For Pity's Sake, London Lib Dems!!!
Look at this table here. It's a breakdown from the latest YouGov poll:

What the hell are you guys playing at? Nearly seventy percent of people who self identify as Lib Dem are going to put Not-Brian as their first preference. If you can't even get the message about the voting system out to your own supporters, then what's the fucking point??? You've got three days. Three days, or it's very likely Boris is going to win. Do you actually WANT that on your consciences? It's no good blaming the media for this one. For fuck's sake.

And don't get me started on the bloody Focus leaflet you expect me to deliver that's riddled with typos and has some sentences that don't even make SENSE in it. Christ on a bike, anyone would think we WANT to put people off.

Note to party: if you want people to take you seriously, being able to find your own arses with both hands might help.

* deep breath *

Still, it's not just Lib Dems that are stupid. I wonder if this girl knows about the BNP's policy of "voluntary" repatriation for anyone who wasn't born in this country before 1948, or descended from pure blood stock of such people? I mean, it's in the party's constitution...

In other news, Mat is filling in a YouGov survey right now, and is complaining that there's only one box to tick next to Harriet Harman in the politicians you generally feel negative about list...

Also: ROXXOR! Does this mean my dad is George Takei?

LOL Be glad...be VERY glad that I don't live in London.

I'd prefer almost any of those candidates over Ken Livingstone. I can't stand the lying self-righteous little toad.

So - if it meant disappointing a whole host of ancestors and voting Tory...so be it.

Bleh. I can sort of understand voting Boris, although he couldn't run a bath, let alone a major city's infrastructure. I just wouldn't do it myself.

Mat is filling in a YouGov survey right now,

How come he has one and I've been marooned on £47.60 for the past month?

I accidentally started doing a Brand Index, which I normally skip.

I think it was the NF who put leaflets through the door last election, proclaiming proudly their intended policy of "assisted repatriation" (forced deportation). Nutters.

Re: Boris, oh look, London's fucked. Oh well. Maybe this'll be enough to stop people voting Tory when the big one comes around.

I would be one of those. Paddick is an illiberal pompous ass who has been in the party 5 minutes; I don't care if he wears the party ticket, this is one donkey I'm not backing. I'm voting Boris to get the corrupt, arrogant pork-barrelling liar out.

... because Boris will be better?

* shrug *

I suppose that's fair enough.

Why do you say it’s because people don’t understand the voting system?

I think it’s primarily because the Labour and Tory candidates are both very high profile — they’re known by their first names! — and the Lib Dem candidate isn’t.

Re: London Lib Dem supporters
Because people are primarily voting to kick Ken out or to barricade the doors against Boris (see our anonymous friend above), and psephologically speaking, the best way to do both of those things is to put anyone other than those two for the first preference, and then the one you least hate for the second preference.

Why do you say it’s because people don’t understand the voting system?

Because feedback from people I've been in contact with canvassing say it's a very frequent response, people are voting for Boris to get Ken out and Ken to keep Boris out, but giving Brian 2nd pref or similar (because that's what it's for, right?).

I'll be looking at the vote split carefully between list Lib Dem and Paddick 1st pref, that could be very telling. That "two horse race" rhetoric has got to most people, and its not in the media or the other two candidates advantage to explain the system better.

We don't have enough activists to know on every door in the capitol and explain how the system works, and the media has effectively failed to explain it effectively. Sure, some of it is profile, but a lot more of it is "no chance, back the winner" reaction that's more suited to FPTP elections.

Re: London Lib Dem supporters
There's also anecdotal evidence that some activists from other parties are deliberately trying to mislead. We've had Labour canvassers telling people that a vote for Brian will let Boris in.
Sadly, with your literature you want to give people reasons to vote for you, not explain the voting system. Most people would not read a leaflet about that!
Still, we're working hard to get more LDs on the Assembly regardless of how well Brian does.

I would see nothing wrong with backing one party for the assembly and another's candidate for Mayor, nor identifying oneself sympathetic to one political party (or indeed holding party membership) but voting for another party/candidate in an election.

For instance, though not London, I will vote Green tomorrow because I think the candidate would make a good councilor and because I disagree with a number of things that the Conservative run council have done in recent years.
