So, one of the things that Mark Thomas talked about last night was the idea of a maximum wage. Not as a set figure, but as a multiple of national average wage (he suggested ten times). This would mean that any earnings above ten times the national average wage (and obviously we'd have to choose mean or median or mode, and everyone's wage would have to be public to work out the accuracy) would be taxed at 100%, and if any plutocrat wanted to have a bigger wage they would first have to pay their workers more, so that the average wage went up.

I LIKE this idea.

And now, a poll inspired by Jo Crispy-Strips:

Am having an argument with someone in Another Place about which is worse: smoking or eating at McDonald's. My contention (having seen Supersize Me) is that McD's is worse, because it does similar amounts of harm to the individual, and much worse harm to wider society. His contention is that he doesn't care about wider society, and smoking is worse for the individual. What do YOU guys think?

Sunder on LC has spotted an interesting definition of Britishness being employed by the Daily Fail: you're only British if not only you, but your parents and grandparents were born here. This means that Winston Churchill (mother American) was not British, and nor are many of the royal family (because of Phil the Greek). Employing the Fail's definition, then, which of these options best applies to you?

  1. Does anyone localish fancy dogsitting while we are at Spring Conference? This would be from the morning of the 6th of March to the evening of the 8th of March. We actually arranged a dogsitter for Conference well before Christmas, but due to a shotgun wedding in (I think) Suffolk it's all gone horribly awry. I reserve the right to reject volunteers out of hand, but the fact of volunteering will be much appreciated. Volunteer Obtained!

  2. Does anyone else here feel sick to their stomachs about this? Because there seems to be a BIT of fuss being made, but not much. Our government is complicit in torture, people. TORTURE. Why are we not throwing these bastards out on their ears? I just don't get it.

  3. Does anyone have a gateau from a chateau? Because, given the way the wax has run when it has dribbled, we now have a candle with a handle, and I can do a passable impression of the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies by Van Klomp...
In other news, Mitch Benn has been musing about the age of Radio Four listeners. I think it's possible that the average age of radio four listeners is 55, but that the standard deviation is very big indeed. But still, straw poll is strawy:

Secondly, people often ask me why I read and like The Metro. Politically, after all, it's almost as objectionable as The Fail. The crucial difference between the Metro and the Fail? No, not the cover price. The Metro has a sense of humour. Well, you note down the poll number at the top of the poll, and then you post an entry in which you type, somewhere (for example) <lj-poll-1331922>

This would get you the following result:

Today's netcast is up (fashionably late) and many of you will find yourselves linked in it. [info]ginasketch has some more original art for sale. Malady of the weekend appears to be random nosebleeds. Lego Batman Wii game horribly addictive. Small Person has fanvids on YouTube. Quote of the week goes to Andrew Hickey:
if you look at Doctor Who fans between the ages of (roughly) 30 and 60 you’ll find that an astonishingly high proportion of them are gay (or in some way of an alternative sexuality), members of the Liberal Democrats, middle class, very interested in computers, readers of 2000AD, or all of the above.
I resemble that remark... Oh, and today's APOD is GORGEOUS. All I could think when looking at it was Saturn is my favourite planet, mummy! It has thousands of rings and LOADS of moons!, which is what Small Person always says whenever Saturn is mentioned in any context.

And... yeah. Haven't been posting as much as usual, have I? Life is pretty busy right now, that's fer sure. And there hasn't been anything that I have felt moved to post about which hasn't been posted about by better folks than me many times over. So, in lieu of more substantive content, and since I haven't written fic for ages, here is a meme, via [info]netgirl_y2k:
The One Sentence Fic Meme!

Pick a fandom, and try to write different categories of fic (angst, fluff, UST, etc) in one sentence.

Having brandy butter on Vince Mince pies which already contain both brandy and butter makes no sense to me - why not just have a bigger pie? - and the sharp saltyness of Wensleydale cuts through the richness of a mince pie perfectly. But Helen seems to think I am weird for having mine like that, which was somewhat unexpected. I suspect it springs from daddy being a chef, so I may have picked up interesting food ideas - for example, I know people who think I am weird for having black pepper on my strawberries - so I wondered just exactly how weird I am?

Vote away, brave f-list, and tell me!

OK, I have done the netcast again today. I have started to feel like I am treading over a lot of the same ground, and would like to broaden my reading list - 200 or so blogs is not a lot to pick from when you're looking for the best of the Liberal blogosphere. This is where YOU come in. If you are reading this post please comment with ONE blog that you think I should add to [info]lcreadinglist, and tell me why. Preferably one that's not already on there, but, you know, I'd be too lazy to go and check, so I won't be cross if you don't either.

(note to non-LJ folks, click here. LJ-based blogs that I am reading are under friends/feeds; non-LJ are under feeds)

I am planning today to actually post one of the Posts I Have Been Promising For Ages. There's the Nich Starling one, which has mainly been procrastinated because I can't find an electronic copy of his article in The Total Bollocks Guide to Bloggers Who Have Sucked Up To That Tory Blogger, and I can't be arsed typing in quotes; or SB's Guide to Pub Etiquette, which has mainly been put off because it's huge and rambling and full of ranting... How about you help me to decide which one to post?

The former is narrowly focussed, and will probably only be of interest to a few people, but will be less stressful to write; the latter will be a ginormous spleen-vent, and will probably be more socially useful, but will be a lot harder work. Make your choice!

Which is funnier?

Penises

Farting

I think there is a certain reluctance among the male of the species to admit that cocks are inherently amusing in a way that vaginas aren't. Vaginas don't try to escape from your underwear and have a look about to see what's going on. Penises, on the other hand, love to jump out at every opportunity. Yet, when one does this in front of you and you (quite naturally) burst into giggles, one tends to be greeted with (in a baffled, slightly hurt tone) words like:
Why are you laughing at my penis? You don't normally laugh at my penis!
I suspect that the truthful answer (I was imagining it squeaking Freeeee! Free at last! and running away down the skirting board) would have killed the mood even more than my giggles already had the last time this occurred... But yes, cocks, definitely funnier than farting IMHO.

[info]pmoodie, as the f-list's resident Shat Apologist, would you like to explain to me what is psychotic about not inviting someone you hardly know to your wedding? And that's if you even believe the Shat's side of the story. George says he DID invite him and never got a reply...

James Graham has further comments.

And speaking of the lovely Mr Graham, If you, like me, enjoy perving over James Graham's sexy voice watching exciting debates between bloggers about the minutiae of politics, click here. James has posted the video of himself on the telleh last night, and it DOES feature some interesting (but not entirely surprising) YouGov poll results. I'm still amazed that anyone, even George Osbourne, thinks that George Osbourne would make a competent chancellor, but...

Shock Horror No! Surely they haven't been making stuff up? Not at that bastion of journalistic integrity, The Sun? I am SHOCKED!!

I know I have said before that there's no such thing as a must-read blog, but if there were such a thing then Costigan Quist's Himmelgarten Cafe would certainly be in the running for the title. Here, he talks about the current bout of Lib Dem infighting. Why can't we all just get along?
