1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood? Honeysuckle and cut grass in the summer; leather and alfalfa cubes in the tack shed at the barn I rode at; the smell of a brand new pair of ballet slippers
2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have? An imagination.
3. What elementary grade was your favorite? Kindergarten. When we raised caterpillars and then set them free as butterflies.
4. What summer do you remember the best as a child? I remember how every summer we had a family reunion for a week and we spent it in like five condos on the east coast. Every condo had something different - one would be more for the kids, one more for adults. The one my grandparents stayed in always had the best food because my grandma had homecooked everything and brought it with her and if you sat for long enough she'd cut up fresh fruit for you before you ran out the back door and onto the beach.
5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age? Grow old but never grow up.

Innocence

4th

1998...when I was 13. An awkward age, but I was old enough to have fun and remember it.

Act like a kid, there's plenty of time to act like an adult.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood? How far back is "childhood"? The smell of Baby Magic lotion and the taste of Orajel remind me of being a baby. Cut grass reminds me of summers as a child. I have various shampoos and lotions at different ages that remind me of them. Also, the smell of my house and the laundry detergent my family uses.
2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have? An imagination not reliant on technology, and a longer attention span. However, I seemed to be better at that than most kids my own generation. We were already on our way out /-:
3. What elementary grade was your favorite? 2nd. My teacher was awesome, and that was when I decided I wanted to be a writer.
4. What summer do you remember the best as a child? Ooh, tough. I'd say either the summer I was 7 or the summer I was 12. They were particularly good, though most of my summers all flow together as a long, timeless vacation at our lake house, which is nice.
5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age? I don't think I'm old enough yet to do this. I guess I'd say, "Don't try so hard to be friends with people. The people that matter will be drawn to you and click right away; you will know it. Anyone who's too much work is probably just going to cause trouble-- and if they make you cry, it's a deal-breaker, and it's them who should be begging you to be friends, not the other way around."

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?

Smells: freshly-baked cookies from when my mom used to sell cookies at our school and in the mall, pine trees from our family trips to the mountains, chlorine because of the times my brother and I used to train in the swimming team, rusting bike chains and brand new roller blades, and the smell of newspapers from the times we'd paper train our puppies.

Tastes: spaghetti from our children's parties, mini-pizzas that I'd eat after school, Tang orange juice, and tomato and cheese pizza that we'd always eat every Saturday night while watching reruns of Richie Rich.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?

The opportunity to really be a kid and enjoy childhood as it should be. I think that half of today's kids are in a hurry to grow up and the other half are in front of the computer.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?

Fifth. I met my best friends then (they're still my best friends today, more than 13 years later) and we really enjoyed being normal fifth graders who'd rollerblade and have water balloon fights in the yard.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?

The summer after fifth grade. I learned that my mom was pregnant with my youngest sibling, I was winning in the swimming competitions that I joined, and my best friends and I (eerily similar to the four girls in Now & Then, because we were four girls) did everything together -- from malling, to swimming, to biking, to blading, to playing video games. It was such a fun summer!

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?

I'd tell my 13-year-old self to just take it easy and not worry too much about the future and how my future self would turn out. I'd tell her to just enjoy childhood in all its simplicity and let the future unravel in its own way.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
My mother's homemade pizza every Friday.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
A childhood. Today there are too many threats and fears for children to grow up the carefree way they should. At younger and younger ages, kids are forced to deal with the harsh realities of the adult world.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
I honestly couldn't stand elementary school. Or middle school. I was the odd kid out, the butt of jokes.

4. What summer do you remember best as a child?
The summer right before freshman year of high school. We had just moved to NJ. Our neighborhood had a block party, and one of my friends taught me how to play field hockey.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
Depends. If younger me could know it was older me talking, then I would say that everything really does turn out okay, even after all the moving around. That I'll miss the friends I have, but I'll be able to move on.

mom's homemade cooking mainly

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
none really... I blocked out most of my childhood

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
keep to yourself or associate with older people. People your own age suck

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
The smell of cut grass of course, hot tar, coffee in the morning, cleaning supplies and overcooked greenbeans at school. Tastes - garden hose water, ramen noodles, pancakes with fruit faces.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have? Pong for Atari, duh. Competent parents. Salute Your Shorts and pretty much any of those ancient Nickelodeon shows.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
4th grade. Had the awesomest teacher. Everyone was friends. Life was cool.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
I don't know if this really counts as childhood, but it was the summer before my senior year. Watched bad vampire movies every night, drove around, gas was so cheap, a lot of Panda Express.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
Age 13. "Zen. Look it up." I was a high-strung little bastard...

