480 pixels. And, yes, it is possible to select "watch in higher quality" under the video window on YouTube. But is it really better?
Well, just a little bit better. After all, this is black and white and originally taken from an analogue video tape of the 1960's. Of course there is noise on the master tape, which can be made less visible by adjusting the black level and make the video a little more juicy to watch.
But in reality my test posting to YouTube shows that this is not that much better. Truth be told, the biggest improvement is that those who are interested now can hear Tom Lehrer's introductions to the songs. I also realize that you need a really good computer and good bandwith to watch YouTube in "higher quality".
In my opinion this is still far away from the quality of broadcast masters or DVD's. Which of course is right, because the stuff on YouTube should not prevent people from buying the work of the artist's published there.
For those who are interested, you can click "watch in higher quality" under the video window after using this YouTube link:
