Promo Poster.
Since this hasn't been posted yet...

Considering the way the franchise has been handled recently, I guess it's safe to assume the new movie will be based far more strongly on the original comic books than previous efforts. Based on what little can be seen of Leonardo himself, the Turtles seem based visually on their initial appearances - small bodies, big hands/forearms, "sharper" facial features... The focus on that sharp, shining blade doesn't exactly make me foresee the guys playing football with cans of ooze or fighting off ninjas with a set of cymbals, either. I was sort of hoping they'd go all out and put all four Turtles in the red headbands, but I wasn't really expecting it. Looks good, though. Very good.

Daaaaaammmmnnnn. *shock*

I'd prefer color headbands actually. Easier to tell apart.

And truthfully it's likely based on the current animated series since they're using its logo.

Well, the first movie back in 1990 used the cartoon logo in the title sequence, and it wasn't based on the cartoon. It's just a branding thing, I think. They're using that logo for damn near every piece of mainstream marketing.

Eep! I stand fully corrected then, and happily so. Purely based off the comics would be lovely.

Well, I could be wrong too. I don't know enough about the project yet to know for sure. I'm just being hopeful.

Even if the movie is based on the new cartoon, though, it should still be a lot closer to the original comics than most of the previous movie series. So I'm excited either way.

I went back and re-read the Gamers Edge interview with the director. Sounds to me like the look and feel is going to be based firmly on the comics, but it's going to be set in the general continuity of the live action movies.

holy shit... this on had better not fall through like previous ones...

though i too would have appreciated the red bandanas across the board, hopefully this'll translate as well as sin city/spider did, and not turn out to be another crappy comic book movie

i'm sorry but that brought goosebumps to my arms. that is too awesome looking.

I think they could pull off the coloured bandanas and stay true to the comics, if they give meaning to the individual colours. I've always thought that the colour choices were very representative of their personalities. A little scene going into that could be a nice touch.

Then again, I ain't writing the thing. ;)

it's about damn time they did something based on the REAL turtles. I was so mad when the first cartoon came out and i saw how lame they had made them just for tv. Seeing kids running around talking about pizza and that other retardedness just bugged the hell out of me. The first movie was pretty good i suppose being a nice midway between the real turtles and the brain damaged cartoon version. Some day though i would like to see some sort of version based 100% on the original comics which would leave those kids raised on the cartoon going WTF?

Ouch. I'm sensing some hostility here. I love the comics, I love the original cartoon, and I love the movies. I'm not so much in love with the new show, but then again, I only watched one episode before I decided I wasn't into it...so I'll have to check it out.
I think the original cartoon was great. At the time it came out, there weren't really any "adult" cartoons...and a cartoon based on the comic book turtles wouldn't have been of much interest to kids...expecially since they hadn't been exposed to anime and other maturer cartoons. I thought it was an excellent choice at the time, and it was a smart move. Look how big they were! A darker, more mature cartoon probably would have failed at the time. Just my opinion.
As far as the upcoming movie...I can't wait for it to come out, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. I know CG is the "thing" now...but as a lover of film, and a film major, i must say that nothing compares to live action. I don't think this movie will compare to the original movies with live actors. CG looks like a video game...it ruined potentially good movies, like the Matrix sequels. As soon as you get a computer involved, the movie starts going downhill. :\
Just hope the movie proves me wrong! :D

Actually, there were a couple. Star Blazers comes to mind (edited version of Yamato). There was also that awful seriously butchered amalgam of three mecha anime shows, which I won't mention by name. It was a travesty, but it was mature none the less.

Otherwise, though, you're right. I don't think a darker cartoon would have gone over well with the parents, and the one we got certainly was a huge success. Personally, I consider the 80s-90s cartoon to be based on the toy franchise rather than the comics. The first wave of toys was a bit more designed for the comics fans, but the cartoon was there so that the kiddies (like me) would buy them too. The market for toys made especially for collectors hadn't really taken off yet, and getting kids and parents to buy the toys was the only way to make the line profitable. As much as I now prefer the original comics and the newer TV series, the show they made back then was exactly what they had to do.

Now that looks AWESOME. Thanks so much for posting this. I can't wait! o^__^o I hope the Turtles will still be enjoying this moderate popularity by the time it comes out.
