I'm the only person in the entire world who is not naturally neat. How do you satisfy a neat person? Difficulty: when I try to clean, things are still messy, apparently, even if I've wasted a whole day cleaning and deadlines are piling up and I'm stressed and depressed.

you can only please them so much. i guess ask them how they'd like things done and do it exactly that way?

That's tough, because I'm supposed to just know, although, seriously I don't. If I can see the floor, and there aren't any giant rats, then its clean. I'll clean up obvious messes I see, or dirty bathrooms, but if the baseboards aren't clean, I'll never think about that.

Sounds like you might need to declutter. Clutter will make the tidiest room look messy.

I've decided that if I ever, G*d forbid, get in a roommate situation again, I'm going to pay for a maid service to do my share of the cleaning.

Like you, I just don't see the mess. So I'll put pert of my savings on the rent into a paying someone else who does.

Go about it really systematically. First get rid of clutter. I find probably way too much joy in throwing things away and donating things. Then look at a room in a really systematic way, say, top to bottom. Look for, like, cobwebs in the corners of the ceiling and vacuum them up. Then work your way down - straighten up and dust all the surfaces, empty the trash, and always do the floors last. When you vacuum/sweep/mop, make sure to move furniture and get underneath it too.

The sad part is that things like that will be forgotten by me. In the month or so it takes to get rid of the clutter, I will probably become obsessed by exams or papers. and then I'll forget this all together.

But it's hard because it's so rigid. It has to be a certain way or else you're a bad person, and I can't deal with the pressure. I pick things up, but it's not up to standard, so I'm still a bad person, so it seems like a waste of time.

She's really fucking annoying, as is her army of homeschooling churchladies, but she has some very good suggestions on how to get a handle on just what you're talking about. I was subscribed to her emails for a while and got some great ideas but her tone put me off so much I dropped them. It really taught me a lot about breaking things down into small pieces, doing little bits at a time, calling attention to things you don't see, etc. I recommend taking a look. The timer thing is helpful.

Also: super-neat isn't necessarily the ideal. There's a place in the middle and you both have to work to get there. If your partner/roommate/whomever is constantly bugging you for cleaning the floor and not the baseboards, he or she needs to stfu and clean the baseboards his or herself.

Eh. Ask your parents if they'd rather you clean, or rather you study. Mine always answer study.

Do you have ADD? I'm 99% sure I do, and I can't keep *anything* organized. You ought to see my school notes (when I can manage long enough to even taken them!) I also go *weeks* without doing a damned thing to my room, and then have to do everything at once (usually this includes moving my stuff around as well, which is killer.)

Do you have extra closet space? I have a couple of big tubs that I just throw stuff into at random to keep the clutter down. It's stuff I can't see getting rid of, but if I leave it out it's just too much. I also usually ask a friend to help me, who doesn't care about how messy I am. I had one of my friends talk me through cleaning the last time to help keep me on track. I love her, really.

I can't keep things organized either. My parents say they'd rather me study, but then they complain that I don't clean enoughI haven't been disganosted with add. I do have some closet space, and do sometimes dump things in. I try to clean a bit every day, but it just seems so useless and overwhelming.

I just don't get what the fuck you're talking about. Cleaning is not that hard - yes, it's a "boring and repetitive task with no reward", but it's not complicated.

Take things you don't want to thrift stores. It doesn't take "months", it takes an afternoon. You obviously have time, or you wouldn't be on TQC.

I advise against that. ;)

My advice is to set aside a chunk of time to sort through things and then donate them. My FH has ADD, so we need to be specific about cleaning and getting rid of things.

Don't hold on to stuff in case a friend/family member might want it, give them a deadline.

I live with my grandparents over the summer and during breaks when I'm not in school and they are the pickiest, biggest neat freaks in the world. I can't have one item on my floor or my bed unmade without my grandma telling me it's a mess.

HOWEVER. It is THEIR house and I will keep my room clean and clean any other rooms in the house without complaint because they are being extremely kind in letting me stay with them. I don't care how long it takes or how pointless it seems. It's the very least I can do for them.

On top of that, I'm a senior in college, starting grad school in the fall. I have a 4.0 GPA and I work full time. I don't want to hear you complain about that shit.

You need to get a routine on the go. Most important jobs to be done every day - clean the toilet, bath/shower and sink, wipe the kitchen surfaces before and after cooking, clean the kitchen sink. Change your bed linen once a week, dust & hoover the bedroom once a week, dust & hoover the living room 2-3 times a week. Make sure you put everything back in it's right place when you have used it because that's how clutter appears. It's not rocket science!

Lol no you're not, I'm afraid. I love it when things are neat, but I'm not great at getting them there, and I never have been. Let the other person do it, or give you specific directions - either way, let them know you're trying, and the extra stress their unappreciative judgment is adding is not helping in the least. Good luck!

This whole post made me LOL.

Chick, either get up off your lazy arse and clean or stop bitching and deal with it.

I, too, am a college student, but yet you won't find my room dirty.

Deal with your own shit, please.

You do realise all this time you've spent bitching could've been spent cleaning, right?

DEAR INTERNET:

I am going to ask you for help because I live at home and my parents expect me to clean their house. I am not very good at cleaning and my parents are anal so they are mean to me about it. When you try to give me helpful suggestions on how to clean the house and make my parents happy I will yell at you and be sarcastic and mean, jumping to conclusions and accusing you of belittling me and my situation. I will not take any of your suggestions to heart nor thank you for your concern and help. I will argue with you until you pass out, blue in the face, because I can't deal with reality and I'd rather wank on the internet about my inferiority than do something to change my situation.

Love, [info]animeg3282

You communicate with your parents and find out what they want you to do in specifics. Then you get that chip off your shoulder, do your part, and compromise. I live a very similar situation (my ethos, let me show you it), and as difficult as your parents may or may not be about this situation, you need to take responsibility and stop acting the princess. It is not interesting or sympathetic.

It must be SO HARD to live with your parents while they pay for you to get an education. THEY EVEN MAKE YOU DO CHORES AND CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF! THE HORROR!

Get the hell over yourself and wait until you hit the real world to start whining like this.
