Hey ..!!
First time posting to this community.
I already saw a few entries about apartments but I didn´t find something for me, so I hope you can help me... :))

I´m going to Tokyo next year and I´m searching for an apartment in Shibuya near to Minato-ku, Roppongi. It´s for a long-term stay and I shouldn´t cost about 80,000¥.  Also it must not be so big, 10-15 qm would be great.
Do yo know any good organisation like tokyocityapartments.com (btw. their website isn´t working)  or something like that??

Sorry for my bad english.

Thank you very much!! :))

Garbage disposal - questions [03 Jul 2009|10:49am]

Hi there,

I've been living in Japan for almost 1,5 years now. Never had any problems so far until last night.
Friday is "plastic garbage" day in the region I live, so as always I took out my garbage on Thursday night.
Have to go by bike because it's like 5 min. away from here.
There's no special place for disposal in my inaka, so you just have to leave it in front of a house in a small street.

I went home and about 10 minutes later my door bell rang. It was already past 10:30pm and I saw an old man standing in front of my door.
Of course, at first I didn't want to open at all. Why should I? Then I saw he was carrying the 2 garbage bags I just threw away, so I figured I should open nevertheless.

He told me that he's living in the house in front of the garbage disposal spot. He was old, spoke fast and with a strong local dialect, so I couldn't understand him very well.
He told me that ever since April I'm causing him trouble because they won't take the garbage when there are things in there that don't belong in there.

Questions about garbage and how to separate and ranting and and and -___- )

One more question.
Paper garbage like for packages, newspapers etc. is being picked up only once a month. I read somewhere that milk cartons and the likes are paper garbage as well, but so far I've always thrown them into the burnable garbage bag!
Never had problems so far, but now I wanna make sure.

Thanks so much for ANY help!!!!
I really wanted to prevent to cause any trouble here and be the "バカ外人" and now I did it nevertheless (-___-) ... yet I feel it's (not only) my fault.

*sigh*

Essential Phrases for a tourist? [27 Apr 2009|07:27pm]

monsqueek
OK, its 2 weeks till I leave for Japan!!!

I just wanted to make sure I had learnt the essential phrases for a two week tourist?

Ive got some basic greetings memorised, a phrasebook in hand and an mp3 recording of "I am diabetic." and "I am hypoglycemic, I need something sweet to eat or drink" that I (or my mother) can play out loud on our phones. But - I would like to check the validity of these recordings to make sure they are accurate. Can anyone who speaks fluent enough Japanese let me email you these to double check them?

Is there anything else I absolutley need to know?

Is there anything I have to pack that I might not have thought of?

Can someone tell me if antihistamines are legal in Japan? Ive heard conflicting information?

Im starting to get nervous!!!

Tattoo magazines [26 Apr 2009|12:41pm]

lilitufire
Hi all,

I have a friend staying whose dad has requested a tattoo magazine for his tattoo artist. Any ideas of what is a good magazine? They won't read Japanese I am sure so I am guessing one with lots and lots of pictures... :)

Will I be able to get this at a combini or do I need to go to a specialist bookshop?

Thanks guys.

Reminder: JLPT July deadline is May 1st! [26 Apr 2009|12:18pm]

dokool
For anyone who wants to take advantage of the July edition of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, the deadline to apply is on May 1st! Totally slipped my mind and I figure some people might not know about the July test so I'd make a post here.

This isn't for all levels - July is just levels 1 and 2, while December will have all four levels. This will be the last year before they change the test format so consider it a final shot to get your certificate before you have to buy all new books ;-)

And now I gotta figure out where the damned applications are sold. Whee!

Meeting People! [21 Apr 2009|06:51am]

mafiosostory
Hello everyone.

I am Canadian and I just moved to Tokyo last week.

I was wondering where is a good place to go to meet other foreigners or English speaking Japanese?

I live in a shared house with 14 people, all of which are Japanese speakers... except for me, who has weak Japanese skills. I am looking to make friends outside of our house and hopefully with other English speakers.

Are there any events or places or any way of finding English speakers in this city??

Please help a lonely newbie..

Visiting Japan! [01 Apr 2009|09:16pm]

Who knows anything about Japan? I am going to Tokyo next month and need some info. I also need a phrase book? 2nd hand or borrowed would be best for $$ reasons.  Is the language barrier huge or can most Japense people speak a little english? I'll be there for 2 weeks - What do I just have to see/do?  Best way to do it on the cheap?

On another note - does anyone know about Assistance/Service Dogs in Japan ?  I use a Medical Alert Dog and the prospect of being without him for 2 weeks is scary - but I am not sure if taking him is practical.

Credit card / Online Banking [27 Mar 2009|03:55pm]

[ music | BoA - UNIVERSE feat. Crystal Kay & VERBAL (m-flo) ]

Hello,

I've been in Japan for over a year now and I think it's time for a credit card. Actually there were quite a few times where a credit card would have helped a lot, a JAPANESE credit card, that is.
I often use Amazon Japan or Yahoo Auctions Japan, so I'd prefer a credit card that will be accepted there.

Right now I only have a bank account at a local bank. Actually my Japanese coworkers told me they're not even sure if it can be called a bank.
Anyway, I think it might be better to get a bank account with one of the bigger banks, but only Mizuho has a branch here in my small city.
One other option that my Japanese coworkers recommended to me is that I get a bank account with the post office and then a credit card from a big department store or even a JR credit card and connect it to that bank account.

Furthermore it should be free / no monthly fees.

Any recommendations?

