Sorry to spam folks who have [info]copperbadge friended, but this is relevant to the publishing of Nameless, and also to your interests if you support LGBT rights and read literature with gay themes or characters.

NAMELESS

Small-town bookseller Christopher Dusk is happy with his quiet life, until he meets a shy artist and sells him the wrong book. Lucas, a maskmaker and mystic, will challenge Christopher's prosaic view of the world -- but both men are lying, to themselves and to each other, and Lucas may be the one to pay the price in the end.

I began work on Nameless in the fall of 2005 and completed it sometime in January 2006. At the time I did not post it publicly, hoping to send it around to agents and publishers and get it published. I spent the better part of a year soliciting any agent I could find to read the book, and then when I seemed to run out of resources I put it away for a while and moved on to other things. In late 2008 I rediscovered the novel and realised that the reason it had not attracted any attention from publishers was that it was terrible. I rewrote it and decided to post it for public consumption to get further reader feedback. BOY DID I EVER.

This new incarnation of Nameless is currently in its second draft (with at least one more to come), which you can download here:

The above files are complete, but if you are interested in the revised ending (the most significantly altered portion of the new draft) it is available here:

The revised postscript, the "Manifesto" I've referenced on my personal journal, is available here: Postscript Revised

The original as posted for review is linked below.

FYI -- I took some of the commentary on chapter one and wrote a process post for it, which you can find here. Depending on necessity, I'll probably be doing the same for each chapter, though I can't guarantee it. I'll link from posts here, when I do.

Uncertain why you're seeing this? Jack_And_Ellis has changed its name to [info]theoriginalsam in anticipation of a second novel being posted at the comm, chapter one of which is below. For a longer explanation you can check the introduction post over at [info]copperbadge. Enjoy!

Welcome to [info]theoriginalsam, formerly known as Jack_And_Ellis. I'm posting a new novel here, so I thought I'd change the name to something a little more neutral. I hope you'll hang around -- the new novel Nameless isn't as long as The Dead Isle, but it's complete and going up over the course of the next month or so. In fact, you may see chapter one before you see this message. I hope you enjoy!

For an introduction to what Nameless is, you can check a post I made about it on my personal journal, [info]copperbadge.

News of The Dead Isle

News Of The Dead Isle

On October 1st, 2008, my LiveJournal was hacked. One of the casualties of the hack was that this community was emptied completely. I've since rebuilt it from backup copies on my hard drive, but if you have links to specific chapters of Jack And Ellis they are now invalid. These are new links and should work fine if you wish to replace your old links.

I started writing The Dead Isle (working title "Jack and Ellis") around the end of October, 2007. It survived NaNo, what I believe professionals call a "Family Emergency" at Christmas, a broken wrist in February, and a hack in October. It was completed on February 8, 2009, while wildfires in the southern part of Australia were becoming one of the worst national disasters ever to strike the country. If you'd like to help, there is a resource post here at my personal journal.

During the time my wrist was broken in early 2008, I continued to write using a digital pen and with the assistance of transcriptionists. If you're interested in the portions that were hand-written and transcribed, you can find them here.

I have been lucky enough to work with several artists on this project; their work is well worth a look and a lot of fun to boot. You can find the Jack and Ellis Art Archival (artchival?) post here. There are also a number of truly awesome icons available for use here, using quotes from the story.

Note: Dina, from this chapter, is an actual legitimate fan-creation, which is awesome. [info]insixeighttime invented her and allowed me to nick her from this Jack & Ellis fanfic and use her. Thanks!

I am lucky to have a community of fine artists on my journal, and to be able to inspire them to sketch for me on occasion (well, "inspire" -- I mean a legitimate alternate word for inspire is "pester", isn't it?). A number of them have worked on Jack & Ellis; once upon a time there were separate posts, but since the hack I'm just going to roll them into one large one.

Obviously, what lurketh beneath the cut is imageheavy.

ABOUT THE NOVELS

This is the home of two novels:

Nameless: Small-town bookseller Christopher Dusk is happy with his quiet life, until he meets a shy artist and sells him the wrong book. Lucas, a maskmaker and mystic, will challenge Christopher's prosaic view of the world -- but both men are lying, to themselves and to each other, and Lucas may be the one to pay the price in the end.

The Dead Isle: Jack Baker is an engineer in a world where magic is an everyday occurrence. Clare Fields is an expatriate from a country that has no contact with the outside world. Ellis Graveworthy is a famous novelist and a spy. Purva de la Fitte is a pirate princess with a sensible soul. Join them in a steampunk adventure spanning three continents in search of the answer to the puzzle of Australia -- The Dead Isle.
