| Oy! Fanartists! |
[14 May 2007|08:21pm] |
UnknowableRoom is in dire need of fanartists willing to draw canon characters (or situations, or objects... anything you'd like, really) to illustrate our wiki!
Full credit will, of course, be attributed; you will also get our eternal gratitude, and the satisfaction of seeing your art put to great use. :)
If you'd like to help, or if you know someone who could either help or allow his/her drawings to be posted there, please comment here or send me an email at christycorr@livejournal.com!

Happy new year!
We're thrilled to announce a new UR feature:
UnknowableWiki!
It's our own wiki project, using the same interface as Wikipedia, but focusing only on the Harry Potter universe (and, of course, ur.org). There are several fanfiction-oriented pages, including helpful tips regarding Mary Sues, characterisation, and much more!
And the best part is that you can contribute! Just register (preferably with your UR.org username) and follow the instructions in the main page.
What are you waiting for? Go check it out!
(A huge, huge thank you to each of you who volunteered and made this wiki presentable! latine, sweetcherrytree, _thirty2flavors, lacunaz, dianaprallon, Gul, firstlightofeos, kirrea, ladyofmasbolle, neverwiser, luminous_star87, alya1989262 and anokam, you guys are brilliant.)

| Credibility and Commitment: A Note of Concern from the Scrivenshaft Administrator |
[27 Feb 2006|01:23pm] |
As each challenge month draws to a close, the Challenges in-box fills up with the efforts of authors across the site and the fandom, little drabbles and lengthy philosophic character studies, all based on a prompt designed to spur their imagination. It takes several hours for each entry to be written, and often the idea is mulled for many moments before the pen ever hits the paper for the first draft. Like many, I look forward to reading these entries, for they represent the innovation and creativity of our fellow writers.
At the Challenge's inception last year, I kept judging to the moderators, feeling that it would be easier to present the winning entries as a fait accompli. After much criticism about the bias of judges, we opened the Challenges to the UR.org membership, deciding to choose from among volunteers a pool of judges for each cycle of entries. The process has been refined each cycle, and for those judges who have participated, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. They enjoy the opportunity to give in-depth feedback (the ballots are fairly complex and comprehensive!) and to compare entries in a controlled (and privileged) environment.
Unfortunately, those who have taken advantage of judging are few and far between. For more than 1000 members of UR.org, there are less than 50 members of the pool from which judges are chosen. Far from a random sampling, then, when 30 judges are selected. More unfortunate is the fact that, on average, less than 40% of judges participate (and for the present challenge, that number is less than 15% as of this posting). To keep an author's story captive for a month for judging, only to have the feedback limited to those few judges (usually the same handful of dedicated members!) is disingenuous and unfair.
As of the next challenge cycle, there will be no more voting on Scrivenshaft Challenges, no more awards, no more month-long wait between posting and any rudimentary feedback. Instead, the Challenges will be run in the model of many LiveJournal challenge sites (among them, omniocular and many of the holiday/gift exchanges). A prompt will be posted as normal, and entries will be accepted within the month time limit. Instead of sending the master copy of the text to the Challenges, the author will be encouraged to post their entry wherever they like, so long as they indicate that the story corresponds to the Challenge and they email the link to their story to scrivenshaft@unknowableroom.org. At the end of each month, a master list will be posted of all entries written for that cycle. This will allow authors the opportunity to get immediate feedback on their writing, and will release judges from a commitment they cannot/do not wish to fulfill. In terms of voting or awards, there will be none. As an administrator, my opinion is biased, and so I cannot be the sole judge, but neither can I allow a small selection of judges (randomly but frequently chosen, given the small population size) to make decisions meant for a group 6 times their number. We may re-open the matter of awards in the future, but such a discussion is contingent upon the response from the UR.org community.
This is neither a polemic nor a condemnation, simply a notice of recognition of a growing problem. Hopefully this solution will be beneficial for all parties, writers and readers alike. The Challenges were originally designed to spur the imagination of writers, and the goal of this re-working is to return the program to its roots and original objective.
Look for implementation of this new process at the start of next month's challenge, which will be posted on or around 1 March.
Thanks and happy writing, everblue3

