There's good news and bad news, and news which could be either...
Good news: GRATS GEORGE!!! Nobody deserves a beautiful wedding more than you, mate.

Bad News: OFFS you have GOT to be JOKING?! Have they learnt nothing whatsoever from all the recent data fiascos? Clearly not. Then again, maybe it's a late April Fool... Or maybe they announced this today in the hopes that it would be burying in all the noise about abortion...

Could be either: Moffat is taking over from Rusty on Who. On the one hand, Moffat has written all of the best episodes of new Who, so even if he takes the show in a bad direction, at least it will be a better-written bad direction... But on the other hand, we don't know what that direction will be. Still, at least we can comfort ourselves with the hope that it's unlikely to involve bloody Billie Piper. We can has TEAM Tardis, and not just DUO Tardis, Oh Grand Moff? Pretty please with a cherry on top?

LOL I'm doing a "Thank God Rusty is going...but" thing at the moment.

I mean - I loved Blink etc...but I HATED Girl in the Fireplace. So if he goes the fear route and not so much the "lurve" route then I'll be happy.

LOL!

I'm getting old. Took me about five minutes to work out what you said...lol

Yes, the internet is wonderful for making me feel old! All those young whipper-snappers!!
shishmish: DW - Moffat FTW![info]shishmish on May 20th, 2008 05:15 pm (UTC)
Word - less lurve more 'omg, this is awesome' ♥

If we can get a series worth of episodes like Blink and The Empty Child (he did write that, didn't he?) then I'll be damn happy. We've had two-three series worth of lurve (yawn) and need sci-fi back, damnit!
meegat: ben with gun[info]meegat on May 20th, 2008 05:18 pm (UTC)
Yes! Having the sci-fi back would be good.

And plots that hang together - not RTD ones that usually have holes big enough to drive a truck through...

This is what I meant by even if he takes the show in a bad direction, at least it will be a better-written bad direction

I am worried that Who will become even more misogynistic under the direction of this whinging male privilege apologist, but we shall see...

more misogynistic under the direction of this whinging male privilege apologist

I've so missed something, haven't I? A lot of people have been saying things a long these lines...

I have a tendency to "tar them all with the same brush". Sort of thinking that if he's been involved with the show all this time...then what NEW direction can it go in?
shishmish: DW - Chap with Wings...[info]shishmish on May 20th, 2008 05:21 pm (UTC)
I couldn't agree more :D

Put it this way - I missed Saturday's episode due to a mates 21st party and you know what? I'm not entirely bothered about watching it o_O I just don't feel excited enough by it, which makes me sad as its a show I've loved since my dad introduced me to it when I was seven.
meegat: miabee023 Ben Icon[info]meegat on May 20th, 2008 05:26 pm (UTC)
LOL I enjoyed Saturday's. Thank God. I really didn't rate the Sontaran one at all.
SB[info]miss_s_b on May 20th, 2008 05:27 pm (UTC)
I have felt a breezy freedom about not watching any of the current run. Mat tells me I haven't really missed any sparkling brilliance.
shishmish: DW - Ten/Sarah[info]shishmish on May 20th, 2008 05:34 pm (UTC)
He's right, you haven't missed. There's been the 'Spot the Rose reference' which in some episodes has been so damn obvious *rolls eyes* and the old old joke of the Doctor & Donna being mistaken as a married couple *facepalm*

So I'm grasping onto any and every bit of hope Moffat will steer away from this - but, that link with the quotes? Shook me hard and threw be back down to Earth from my high with a huge bang. Damnit - he does good writing yet sounds like a complete and utter jerk. Where the fuck he got this idea from: There’s a huge, unfortunate lack of respect for anything male. is beyond me - hello? What parallel universe did you come from? Its more like lack of respect for anything female you moron.

*cries*

And I'm back to my sad, bored existence D:

I always find it's best not to get your hopes up too high in any case - there's always the chance we'll be pleasantly surprised.
shishmish: DW - Chap with Wings...[info]shishmish on May 20th, 2008 05:48 pm (UTC)
True, very true. I had my hopes up for the return and, well, you can guess how badly they were dashed.
Andrew Ducker[info]andrewducker on May 20th, 2008 05:35 pm (UTC)
One good episode so far (the last one) and a whole bunch of mediocrity.
SB[info]miss_s_b on May 20th, 2008 05:38 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Mat just said the last one was one he wouldn't mind watching again, and others seem to concur with him... I'd like to watch it to see if the criticisms I've heard are valid too.

