The End of Christmas
Today being thirteenth night (what? We run on Goth Time!) we took the tree down tonight. This was facilitated somewhat by the arrival of the Christmas present from Claire in York (well done Royal Mail, did you bring it by Oxcart?), which was a copy of We Wish You a Metal Christmas. Obviously this was the perfect soundtrack for taking down the tree, and Small Person approved particularly of Alice Cooper's version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town and the very noisy Deck the Halls. Mat and I were more amused by - You may say there's no such thing as Santa, but as for me and Grandpaw, we believe - and there was much giggling and a bit of headbanging while we dismantled the tree.

We now have (whisper it, for it will not last) a mostly tidy living room. The TV has a motley population of ne'er do wells on top of it, including Pratchett!Death, a Sea Devil, a Zygon, and Boris Karloff; the shelves are full of Doctor Who DVDs; and my lava lamp which I got for my 18th from cousin Jude is flowing nicely. I am sitting on the sofa to type this, and I feel like we have accomplished something together, as a family.

It's little moments like this that make life worth living.

(for those of you wondering, I managed to cadge a lift home from work, and thus didn't even have to pay for a taxi! Thanks Sammi!)

Wasn't today the fourteenth?

It was. Twelfth Night runs Jan 5-Jan 6 (overnight; ends at dawn) and thus trees etc. should have come down on Monday night.

I think you should have this argument with my mum.

The only way that would work is if 25 Dec is not a Day/Night of Christmas. Which is illogical nonsense, and you can tell your mum that from my mum. :D

I'm willing to have the argument with your mum! The first night is December 25th, so:

1. 25/12
2. 26/12
3. 27/12
4. 28/12
5. 29/12
6. 30/12
7. 31/12
8. 1/1
9. 2/1
10. 3/1
11. 4/1
12. 5/1

The 6th is only the 12th night if Boxing day is the first, which it isn't.

Thank you, that saved me typing it out too. :D

Also: Advent ends on Dec 24th. Christmas runs Dec 25th-Jan 5th. Jan 6th is the Feast of Epiphany (i.e. start of Epiphany season), and you cannot have Christmas and Epiphany happening simultaneously, the same way you can't have February and March overlapping. Church seasons don't work that way.

- wait, why is the empty space between Ash Wednesday and Lent? Isn't the one the first night of the other?

Oooh, curious. Yes, I'd have thought so too (and double-checking, yes, Lent starts on Feb 25th i.e. Ash Wednesday). The list was c&p'd from a decent source but obviously not proofread properly! (It last started on 1 March in 2006.)

I think, and I am guessing here, that EITHER she thinks it works like floors of a building - ground floor, first floor - and therefore boxing day is the first night OR she thinks you take the tree down AFTER twelfth night.

I'd ask, but she's in Fuerteventura.

Oh well! I'm sure it hardly matters. I don't do tradition, just whatever's cool.

I always thought January the was the night of epiphany and you should take down your tree either on that day or before. I am with you on this one!

Oxcart? The postman could have walked from York to your bit of Yorkshire in that time!!!

Our tree is still up :-P We're rebellious like that. It'll have to wait until tomorrow or Saturday.

The world hasn't ended yet because we have Broken The Rules and I'm sure it won't anytime soon!

Your figures soound like FUN! I need to get me a Pratchett!Death and a Zygon.