Oy! You out there! All...788 of you!
Couple of short things:
I'm sure, by now, that all of you have seen the new site and have admired Dede's beautiful (if rudimentary) graphic design. The new site is being built, slowly but surely. We're trying to work as efficiently as we can with Cine to get our ideas onto paper, and we're grateful for your patience thus far. One of our first objectives is to find a way to get the site updates to you as we have them. To that end, we're probably going to use TGB until we can set up our own RSS feed or page on the site. We can report, however, that the first admin email addresses have been set up. (More will, of course, be set up as soon as the other site admins get acquainted with all the FTP workings.) In the meantime, you are free to begin using the following addresses: To reach the site admins: admin@unknowableroom.org (in addition to unknowableroom@gmail.com, of course) Each site admin (the orig. mods) will have an address @unknowableroom.org. Simply add the mod's fanfiction username (located in the second column here) before the @unknowableroom.org. So far, Christy Corr, Solarism, Missers, and I have set up our accounts. We'll let you know once the rest are usable. Mind you, these email addresses are for official UR business, so if you're looking to get in touch with them for personal things, PLEASE use their personal email addresses. For the Scrivenshaft Challenges, we will be using scrivenshaft@unknowableroom.org. Now. Read carefully --- this will not affect this current Scrivenshaft cycle. Repeat - those who have sent in or are planning to send in their entries for THIS cycle may send them to unknowableroom@gmail.com and they will not be lost. All questions and/or future challenge entries should be send to the UR address, however. This is just an FYI, so you're aware.
Second thing (slightly more important):
Many of you have been wondering where your favorite authors (& artists) are, whether they're still lurking online, whether they're waiting for UR to be launched to post their work again. So. Here's a poll that can answer all the pertinent questions. Please take this poll BEFORE 1 AUGUST (or earlier, if possible). I'd like to compile this into a database so that no one wonders where their favorites are. If you know of an author (or artist) from fanfiction who will be unable to answer this poll because of vacation or inability to be online, please comment here with their answers to the following questions (remember, do not post on behalf of an author without their express knowledge and permission) so they may be added to our database. This will not only give us an idea of how many authors we can expect to see posting on the new site, but will also let people know where their favorites have gone. ( Unknowable Room Author/Artist Database Poll ) I should have the database compiled in a week or two. Hopefully, if everyone is cooperative, everyone can keep track of their favorite authors until the new archive is launched.
Thanks, Holly

How do I join the community?
To join The Great Break, click here, or join manually by going to the Great Break’s userinfo. Then, click the available hyperlink and confirm your choice to join the community. You’ll be asked if you wish to "watch" this community, otherwise known as add this community to your friends list. You can change this option at any time, by modifying your friends list.
Why can’t I read any entries in the community?
All entries in this community are friends-only (friend-locked, or flocked). Membership to the community allows you to see all of these friends-only posts.
I've joined. Why can’t I read any entries in the community?
After joining, remember to sign in. All entries should be visible.
I can see introductions and random posts. Where's the Fanfiction?
A fanfiction archive is in the works at UnknowableRoom.org; To read fanfiction here, you can go to user info page of thegreatbreak, where a few links are listed. Among them, there are Fic Recommendations (where you will find fanfiction recommended by the members) and New Stories (which are stories written by members themselves). Or, you can check out the Memories, and find the links to fanfiction from there. Meanwhile, you can check each member author's individual profile page at several other archives, such as Fanfiction.net, Portkey.org and Fictionalley.org.
What is the community all about?
thegreatbreak was formed after the arbitrary deletion of several fanfictions from the fanfiction.net servers. Many authors then decided to build a new, somewhat friendlier archive.
Where is the new archive?
We estimate that, by the end of August, our archive will be hosted here (www.unknowableroom.org/ - UR.org for short).
Who runs the community?
The nine Moderators -- Dede (</a></a> nitwitinperil - Solarism), Sarina (</a></a> sarinileni - Sarinileni), Lynn (</a></a> likeatuesday - Y. Kuang), Holly (</a></a> uswigo - everblue3), Jenna (</a></a> silverspinner - Silverspinner), Erin (</a></a> erak10 - erak), </a> moon_dancing - Missers), Christy (</a></a> christycorr - Christy Corr) and Runi (</a></a> firstlightofeos - Eos) -- currently run the community as well as the archive.
