But the sun doesn't last longer at the end of summer, the days are actually shorter in August than they were in June.

way to nitpick. Big deal... Give yourself on the pat on the back for knowing that. To me they seem longer.

*blows raspberry*

No nitpicking intended at all, apologies for ruffling your feathers. Maybe the days seem longer at the end of summer because the sun is at a different angle. I tend to spend summer nights outside with a telescope, so my impression is that the nights are longer.

1. What is the best part about late summer?
Probably knowing that the cooler temps of Fall are on the way. Especially today with the 105* temps. But also my birthday. (Beginning of Sept)

2. what is your favorite memory and why?
Riding the waves with my Daddy at the beach. By riding the waves, I mean he'd help me get out past where the waves were breaking and he'd hold on to my hands and I'd float/tread water (he could touch the ground) and when a wave would come we'd jump and glide over it. It was great. I now try to do it with my boys.

3. when you were small, did you realize summer vactions were not going to happen forever?
I take this question to mean did you realize when you grow up that you don't automatically get summer vacations from work/school... And the answer to that is yes.. eventually... when I got OLD!!! Which, of course, was a really really really long long time from then. :)

4. where was your favorite summer vacation? why?
Da Beach! I love the beach. Sitting on the deck and listening to the ocean after spending a day out playing in it. Walking in the morning and picking up sea shells. I love trips to the beach. (Luckily I have one coming up in a few weeks!! :) )

5. If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why? I would take my boys and cross the country a few times seeing all the fun, neat things that we want to see.

1. What is the best part about late summer?

When I was school aged: late summer fairs and Kennywood with friends from school, school supply shopping. And just the smell, the grass being a bit *drier* when you'd walk through the woods and fields, they all have a different smell, and the sunlight, the sunset I should say, just looks different, more orangey, longer if you wil.

Now? Same stuff, sort of, but now it's for my 5 year old and we get to experience these things together. I hadn't noticed these things in a long time, really, 'cause with work, there's no distinct ends/beginnings to the seasons.

2. What is your favorite memory and why?

Of late summer? Late August vacations to the Delaware seashore. And I got engaged in the late summer. :)

3. When you were small, did you realize summer vactions were not going to happen forever?

Yes and no, but summer in general felt a hell of a lot longer back then!

4. Where was your favorite summer vacation? why?

Well, all of my childhood vacations to DE (we went a lot), and some as an adult, too... also, my hubby and I went to Key West one summer and it was great, but it was *early* summer.

5. If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why?

Fiji.

What is the best part about late summer?
That's it's almost over anf winter is on it's way.
what is your favorite memory and why?
I assume you eman favorite summer memory? When I was little, I spent a lot of time at my Gram's house. I really liked it.
when you were small, did you realize summer vacations were not going to happen forever?
I'm 25, and I still haven't realized this. Don't ruin it for me.
where was your favorite summer vacation? why?
Er...my family wasn't big on vacations really. And besides, I hate vacations in teh summer. I like to travel, but it just sucks to be hot and miserable while trying to enjoy and experience new things.
If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why? Alaska on a cruise. Because it would be relaxing, beautiful, and a shit-ton cooler.

Greece. After graduating from high school, my mom and I spent a month traveling around Greece.

1. What is the best part about late summer?

I love the light in the late afternoons, especially if it's shining through leaves.

2. What is your favorite memory and why?

(Of late summer) ... aged 18, sitting in the back doorway in the house where I grew up on sunny evenings, knowing that this was the last summer I was going to spend there, (I was going to university in the autumn) and trying to imprint every moment on my mind to remember in future.

3. When you were small, did you realize summer vacations were not going to happen forever?

Of course - my parents both worked most of my life - Dad always worked full-time, and Mum looked after us until I was five or so, then worked too. I think that was one of the things that made summer holidays most enjoyable - they were the territory of kids, one of the few things we had that grown ups didn't!

4. Where was your favorite summer vacation? why?

Oh, going to Start Point in Devon in 1992. Definitely. It was the first holiday where it wasn't just me, Mum, Dad and my sister - we had aunties and uncles, cousins and second-cousins. And my dog. As there we so many of us, we rented a big house on top of the cliff for two weeks (it's now changed hands and is a B&B) and it was the epitome of the perfect holiday.

