London Bombings
Am I the only one who finds jokes about the London Bombing sick and unappropriate?

I haven't heard any, but if I do...I'll be sure to let someone know how grossly inappropriate they are.

No. I suppose some people have no empathy and no social skills and choose to show the world that by posting in LJ so they can feel special for 5 seconds.

P.S. - I'm sure if their friends/relatives were involved, they wouldn't be cracking jokes. I don't get it when people revel in other people's pain and suffering. What ever happened to decorum and TACT?!

It depends on the type of joke. Us Brits are famous for the gallows humour. Saying something to the effect of 'Those French are such sore losers' may make that moment easier to bear, but doesn't mean you're feeling the impact of the tragedy any less. It's human nature - everyone reacts in different ways.

Exactly. I've been making little comments like that all morning but it does NOT mean I don't care. I won't exactly make a joke on the question club, but private conversations are full of them.

Are you joking?

If you're not -

There were seven explosions today in London, killing a couple of people and injuring 150+ (these were the figures an hour or two ago anyway).

i can understand the point someone made up there about it being their way of dealing with it, buuut... it's way too early. it JUST happened. i don't even find jokes about 9/11 funny and it that happened nearly 4 years ago.

No, it's not too early. It's never too early to release tension.

A friend committed suicide in 2003. The same day his torn and destroyed best friends were making little jokes, so as to help themselves cope.

You are obviously not someone who can handle that, but don't begrudge others their coping methods.

No, it's not funny. People need to keep that shit to themselves. They wouldn't be laughing if someone they cared about had gotten hurt. If you can't find a better way to express yourself and deal with a rough situation, just keep your mouth shut, because we don't want to hear it.

I haven't heard any. One of my coworkers (who is British) has two nieces (one of whom is her God-daughter) living in London. She hasn't been able to get in touch with the one who lives right near that street with the bus. So I'm sure if anybody dared to make a stupid joke I wouldn't appreciate it much.

No. You may have seen my reaction to that other post. My partner was in London today and she could well have been on one of those tube trains; luckily she chose to drive. Joking about it today is so tasteless and it pissed me off because for a while, i was worried.

It really depends on the nature of the joke. I mean, making fun of people who've died is insensitive, but there are ways to bring humor to a situation while still remaining respectful. (I can't think of any London-related examples yet, but that certainly has been the case with past tragedies.)

1. No, you're not. Obviously.

2. It's 'inappropriate'.

3. "Gallows Humor" has long been a way for people to deal with tragedy. It happens after ANY tragedy, no matter how severe or heartwrenching. People deal with things in different ways, and many times black humor is a way to get through it-- particularly for certain personalities. I know someone who's younger sister died in tragic circumstances, but he jokes about it to keep from crying his eyes out and breaking down. It releases tension, it releases pain. You need to understand that not everyone deals with things the same way as you do.

maybe not-but do they need to do it in a public forum, knowing that people deal in different ways, and knowing people affected by the tradgedy could well be reading?

Making light of it can be a way of coping.

I have several co workers who are Brits and have family back there. I would certainly not joke about it but I don't think there is a need to be bone crushingly serious about it either.

They have been coping with domestic bombings over the years and have handeled themselves very well in this case. If they Brits are taking this calmly and with some dry humor it's prolly a sign for the rest of us to lighten up.
