Tivo and Dish
Can anyone help me out? We got Dish Network today (have been using only network TV) and we had a totally incompetent installation tech. He could only get the Dish to work by bypassing the Tivo. When we tried to fix it tonight there were so many cables with the Dish box (more than one input and more than one output, as well as some kind of wireless - IR? - connection) that we didn't know where to start, and now we can't even get it to work by bypassing Tivo like he did.

You need to take the A/V out from the Dish receiver into the A/V in on the TiVo. Then use the TiVo IR blasters to control the receiver. See this thread for more info on setup for your specific box: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=128743

Got it. I don't think I have the TiVo IR blasters anymore. Where can I replace?

TiVo sells them: http://www.tivo.com/2.7.1.asp

You may be able to find IR blasters at stores like RadioShack too.

Whish DISH receiver do you have? I have two different TiVos (a Series2 and a Humax DVD recorder) hooked to two different DISH receivers (an aging standard receiver and a year-old HD receiver). If you got a DISH DVR, that complicates things.

The satellite cable coming in from the dish needs to go to the satellite input jack on the DISH receiver. It's coax, and looks a lot like the cable the cable company uses. They're not interchangeable. Use only the DISH cable to go from the dish to the receiver.

The audio and video outputs on the DISH receiver need to be connected to the audio and video inputs on the TiVo. If you have one, use an S-Video cable from the DISH output to the TiVo input. If not, an RCA connection will do. If you don't have the right cables on hand, your nearby RadioShack or Best Buy or even some drug stores these days will have AV cables. I suggest a triplet cable that carries video and left and right audio on three cords that are attached to each other. This keeps things tidy!

One set of audio and video outputs on the TiVo needs to be connected to an audio and video input on the television. Again, I suggest using an S-Video cable if you have one, and if your TV supports it. S-Video all the way from the satellite receiver to the TV gives you the best possible picture for a standard-definition TiVo.

The infrared (IR) "blaster" cable that came with the TiVo, which has a very thin cord, a plug that looks kinda like an iPod earphone plug, and two little L-shaped ends with mini bulbs that emit infrared signals, needs to be connected to the matching port on the back of the TiVo and then the emitters placed where they can control the DISH receiver. This is how the TiVo changes channels on the DISH receiver.

Now, you need to do a few things on your TiVo. You need to redo the Guided Setup that lets you specify that you have a new provider, satellite instead of cable. And you need to tell it that the video input is now either S-Video or composite, depending on which cables you're using.

I may be forgetting a step, but this should get you most of the way there! Good luck. :-)

Thank you so so much. How do I describe my dish receiver to you? It says "dp" "dish plus" on the left. It's designed for two TVs but we are only using it for one at the moment. The DVR is Tivo Series 2.

Wow, thank you so much, that was quite a bit easier than I expected and its working great!

You're welcome! Glad to hear it helped.

What they (other replies) say. I can confirm that Dish *will* work with TiVo, because that's what I have.

One thing I have found useful, even if it makes you feel silly to have to do it...label all of your cables :-)

Oh, that definitely doesn't make me feel silly - that's just smart!