I didnt like TGITF but I hope teh Moff can do as well with this as he did with Jekyll.
Paul Alexander Mudie: dalek tor[info]pmoodie on May 20th, 2008 05:23 pm (UTC)
I would expect Moffat to take the show in a grittier, scarier direction, which I would have no complaints with. The sexism is a worry though.
Olsen Bloom[info]andrewhickey on May 20th, 2008 08:03 pm (UTC)
Moffat appears to be an odious little man who wants to distance himself from all 'those other' Doctor Who fans, as well as being sexist and having a hugely over-inflated opinion of himself. He seems to be the worst kind of fanboy - the kind that wrecked comics, because they wanted them to be 'adult' because they didn't have confidence in their own tastes and were scared of being laughed at, and didn't really know what 'adult' meant so they accepted violence and darkness as being the same thing.

There's an attitude that seems to be prevalent among a lot of the nuwho writers... they're like the nerdy kid at school who was just a *little* bit less nerdy than the other ones, so he'd hang around desperately trying to get the approval of the bullies by bullying the others. Moffat's comments about 'asexual fanboys' and so on seem to fit into this tendency, as does his mild misogyny.

The new show also seems to have an actual aversion to the idea of learning or knowledge, which I think comes from the same place ("what you gonna do? Hit him with your A-levels?")

He's also not *that* good a writer - Blink was the only one of his episodes to have anything like an actual *idea* in it, with the rest of them being the usual nuwho collections of action setpieces and pisspoor attempts at 'witty' and 'edgy' dialogue strung together by something that could almost pass as a plot if you don't look too closely.
What he does have though is a sense of television as an artform in itself (as opposed to wannabe action movies) and an ability to construct a script to play to the medium's strengths.

So I think what we'll have is a show that's just as unpleasant and distasteful as the current series, but without the shininess and gurning. I suspect we'll end up with a lot of 'dark' adolescent stories like Ghostlight or Fenric, but with a much less Doctorish Doctor and a higher budget...
SB: Moods - Scared[info]miss_s_b on May 20th, 2008 08:16 pm (UTC)
Oh God... You're normally so right, but I'm really hoping you're not about this.
Olsen Bloom: Dr Who[info]andrewhickey on May 20th, 2008 08:30 pm (UTC)
When have I ever been right?

I *hope* I'm wrong, and like I say at least he *is* competent, but...

One thing I remember him saying in an interview is that Robert Holmes was 'not even a *good* hack', because a good hack would have known that the BBC couldn't do a giant rat, and so 14-year-old Moffat had to make excuses to his schoolfriends. He clearly still, decades later, resented this embarassment, and said it would have been far better to work within the limitations that were there rather than push them and fail.

To me, the idea that you should just accept limitations and never try anything difficult is so far from the ethos that Doctor Who should have that I can't comprehend what Moffat sees in the show in the first place...
SB[info]miss_s_b on May 20th, 2008 08:41 pm (UTC)
Oh God, really? But Robert Holmes was... Oh Lordy, you're depressing me now.

I agree with your last paragraph like whoa.

He's very good at depressing me too when he's as ill and sleep-deprived as he has been lately. :) Here's hoping it's just that making him so grumpy about this just now.
Olsen Bloom[info]andrewhickey on May 20th, 2008 10:40 pm (UTC)
No, it's not that. Remember, Moffat wrote The Girl In The Fireplace. I do not think I need to expand further...

Oh god. As soon as I started reading references to this I said, "So are you going to start watching Doctor Who again and he immediately said "Read the comments!"

And I said, "Hey, you don't even know where I read it!" and he said "Read theyorkshergob!" and I said "No, just tell me. I will not consult the internet to find out what my husband thinks about something when he's RIGHT THERE!"

He said, "No, read it, there's discussion!" I said, "Well, I'm definitely not going to read it then!" (I'm just not well-versed enough in Who for the discussions to make much sense to me; nothing against discussion generally, which is in fact one of my favorite things.)

And then he said, "But she said 'you're normally so right.' " And I said, "What?" and he said "She said I'm right!" and I said "oh god."

He's declared himself "so right" and "right about everything!" at least three times since (on such diverse subjects as whether cricket is better than baseball just because you score more runs in cricket, to whether it is really wise to look for a picture of W.G. Grace when you're so tired you should really be sleeping).

Yes, I suppose laughter is not good when you have the coughing-sick kind of ill; sorry.

Just thought you should know what you've done to the domestic equilibrium around here.

Andrew, since I know you're reading this, GO TO BED! For all our sakes. :)

This has amused me. Just thought you'd want to know.

Also? We've been known to tell each other stuff by comment or event invitation. When we're lying next to each other in bed.

Laptops might not be good for our sanity.

I thought it might appeal to you two, which is why I told you the story.

I realize that this whole "refusing to communicate via the internet with people I'm in the same room as/have an intimate relationship with" makes me hopelessly old-fashioned, yes. My first year at uni, when everybody I knew was by definition people who lived across the hall from me, we still used to invite each other to lunch via this newfangled Instant Messenger we had just discovered... I thought that was weird too.
