There and Back Again (And How to Get There in the First Place) is a place for fanfic and o-fic writers to meet and share ideas and to improve their writing skills without fear of ridicule. Whether you're writing your first story or your fiftieth, if you need help with grammar, characters or canon, or just want to get an opinion on a first chapter, this is the place to come!
FAQ & Community Rules:
1. How do I join?
To join this community, first you will need to create your own personal (free) LiveJournal account. You can do that here.
Once you are logged in, click where it says "To join this community, click here." at the top of this page.
2. How do I participate?
You participate by posting to this Community in repsonse to our monthly writing exercises, by giving feedback to other members in your comments, by asking for feedback on your own pieces and by joining any discussion about writing in the posts of this Community.
What your post should look like is explained in this entry:
a perfect post to "There and Back Again"
Please use the LJ Cut Tag not only for your takes on the various writing exercises, but also for any other long posts. Instructions on how to use this is in the FAQ: FAQ #75.
3. How can I find out about past exercises? Where is everything?
You can find the past writing exercises and helpful definitions in the memories of this community and by looking at the "tags".
4. Acceptable Ratings
Young writers are very welcome in this community!
Therefore we are going to limit posts to no NC-17 material. You may submit "clean" parts of an NC-17 story for critique. All subject matter is welcome. We just ask that you label your story/chapter submissions with pairings (where appropriate), rating (G, PG, PG-13, R) and if it includes "controversial" subject matter: slash, violence, etc.
5. Can I promote my fiction site/archive on the list?
Yes. However, we ask that you keep it reasonable. An occasional mention (especially if there is an exercise that fits with your site) is fine. No spamming, please.
Promotion of sites that participate in "wanking" or exist only to be cruel to newbies/Mary Sues/whatever will not be tolerated. At all. The post will be deleted and your membership in this community will be in jeopardy.
6. Last but not least: "There and Back Again" is a friendly place!
NO FLAMING!
If you don't like someone's AU or a particular pairing, this is not the place to vent. If you think a plot could be improved, then by all means suggest something - constructively! Please be polite in your critiques. On the other hand, if you are receiving criticism, please keep in mind that sometimes what we write appears different than what we mean, and that a post that appears to be a flame may just be badly worded.
We would like to keep this a friendly, open, supportive atmosphere. No question is "stupid". We will try our best to help with canon questions or direct you to an appropriate book or web site.

aranel_took: I started out in fanfiction with Lord of the Rings in 2004. My stories are mostly set in an AU universe featuring the daughter of Merry and Éowyn. My LOTR fanfic can be found at
ivyverse and at aranel-took.fancrone.net. Recently, I've moved on to DC Comics fanfiction. Most of my stories feature the pairing of Hal Jordan/Kyle Rayner (Green Lanterns). Those can be found at
sector_2814 and sector-2814.fancrone.net.
juno_magic: I started my "online" writing career with "Lord of the Rings"-fanfiction in June 2004. Since then I've completed a manuscript in English and German for an original fantasy novel about Atlantis and various original short stories. My latest o-fic project is a medieval fantasy novel about a harper, a warrior and a witch, still very much a WIP. I'm also still writing fanfic. I've ventured - briefly - into the "Black Magicians" fandom and written a few Pern drabbles. Currently I'm immersed in HP fandom and working on an epic romance/adventure novel about my OTP Hermione Granger/Severus Snape. My fanfic can be found HERE. About my o-fic you'll have to ask me in person. And please feel free to approach me with any and all questions. I love writing and talking about writing. I promise I won't bite!
