Description:A community for discussing Tin Man canon, fanon and fanfiction
About
This is a community for meta-discussion of all things Tin Man, but especially of fan fiction and fanon. Archetypes, literary and dramatic themes, tropes, world-building, character development, scripting, shipping—they're all fair game. We also welcome discussion about more traditional "meta" topics like fanthropology, fannish customs and conventions and fandom history and group dynamics.

You can ponder, theorize, expound, question and rant. You can wax eloquent or pedantic or prosaic. We want to hear your witty and erudite thoughts!

Community Guidelines

-The usual. Don't be shitty.

-No deleting comments. No, not even your own.

-Once a post has been commented on, only mods may delete it.

-No freezing threads or disabling comments. This is diametrically at odds with the raison d'etre of this community.

-No ads without modly sanction.

-Don't get ~¤*¤~creative~¤*¤~ with your formatting. It's annoying as hell.

-We want to read your forty page dissertation, but not on our flists. Put posts longer than a paragraph's worth behind a cut.

-Use tags liberally so that other community members can find and admire your scholarly musings!

A Word About "Character Bashing" and "Ship Bashing"

Censorship is not one of our favourite things.

In this community, members have free rein to express strong or unpopular opinions, so long as they do so in an adult way, as part of meaningful discussion. DG is a fictional individual. Her feelings don't get hurt when you say that she sucks, or that Cain would never be interested in a relationship with Glitch. However, people expressing these opinions should be mindful of how they phrase their statements. Saying "I don't think ship X is plausible," or "Character Y was badly rendered," is fine. Even saying "Ship X/character Y is Teh Suck!" is fine. Saying "People who ship X or like character Y are morons," is not fine. The mods will be able to tell the difference, even if you use big words.

Likewise, if you cannot see your favourite character shredded without bawling out the shredder, don't participate in those discussions. Not everyone shares the same interests, and some people express themselves in flippant ways. This doesn't mean they look down on you for your preferences. However, if you think a heated discussion is getting particularly personal or acrimonious, ping the mods*.

A Word About Fic Bashing

In our travels through fandom, we inevitably come across some fanfiction that we really dislike. Usually, we'll just hit the back button and move on. The badfic becomes a fleeting, unpleasant memory that troubles us not. Sometimes badfic makes you want to talk about Stuff You Don't Like and Why You Don't Like It, and that's when all sorts of happy fun stuff begins to happen. That's cool.

However.

If you have something interesting to share with us that cannot be translated from the specific to the general and cannot be conveyed without saying something snotty about specific fics (and by extension, specific writers), it's probably not as interesting as you think. Negative commentary on fanfiction trends and tropes is relevant to our interests. Punishing that one plebish fanbrat on your friendsfriends list for the high crime and misdemeanour of having bad taste, poor writing skills, an unrealistic estimation of hir own abilities or an outsized sense of entitlement is not. If you like that sort of thing there are other places you can go.
