Sexism is Alive and Well in Advertising
I really really hope that this is not a genuine Guinness advert:

(hat tip [info]andrewducker)

... because, while it's all very clever and "post ironic" to use images from porn films in advertising, equating a woman with a product which is designed to be consumed, used, and then thrown away is beyond objectification, and frankly makes me steaming furious. Perhaps I would have had more of a sense of humour about this had I not just read James Grieves' supremely patronising and patriarchalist article on on Scribo Ergo Sum. I don't think I have felt a virtual headpat so strong as in his last paragraph in a very long time. Yes, you're right, girls SHOULD be allowed to masturbate. But they shouldn't be allowed to be mean to men, and there is absolutely no difference between the rank exploitation of women that goes on in illegal brothels and unregulated lap-dancing bars for the benefit of poor, repressed men and women choosing to use a bit of battery-operated plastic to pleasure themselves. So don't you worry your pretty little heads about gender politics, girls. Uncle James will sort it all out for you.

Never has there been a more appropriate time to shout WANKER! at somebody.

ETA: from the comments on YouTube, the video is not a real Guinness advert, and Guinness's marketing people are going to get it taken down:
Please be assured that Guinness is in no way associated with this video, and has approached YouTube to have it removed. We are proud of our brand, and our commitment to responsible marketing, and this is not how we want our brand portrayed. For further information, check out our marketing code at Diageo's website.
"Enjoy" it while you can.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was a genuine advert. I don't really watch television any more because the sexism in the advertisements just get me so riled up and angry that I then don't have the energy to watch whatever it is I tuned in for.

(I especially hate the MEN VS. WOMEN advert for that newspaper. Where they're on a battlefield and the men are throwing highly advanced technological things at the women, and the women respond with...high heels and little yappy dogs.)
SB[info]miss_s_b on July 27th, 2008 11:45 am (UTC)
See edit.

And yeah, the advert you refer to WAS for the Daily Fail. I hated it too. I get around this problem by watching channels with no advertising. YAY for auntie Beeb!

Oh thank god. (Although it wouldn't surprise me if it had been a genuine advert and they are now back-peddling as fast as possible).

They showed it at the cinema. THERE WAS NOWHERE FOR ME TO LOOK and when it was over I spent a fierce five minutes whispering to my mum about blatant sexism in the media. xD

Oh i remember that ad. It gave me the red mists as well.

It irritated me well into the first five minutes of the movie. GRRRR.

..Dammit, you keep making me think about things and disagree with myself :S It made me laugh...but you have a point. And if it had been an "advert" for Nuts instead of Guinness, I probably would have hated it on first sight, which is also interesting.

Like I say in the post, if I hadn't have been in angry feminist mode already, I probably would have just laughed too.

As for the article, he lost me early on when he attributed Austen's most famous quote to Bronte - an unspecified Bronte, at that - and tried to use it to prove a point when it's Mrs Bennet's point of view and, er, unreliable to say the least :D

And then it just got worse. Gah. WANKER.

Indeed. Because there's NO DIFFERENCE, you know! It's all about liberalisation! I tried to be unaggressive in my reply, but I don't think I managed it.

Righteous anger there, honey. Your comment said pretty much what mine would have. It's hard to draw a realistic comparison, isn't it? I mean, there's the Chippendales and similar, and even that stuff makes my toes curl, as tame as it is. I cannot imagine how sickened I would feel if hen parties went off to Amsterdam as a matter of course to walk into establishments where they can pay for sexual services from men who wouldn't necessarily have any attraction to them. It's putting me off me sausage butty, to be honest.

Not wanting to get into an argument - just wanted to say that I don't feel that way at all.
SB[info]miss_s_b on July 27th, 2008 04:35 pm (UTC)
I'm kind of with you, in that if women want to sell sexual services, and men want to buy them, then that's fair enough IMHO. But last estimate I saw was that 70% of prostitutes in this country were trafficked women being forced into performing on pain of pain or worse. That's not prostitution, that's rape. And that does tend to colour women's views on the subject.

Even more piss-boiling than his final paragraph, for me at least, was his reply to [info]ginasketch's comment to him.

The one where he deliberately misrepresents her repudiation of his conflation of lap-dancing clubs with vibrators as an ad hominem attack on him, and proceeds to launch into an obfuscatory discussion of his own masturbatory habits.
(Wanker! :D )

Then again, perhaps he genuinely thought that that was what she meant by her comment?
:-o

In which case, he's not only a wanker, but a stupid wanker at that.

Actually, his similarly piss-poor, arrogant reply to yer good self is equally egregious.

In conclusion, I reckon the bloke's nobbut a self-aggrandising Oxygen Thief.

I have made a slightly beer-fueled reply...
gina allnatt: baseball bat[info]ginasketch on July 27th, 2008 10:37 pm (UTC)
I was referring to the fact that quite often when people talk about male masturbation they have to reference porn or strip clubs.

Human beings are far more complex than that.

But hey, *shrug*, he can project take what he likes from it.

What of it?

No, no, no. He's MALE and therefore must be right, and you're female, and therefore MUST be wrong.

LOL, bless your presumption. I'm in favour of gender disintegration, that makes it a tad hard to be a chauvinist.

* patpat *

This is why Uncle James exists to think FOR us...

Eh, if you're horribly wrong I'll let you know. I'm a considerate fellow.

That goes for everyone, frankly your gender doesn't matter in the slightest. I don't know why that prospect seems to unsettle you so much.

WTF? COMPARING VIBRATORS TO LAP-DANCING???

Looks like you misunderstood my argument.

Indeed. Because there's NO DIFFERENCE, you know! It's all about liberalisation!

Yeah, basically. If we're talking about the origins of increased acceptability that's about it. If not you misunderstood my piece.

Oh fuckit. He'll get the wrong idea no matter what. :P

Yeah, evil pro-patriarchal patronising twerp that I am I go out of my way!

I think any form or sarcasm or wisdom will be lost on that bright spark.

Aw, bless you.

I love it when men compare christian fundamentalists and "extremist" feminists.

Eh...I'm afraid that their treatment of children is much the same here. Biting Beaver was horrified at her son masturbating to porn, as a Christian would have been.

I noticed he cited Biting Beaver as the latter. She worked as a prostitute for years and suffered abuse. She can damn well say whatever she likes about the patriarchy in my opinion.

No...Sorry...wtf? She says that she wished she had aborted her son purely because he started watching porn. You are honestly saying that that's fine and alright?

That's fucked up, no two ways about it.

She said that it would be hard for me to believe that it was possible for men to satisfy themselves without porn or lapdancing. Exactly how can that not be directed at my person?

Then again, perhaps he genuinely thought that that was what she meant by her comment?
:-o

It was what she meant.

In which case, he's not only a wanker, but a stupid wanker at that.

Oh, I'm in awe of your scathing use of insults. I'm stupid and a wanker, good lord, what point is their in life?

Actually, his similarly piss-poor, arrogant reply to yer good self is equally egregious.

Oh yeah, and as for you Jennie, I don't recall at any point saying "And here's all the stuff that I'll do to save you womyn having to worry your pretty little heads about anything this complex".

Instead I talked about the influence of the cultural shift which the writer I was responding to so severely misunderstood. I also lambasted her for her bigotry, because all bigots deserve a good lambasting. And frankly I don't know whether you are expecting women to receive special treatment but if so you shall be sorely disappointed. If I read a bad article I'll rip into it as much as it warrants and the author is of precious little consequence.

I don't find that "Patronising" and to call me "Patriarchal" is nothing short of ludicrous.
