So This is Why I Don't Watch Sky News...
It's a crazy mixed-up world we're living in when Mitch Benn is the feminist railing against the patriarchalist stereotyping of a female Sky News Reporter. If a bloke had asked the partner of Steve Wright if she thought that if you'd had a better sex life he wouldn't have done this? then there would (quite rightly) have been howls of outrage. The fact that it was a woman who posited that if his partner had maybe shagged him a bit more often then he wouldn't have felt the need to murder five prostitutes makes it worse, not better

I've lost count of the times I have objected to this infantilisation of men - that they can't be held responsible for their own actions; it's all the fault of their mother/lover/grandma/female school teacher/murder victim/whatever - on feminist grounds, but surely it's wrong from a male point of view as well? Don't men want to be grown ups? Do they actually want to be mothered and smothered into irrelevancy?

I just don't get it.

Jesus. Christ. On. A. Bike.

"...if you'd had a better sex life he wouldn't have done this?"
Or alternatively, maybe they didn't have much of a sex life because he was away getting his jollies with prostitutes all the time. But of course, that doesn't make for the dramatic soundbite, does it?

A lot of men never seem to move past 17 years of age, but at least they have some idea of what it is to stand on their own two feet. But there are a small number of men who never dropped a pair and want to blame everything on someone else (usually a female someone else) because they're incapable of taking responsibility for their own actions and do actively want to be mothered for the rest of their lives. Whether it's laziness, sheer selfishess or a genuine mental problem I just don't know.

Yes, it's wrong from any point of view.

People have to be held accountable for their actions. I'm sure there are plenty of men who don't get regular sex who don't become mass murderers as a result.

The reporter in question should be fired, or severely reprimended at least, for asking such a stupid bloody question.

Don't men want to be grown ups?

No, why the hell would we?

Do they actually want to be mothered and smothered into irrelevancy?

No, that's also bad. The irrelevancy thing is a modern phenomenon that's not going away either, because men truly are irrelevant now (if not actively unsuitable). All their aggressive natural instincts are anti-social and negative, and their technical geeky side is ridiculed/unattractive.

We could say that the generally lessened ability to multi-task means we're better at focusing on a single goal undistractedly, but that also means "geek" apparently.

"If he'd had more sex he wouldn't have become a murderer" is so crazy and blind that it doesn't merit a response.

There are plenty of men who grow up and hold themselves accountable for their actions (including actively choosing to pursue as much childish fun as possible) and plenty of women who never move on from the pointless social bickering and power games they used as a shield in their teenage years.

I object to the infantilisation of men, but I object more strongly to the absolute permission women have to degrade, harass and sexually belittle men on a scale that would be literally illegal the other way around.

Funnily enough, this ISN'T one of my pet hates. I didn't mean to write much on it, maybe I need to resolve some issues!

I think I object quite strongly to men killing prostitutes.

I object to people thinking this is something men can be driven to, and that this murderer's motivation was that he was a frustrated man.

...As opposed to being a psycho.

There are valid psychological reasons why people eventually commit violent crimes which probably do stem from their relationships with other people.

But plenty of people have similar upbringings, don't become murderers, and realise that perhaps the events that caused them to have feelings of a lesser nature were unfortunate, but that its time to grow up, get over it and seek psychological help if necessary.

But that question? Ugh. Reason 4,980,987 I will not sign up to Sky. Ever.
