The login at the TinyTIM address tells it to you in a cuter factor, but here's the deal:
It wasn't a power supply. A hard drive took a nosedive and, while functional, is not functional enough to run the OS. I am going to Comic-Con for a few days and when I get back we will begin work on making a new TIM machine. We have all the data. There you go. Sorry for the bad news, just save up all your awesome plans for the big return.

When I was running TinyTIM, I used to go nuts on our line of admins (laz, Andy Rubin (now at Google!), Uconn John) when we had the slightest amount of downtime, begging, cajoling and demanding instant service to get our enormously important TinyTIM back up and running.
Oh, how roles switch and times change.
While doing a speaking engagement in New York City on the 18th, I got the word the machine went down. Unfortunately, I was not returning until Sunday, the 20th, so it had to wait until then. I checked the machine late late Sunday night after driving 200 miles home, and found that the machine was in a strange hung state. I power-cycled it, and the machine didn't come back up. As in, no power.
Therefore, I will have to replace the power supply. I have spares, but it's a huge pain in the ass to replace a power supply on one of these things so I need to do it tonight.
To me, the role of admin means I know of all this and that it's not so bad. To people used to TinyTIM's year-long uptimes with breaks only for upgrades, this is probably hell on earth. Rest assured, TIM is not "over", "deceased", or whatever else people are asking me in e-mails and the rest. It just needs its half-decade checkup.
My longer-term plan is to replace the machine TIM runs on, just because what it does is now shockingly untaxing and there are better systems that could be acquired and used. That'll happen at some point, but the short-term situation is simply a "power supply issue". Foof.

7:04 pm - The Unofficial Official TinyTIM Baby Pool
|

As some of you know, Geo and Momerath will be expecting their first child in late August. Nexus conversation has been bandied about ever since the announcement, and now things are being set into motion:
Announcing the First TinyTIM Baby Pool. Geo and Momerath's baby (we're pretty sure it's a) girl is due to enter the world on August 29, 2008. We're going to set a pool for the actual birthdate and time for $20 per person and we'll be doing this on a '50-50' basis. Half of the proceeds will be the prize pool for the winner. The other half will be given to Momerath for placement into the baby's college fund.
Rules:
1. One entry per person, and once the entry is made, it cannot be changed for any reason.
2. Entries can be made either in this thread (comments screened), or via email, and will be held if you're sending a check to cover your entry. As entries are gathered, they will be posted here periodically so that entries aren't repeated.
3. Money should be sent to me, either via Paypal or you can send a check. This shouldn't be a problem, but just in case... A returned check will void any entry into the pool and will disqualify you from participating. EDIT: I use a sneakemail address for Paypal to fight spam. Comment in here and I'll give you the correct address to send to.
4. Obviously, LJ Users are a subset of the players (past and present) of TIM, so feel free to spread the word around amongst TIMsters that don't use LJ.

Uh, TIM? You there? Or are you out doing the debauchery thing now that you're Barely Legal instead of Jailbait?
Or worse, did you run out and vote?

I will be in the Boston area1 later this week (starting Thursday afternoon), and if at all possible, I would like to see people for dinner.
Anyone want to recommend places and times and stuff?
Edit Edit:I think Friday night at Mary Chung's was decided. Kah, was it 5:30p or 6:30p?
Footnote 1: Actually the NJ area, but driving up to Boston is not a problem in the slightest. I think my sense of distance has gotten skewed by living in the midwest for so long. :)

53 looks up abashed. She has been caught in another attempt to throttle a mush-client because it wouldnt load and run.
You see, her house got the not so bad side of a lightening strike right about the end of last year. Not so bad cause all that died this time was a USB router and a switch. Unfortunately that was the gerry rig that kept Clone #2 talking to the net. *SIGH*
oh and the uniden phone base. This is the second base time this has happened. We bought a new base which came with 2 handsets. Presently we have 5 handsets. should we buy another set up from Fry's we'll have seven handsets. thats one for each major room and one for the garage and yard. lol.
So anyway.
I'm having no luck with finding a client that'll run. SimpleMu and Pueblo have both been crapping out on me in the installation phase for the first and trying to run the second one. I need a client. I am having withdrawal.
Got any suggestions?
No Linux isnt an option, shack.

yay.tim.org started taking scsi errors yesterday morning, to the point where the scsi bus was being automatically reset about every ten minutes. This happened in the middle of a database dump, which took the mush process down. I didn't find out until this afternoon about 4 TST (my bad. I just hadn't tried to log in for want of time at work.)
Rebooting did not fix the problem so I took the machine apart, cleaned it, reseated everything and moved the scsi controller to a different PCI slot. I also did a verification run on the disks and they passed without problem. At this point yay (and TIM) have been up and running for three hours with no sign of error, so while I may not have deterministically fixed the problem I've at least put it off a bit.

I heard about it on the radio in the press room of the printing company where I worked that morning. I was stunned and amazed that anything so devastating could happen, and it reminded me of the feeling I had when I heard my grandfather had passed. Disbelief... When I got to my second job I saw it on tv, but it was so far away that I couldn't feel the reality of it. It wasn't until I was online with my friends on a MUSH called TinyTIM that it all began to sink in. The wizards were shouting out information to the rest of us about how to contact loved ones, letting us know that other friends that we hadn't seen were okay, and it was generally just chaos. We may have been miles apart, but somehow we were instantly bonded by this one event.