The sun shone every day, we went on trips to farm parks and stately homes, explored towns and villages, walked along the cliffs and played on the beach. In the evenings, we had barbecues outside and sat looking over the sea until late. First thing in the morning, I'd sit in the window of the living room, reading and listening to my walkman (don't snort, iPod people) and watching the ocean for hours.

Looking at the pictures on that website brings a lump to my throat - and I'm saddest knowing that I could never go back again.

5. If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why?

The far South coast of England, again, and I'd rent a house by the sea with amazing views. Three, four weeks - long enough to feel completely away from the normal world. I'd look for somewhere with little boats to sail out just far enough to feel adventurous and its own beach. Caves and shiny shells, somewhere to sit and watch the sun come up very early in the morning.

1) What is the best part about late summer

The last few lift days in the high country before ski season. Rocking out on your bike like you own the place and knowing that the clock is ticking away to ski season. Tourists really ruin skiing, biking is still small enough that the only people who go are passionate about it. I love skiing, but I have to bury myself in the hidden backbowl we don't tell the tourists about to enjoy it at all.

2) What is your favorite memory and why?

Sitting on the beach in Puerto Vallarta watching the ships roll out. Some glowing blue stuff would roll ashore and a thousand stars were out. It was our honeymoon. Good times.

3) When you were small, did you realize summer vactions were not going to happen forever?

It was at a very young age. My parents were always giving me reading assignments and homework to do over my summer break. They told me to buck up and get used to it, this was the real world. Beats the hell out of being my 27 yr. old acquantaince who lives with mom and dad making $7.50/hr working part-time at hobby lobby cause he can't grow up.

4) Where was your favorite summer vacation? why?

The summer I spent working just enough to race on the weekends and hang with my girlfriend (now wife) up at CSU. I raced my bike all over the rocky mountains and took 2nd in the mountain states cup racing on an injured ankle.

If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why?

I'd take the whole summer off and travel Europe with a back pack and buy a sweet trail bike over there. I'd ride the Alps, and all of the world cup courses. I'd do all those things on my list of things to do before I die, and head home after Oktoberfest in Munchen.

1. What is the best part about late summer
it's got perfect weather.

2. what is your favorite memory and why
Going to camp growing up. I always had the best time there.

3. when you were small, did you realize summer vactions were not going to happen forever?
Not really. I mean I knew it, but I didn't think about it. It always seemed so far away.

4. where was your favorite summer vacation? why?
The summer in which I spent all my days at my then best friend's house. We were so inseperable then.

5. If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why?
The shore. I LOVE the shore. And if money is not an issue, it'd be in the carribean :)

1. The nights are cool.
2. It's a day that my girlfriend and I spent together. I don't think there is any way I can put it into words, so I won't even try.
3. No! Which is extremely disappointing to me now.
4. Australia/New Zealand. I went with a competitive swimming group and I had the time of my life. I can't wait to go back on my own.
5. I would go everywhere. Honestly. All over Europe, Africa, India, Thailand, and back to Australia and New Zealand. Hey, cost isn't an issue, right?

Response to [info]thefridayfive" from an earlier date":

1) What is the best part about late summer.

Watching the two trees in front of my house change to wondrous colors seemingly overnight.

2) What is your favorite memory and why.

Sitting on my Grandma's lap on a steel shaky kitchen chair, in the middle of the night since I was afraid, or more so alone at heart, watching the moon out the very tiny window. She'd talk about it, to me, and we'd talk to it. It was that sharing that changed my life. She was my best friend, and always will be.

3) When you were small, did you realize summer vacations were not going to happen forever?

I knew, but I really never thought of technicalities. The innocence of a child’s world.

4) Where was your favorite summer vacation? why?

I grew up poor, and we only had one, to a water park. There was a week long camp for very poor people, where you lived for a week, and the children all stayed in cabins. When you got older, your parents didn't stay at the camp. Yeah, I very much enjoyed that.

5) If you could have one last real summer vacation and cost was not an issue, where would you go and why?

To a secluded cool temperature area on the ocean, with very large rocks to sit on, and get lost in the ocean's tide.
