Another review
And so, after a week, I've had a decent amount of time to be a sponge to the water of "The Projectionist" maxi-single.
Track by track, briefly:
1) "The Projectionist" (single version) ~ I like to call this the "stadium rock" version. *grins* By far, my favorite moments are the word-play in the line "who's in whose skin"--Say it five times fast; that little "k" is a gem--and Jeremy's quotation of The Cure's "A Strange Day." Mmmmm. It took me a moment to divorce the snippet from its new home in this song, which is a good thing.
2) "Out of the Cave" ~ I liked most of the production, and the fact that it strays from the usual, but I really wish that the vocals would have been a bit more apparent. Despite that fact, they even used the same drippy water sample that I am using in another song, but looped it in a different way. Grrrr. (I'd recognize it anywhere. That either means that I have good taste, or that TSN is totally ripping me off. And yes, I'm kidding about that part. ;p )
3) "Inside of You, In Spite of You" (Ti Bon Ange mix) ~ This is great. I loved the original, but here, it is reinvented. Showcasing a well-crafted change in harmony from the previous version, it is simplistic, but sure of itself.
4) "The Projectionist" (Silent Film mix) ~ ...also very strong. I like the extension of the ending, and say "m-m-microtonality." This is the one that is still stuck in my head when I wake up in the morning.
5) "Something Dire" (live version) ~ I am not usually keen on live tracks, but it is still a nice addition to the disc. It manages to convey some of the energy and spontaneity of live vocals/synth/guitar/percussion: things that change often and that we are unlikely to hear from the polished production on a full album. M-m-musicianship...(are you growing weary of me, yet?)
6) "Walk Away" (Needlehole mix) ~ It's hard to put my finger on it, but I actually prefer this version to the demo on the website.
7) "The Projectionist" (Powerlines mix) Though still lovely, and a great variation in form and texture from the other versions on this EP, the percussion gets a bit relentless after a while. In that respect, it shows fewer considerations for the inherent form of the song than the others. At the same time, this disjunction is almost appropriate. I love, love, love the dissolution at the end...purely electric.
Of course, I want what any proper female wants: a too-cool eighth grade dance, a high-school dedication on the radio...but let's get it straight, I am an "admirer" and NOT a "groupie." Heh.
