Mat and I were walking with the doggies to pick the small person up from her dad's when we heard SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECRUMP. There was one of those moments of synchronicity that we have: we turned to each other and each tried to pass the other the lead we were holding, then we shrugged and took the doggies, and ran to help.
We were first on the scene, so I got my phone out and dialled 999. There was a very nice scottish gentleman who asked me which service, and then I got passed to a lady at Wakefield. I was still describing to her what was happening when the police got there, which was very impressive. There were two cars, one either side of the road, and the driver of the one that appeared undamaged was helping the driver of the one that had demolished the electricity sub station that
Dougie Blackhall crashed into a while back out of her car. The police lady went to help the drivers and the policeman approached us to find out what we had witnessed.
When we explained to the policeman that we hadn't seen what happened, only heard, he let us go, and we went and picked Small Person up. Five minutes later we were walking back and the ambulance had arrived for the driver of the second car. I spoke to the policeman again and he said she was going to be OK, she was just shaken up.
All in all, I'm very impressed with the speed and professionalism of the emergency services. Also quite impressed with the way the crumple zones on the car had worked to protect the driver.
Also also, quite proud of Mister Mat, whose first instinct was not to run away, or to gawp, but to help.