I'd also would love to have online banking, but I have no idea if it's common here in Japan at all.
I found this here: http://www.japannetbank.co.jp/
It is all in Japanese, though.
My Japanese is intermediate, but for banking issues I'd like to have a 100% understanding, of course.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Cobbler in Tokyo? [17 Mar 2009|10:31pm]

lilitufire
Hi,

I have a lovely pair of ponyskin 70's knee high boots that need resoling, as the soles are cracking. It's probably quite a big job, and I don't want to pay the earth (I can buy new vintage ones for 6000 yen or so, but these ones fit really well). Any recommendations for a mom and pop wee cobbler that might tackle this, somewhere in central Tokyo? Extra points for ones near Shibuya.

I know I have a Mr Minit near by at the station, but that isn't going to cut it, I think. It's a complete sole replacement.

Looking for 3 things in Tokyo [16 Mar 2009|02:52pm]

chochajin
[ music | Kuraki Mai - Kiss ]

I'll be in Tokyo again for a few days and have some questions for you guys. Hope you can help me.

I'll mainly be in Shibuya and maybe Ikebukuro (I won't have much time, though, that's why I'm asking here now). Are there any huge bookstores near the stations (or at least easy to find, e.g. Kinokuniya and the likes). I'm especially looking for bookstores with a huge selection of Japamese study material (because I live in an inaka where we only have REALLY small bookstores x_X).

Second thing I'm looking for: trousers. Trousers that might actually be LONG enough for my legs and still not too tight for someone who is not super thin, but not fat at all either. Any ideas?
(I'm not looking for jeans or something like that, but for trousers I can wear at work, like black or grey etc.)

Last thing I'm looking for: cat cafés. I just bought a good book (well actually it's a guide of cat cafés in Tokyo and Chiba). I was wondering if anyone has been to one in Tokyo that is easy to find and not so expensive. I just wanna try it out once (cat fanatic XD)

Thanks a lot in advance.

Moving costs and back problems [20 Feb 2009|07:30am]

chochajin
Hello,

I've been living in Japan for almost one year now. After 6 months I felt pain in my tailbone and knees for the first time.
I'm still under 30 and never had back problems before.
Lately it has gotten worse and worse.

For that whole year I was sitting on the floor, using a sofa/chair thingie similar to that one. I do have a bed, but there's no slatted frame. Instead there's a tatami mat thingie and I cover it with THREE futons, so that it's not too hard.

I think these 2 things are the reason for my current back and knee problems.
Furthermore I haven't done ANY sports since I came here (no time at all "thanks" to my current job).

At my job I have to sit on the floor abot 40-50% of the time, too (teaching on the floor).

I'm sure I'm not the only one with that kind of problem. Any tip for me and my back?

I'm thinking about buying a proper office chair (but of course they're expensive) and a mattress for my bed.
I wonder if just a mattress is enough or if I should get a proper bed with a lath floor?
This will all be super expensive and I might have to move soon, that's why I still haven't bought anything yet.

How expensive would it be to move that from A to B within Japan??

I once had a desk and bookshelf moved to my apartment. It was only 5 minutes by car, but they still charged me 5000Y for only 2 pieces of furniture!!
Anybody knows how much moving would cost, so that I can figure out what to do?

I really need to take care of my back problem ASAP.
Any help is highly appreciated!

Thanks so much in advance!

Personal Shopping Service. [17 Feb 2009|03:48am]

Hi, everyone! I just got back from my ten day trip to Japan, and I was just so overwhelmed and impressed by the country. I definitely want to go back, especially since there was a lot that I did not get to do as well as a lot of things that I did not buy while I was there.

Since my departure flight was at 2PM at Narita and stores open at 11AM on Sundays, then I could not safely make any last minute shopping trips. I mainly regret not buying a blazer from Beams and boots from New's, which are both in Harajuku. I also got hooked on Green Tea KitKats, so I'd like to buy those too.

I know that the items that I want are most likely still in stock in the stores, since I last saw them this past Thursday. Would anyone recommend a good personal shopping service in Japan? I know that there is Crescent, Rinkya and Shopping Mall Japan, but I believe that those are only online services. In addition, I'm curious if there are any people who are interested in picking up these items for me and shipping them in exchange for a service fee or, likewise, having me as a personal shopping service in Los Angeles, California?

NHK fees [29 Jan 2009|02:16am]

[ mood | annoyed ]

Hello,

I've been living in Japan and in the same apartment for almost a year now. During that time NHK fee collectors (or however you would call them) came and asked me if I had a TV.
My coworkers warned me beforehand, plus we have something similar in Germany, so I knew what to do.
I just pretended not to understand Japanese at all. Luckily their English was too bad, so all I said was "no TV, no TV" and then they left.
They do show up all 4 month or so and it's annoying. My first contact with them was TWO days after I moved in!!!!!!

When I came home yesterday I had this in my mailbox:

Do I have to react to that in any way or can I just throw it away and ignore it??

Thanks in advance :)

Warm Jackets For Winters in Kyoto and Tokyo. [25 Jan 2009|10:52pm]

[ music | CSS: "Jager Yoga" ]

Hi, everyone. I'm expected to fly into Tokyo on February 6th, which is still in winter. I'll be dressed in layers with a long-sleeve thermal shirt, hooded sweater, and jacket, which should be adequate for the mild winter weather in Tokyo. I also expect to travel to Kyoto, but I mainly wanted to do my winter shopping in Tokyo. Where exactly in Tokyo and its districts can I find a warm, reliable winter jacket or coat for the snow in Kyoto? My friends have recommended that I buy a warm coat at Uniqlo, but where else can I buy a coat? Also, I'm a guy, if that helps narrow down the possibilities.