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood? The axle grease and the tractor paint at my dad's Ford/New Holland dealership and the constant smell and flavor of chicken in the air at grandma's house.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have? Responsible parents, for the most part.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite? Third. We all loved Mrs. Afshar, and I was no exception.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child? '77. Star Wars and my first broken arm. Whoa, guess that kind of dates me, doesn't it?

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age? Doesn't matter what the age, I would say to my younger (okay, most likely preteen) self: "Don't be such a friggin' wallflower. It will come back to hurt you when you get older."

Rubber. Seriously? The smell of tents.

Woods to play in. Life without the internet.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
The fourth. I got kicked out because I laughed too much, and I loved it.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
I don't remember the year, but we were in Italy. And I hung out with this biker gang.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
At age nine, I'd tell my younger self that I am not responsible for my parent's problems.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite? My favorite elementary grade was sixth grade...I was no longer a baby and was going to Middle School soon.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child? The best summer I remember was the first summer we went to Florida! Florida was like visiting another planet. We spend two weeks in the Daytona area and I loved every minute of it.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age? I would tell myself to not stress about what others think about me. There is more to life than impressing a bunch of teeagers.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
~ I remember smelling my grandmothers perfume that she used to wear called Tova, and I remember tasting Dunk-a-roo cookies and these amazing chocolate dinosaur cookies that they don't make anymore, which is sad.
2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
~ A sense of imagination. Unfortunately, I think the toys that at least priviledged have, don't let children today appreciate things like TV boxes that could become houses and so forth, everything is already thought of and done for them.
3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
~ Second
4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
~ My first trip to Disneyland that I remember vividly, the pictures still make me tear up because it was when my parents were still together and I looked happy.
5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
~ I would tell myself at 14 when entering High School, "you're going to be tempted to sell yourself out here, DON'T DO IT. Be and stay who you are, friends or not its more important to know that you were always real"

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
The smell of lake water and the taste and smell of chlorine. I used to swim all the time.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
Good television!

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
I liked 4th grade I think at the time...

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
Hmm, I don't know. I liked every summer equally I think.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
I can't think of anything to say. I changed a lot for the better in 7th grade, I think that's fine.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
The heating vent in my room next to my bed ... whenever i hear that thing kick in, and its scent gets pushed up through the vent, it kicks me back into those first nights of sleeping in a bed ...

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
The freedom, and desire, to play outside.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
It's hard since i was always a bullied kid - but i guess grade 6, since i had my first girlfriend.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
It's hard, cuz they blend together - no school, playing all day, going on trips and stuff - i enjoyed going "camping" by the Okanagan (a lake in BC, Canada), but one time there was an arcade with Double Dragon and it was awesome, haha.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
"It'll get better. Once you realize that wearing the 'cool clothes' doesn't lift you from your geek status, you'll accept who you are and be stronger for it! But you still won't be able to beat up a bully, so keep staying invisible ... but learn how to make friends with people now, cuz you aren't going to be able to learn how when you get older..."

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
Smells: the way our leather hiking boots smelled after being freshly waxed, in preparation for another backpack trip. The smell of our backpacks: dirt, tree sap, chocolate, other assorted aromas. The hot, dry smell of my dad's kiln when it was firing.

Tastes: homemade pizza. Fresh raspberries off the bushes.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
Two acres of field to run, play, hide in - they're now tennis courts and houses, damn it all.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
I'm not sure. I think the 3rd grade, because my teacher (Mrs. Scamahorn) was excellent.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
What defines 'child'? I remember our 2 week canoe trip when I was 13 as part of an awesome summer. But until my parents divorced when I was 16, summers were generally delightful. Hiking, camping, playing on a friend's farm.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
I would tell my 13 year old self to be more honest with myself. Confide more in my favorite aunt, who wishes I had so she could have helped me through treacherous waters. Not be so fearful. Stand up to my mother.

1. What were some of the smells and tastes of your childhood?
- the smell of cut grass and a cowshed at my great-aunt's farm where I still visit every summer (though there's no cows nowdays), the smell of resin in your hands after climbing trees all day.
- taste of pancakes, homemade pizza every now and then, the snow you ate though you knew you're not allowed to do that.

2. What did you have as a child that you do not think children today have?
- better children's tv shows, longer childhood, urge to rather be outside running in the forest than inside playing computer games or something.

3. What elementary grade was your favorite?
- first or second, I pretty much hated every other grade.

4. What summer do you remember the best as a child?
- There's none I remember the best. I remember many trips with my family and those trips are one of the only good memories I have from childhood.

5. What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self, and at what age?
- To about 10-year-old me: "Defend yourself no matter how hard it feels or you will regret it later when they have made you believe you're worse than others".
