Challenge #8, 'shallow'
Title: Pearl Unconquerable Characters: Pearl Took, Pervinca Took Rating: G Note: I'm fascinated by the obscure story of Pippin's sister Pearl apparently pushing an incapacitated Thain down the stairs so another hobbit could inherit the position, and so she'd get her reward of pearls. A little out of the sphere of interest for most LotR fans, but...

For Challenge 13.
Title: Sparring Characters: Gimli, Legolas Rating: G
"An axe will smash through bow, knife or sword," boasted Gimli, seating himself on a mossy treestump.
Legolas didn’t smile, but looked up from unwrapping his sharpening stone. "Only if you’re fighting someone foolish enough to place it where it can be smashed."
"And armour, you know,” the Dwarf continued, unperturbed. “Helmets!"
"Wood."
The leaves shivered; Fangorn Forest seemed to bristle like a beast.
"I wish you wouldn’t do that," Gimli grumbled. And now the Elf did smile, so Gimli threw lembas wrappings at him, but the smile only turned into a grin.
It proved impossible not to grin back.

For Challenge 10, and the word 'bitter'.
Title: Over the Wedding Feast Characters/pairing: Eowyn, Aragorn/Arwen, Eomer Rating: G Note: I don’t know if the saying “bitter, said the fox about the rowanberries” is known anywhere in the English-speaking world, but I’ve transplanted it into Middle-Earth anyway.
She is beautiful beyond mere grace and appearance, Eowyn thought, as she rolled a cherry between her fingers absent-mindedly. It might be somethng specific about Elves – the physical form becoming awash with inner grandeur. And Arwen was happy, now – filled to the brim with the glory of love’s highest joy. It appeared as if she might light the king’s hall on her own even with the tall windows boarded.
“He does look rather scruffy next to her,” she mused.
“Bitter, said the fox,” said Eomer, laughing.
“Hush, you.” She kicked his ankle under the table, but couldn’t stop a smile.

Title: A Memory Characters: Frodo, Elanor, Sam, Rosie Rating: G
“Oh, give up on that door and come sit with us.”
Sam pushed the bolt in and began to tighten it. “Soon enough, Rosie-wife. I’m almost done.”
“No, dear one. That burns.” Frodo pulled plump baby fingers away from the candle. Elanor squirmed a little, so he set her on the carpet. She immediately started wriggling towards her father at the kitchen door.
“It’s nightfall already,” said Rosie, laughing even as she tried to look stern.
When Elanor was all of four, she would dream of a flicker of light, and hands she didn’t recognise, pulling hers from the fire.

For Challenge 12.
Title: Soft and Cool Characters/Pairing: Sam/Frodo Rating: PG?
It's there, the wound, in the soft area between Frodo's shoulder and heart, cool against Sam's cheek at night. It’s almost too simple, feels much too ordinary after a while, for the memory it carries: just a cool spot, like a part of Frodo's skin turned to soft metal.
Sam tries to kiss it, sometimes, to warm it, but metal doesn't answer to kisses. And Frodo will shift, and there will be that look on his face, quiet and resolute - slipping away. So Sam will kiss his lips, instead, to bring him back; and there, at last, is warmth.
