The Munsters were a family of friendly monsters who are beset by misadventure and never quite sure why their suburban neighbours react to them so strangely. The show ran from 1964-66.
The members the family resembled horror house fiends of the 1930’s. There was Herman a 7 foot Frankenstein and funeral parlour worker; his wife, Lily the vampire; their 10-year-old son, Edward Wolfgang, a werewolf; Lily's father, Count Dracula, a 378-year-old mad scientist; their unfortunate niece, Marilyn, young and beautiful and as the only normal character in the show, she was black sheep of the family; and Spot, a fire-breathing dinosaur who lived under the stairs. The Munsters all lived together in a creepy residence decorated with spider webs at 313 Mockingbird Lane.
Al Lewis (Count Dracula) and Fred Gwynne (Herman) first worked together in “Car 54.” The Munsters was written with them in mind. Fred invented Spot the Dragon.
The original pilot was shot in colour on Alfred Hitchcock’s old Psycho set in 1963. The pilot was made in colour though the actual series was filmed in black and white.
The opening credit sequence for the first season of Lily standing at the foot of the stairs handing out lunch boxes to her children one-by-one as they left for the day was a spoof of The Donna Reed Show. The Munsters’ fantastical comedy appealed to a thirst for imagination in the minds of the audience and the show was an instant hit.
Despite its popularity the show only lasted two years. The introduction of Batman shot in colour at the same time on a rival network dampened The Munsters ratings. The producers realized that to survive the series would have to move into colour, something that was considered as prohibitively expensive.
After the show closed, a number of films were made but the audience had aged and lost its enthusiasm. The Munsters reruns still appear on some local TV stations in the US and in Britain.
