Friday Five -- April 20, 2007
This week's questions were suggested by [info]mmia.

1. How are you stereotypically female?
2. How are you stereotypically male?
3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?
4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?
5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

1. How are you stereotypically female? Shopping. What else defines a female? I like to shop. Albeit for groceries, or shoes. Anything.

2. How are you stereotypically male? I don't fret over how I look. Most males I know, are jeans and teeshirt, and thats what I am.

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender? I think almost everything can be classified. Other than sleeping.

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics? I have a male career goal, but I love lipgloss. So probably neither.

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be? Probably male. I know whats it like to be female, so now I'd like to try the other one.

1. How are you stereotypically female? I know what colors are called, beyond "red," or "black" or even "blue-green." I believe that Aqua and Teal are separate entities, and I can tell the difference.
2. How are you stereotypically male? If I ask you a question, I want the answer; not a lie that will make people feel good. A lot of the time I don't even want an explination. Yes or no suffices.
3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender? My fashion sense, because I skip back and forth between tomboy and hyperfem, and speech patterns, because I am predominantly neither.
4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics? I actually think I'm primarily male. On the surface, I'm feminine, but inside, I'm happiest when I'm masculine.
5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be? Male.

1. How are you stereotypically female?
Being able to bear children.

2. How are you stereotypically male?
I like porn.

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?
Being addicted to the internet/lj, studying design, being interested in what goes on in the world, being kinda goth, having a pet,... much, actually.

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?
Based on my upbringing majorly female.

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be?
Gender is a construct of society. I even had a hard time choosing what of me is very 'male' and 'female', because all this is so based on society and not truly on being male or female. Go back into another time and it was perfectly fine for men to use makeup in certain societies. Go into a certain scene (goth) or country (scotland) and it is perfectly fine for guys to wear skirts. I know there are many things considered male (fighting, sports, liking cars...) or female (dressing nicely, going shopping, caring for others...), but I believe the major part of women behaving female and men behaving male is because of their upbringing and how they were taught by society to behave.
Considering this I can't really choose. I'd like to be a guy just to know what sex feels like with a cock, but all in all I'd say it doesn't matter to me which gender I am. But if I could choose I'd love to be brought up in a society without gender stereotypes.

I really like your fifth answer. You're right on about gender stereotypes and how nice it would be to live in a society such as this (especially given any number of people who struggle with their own genders.)

1. How are you stereotypically female? I can't leave the house without makeup, and I was born to nurture. Being a mom is the best job I've ever had.
2. How are you stereotypically male? I can't back down from an argument, I'm stubborn, and I'm strong. I also hate to ask for help.
3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender? I think my lack of athleticism could work with either gender. I'm kind of computer nerdy, but not Linux nerdy. Just blog nerdy.
4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics? I'm definitely primarily female in characteristics. Particularly the genital characteristics. lol
5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be? A woman. 100%, every time. We have the curves, and curves are powerful. We also get to have the babies, which is an awesome privilege and responsibility given to us by God. Way more important than peeing standing up.

1. How are you stereotypically female?
I like make-up, shoes, and clothes when they fit. I like dressing up, probably because I don't get many opportunities to do so. I enjoy cooking too but I'm not sure which gender to place that under. Women were the ones to take home-ec, but I see a lot more men when I click by Food Network. Oh yeah, I can tell shades apart.

2. How are you stereotypically male?
Well, I understand you need a Y-chromosome to like taking things apart, or putting things together. Likewise for games that aren't Hello Kitty Island Adventures or an enjoyment of math. Yes I love numbers. Big surprise, I know. I've also been told that cleaning is not a part of the Y-chromosome, so there you go.

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?
Let's go with the important one - my mind. Female brains are supposed to be better at multi-tasking, while male brains are supposed to be better with spatial skills. I think I'm not too bad with either. I've also got no maternal instinct to speak of, nor much of a nurturing nature of any other sort.

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?
Generally I tend to come off butch. Were it not for the fact I get called, "Sir," all the time, I'd say that I'm probably recognized as a masculine female. However, I also have to conclude that people are unobservant because how many men do you know sporting DDD boobs? You'd think between those, some make-up, my hair down, etc., that my gender would have been apparent. Now I don't bother trying to cue people either way, especially in non-personal communications (phone, e-mail, etc.) That's also why I tend to just use my initials in correspondence. They can draw their own conclusions and be surprised if they see me in person. However, since affirmative action still exists in some places, I've reverted back to full name use in those instances.

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be?
Oh hell. Male. Nobody gives a rat's ass whether or not you spawn, you don't get a period, it's acceptable to like to take things apart, it's assumed that you're capable in technical matters, and ambition isn't considered a bad thing. I also like the idea of going my entire life as Mr Lastname, rather than Miss Lastname, Mrs Newname, or Ms Peopleassumethingsaboutyouname. That's one of the reasons I would have liked being Dr Lastname, but that's just not going to happen. Sorry, Ellipsis! Good thing you're not reading :p

2. How are you stereotypically male?
I hate hate hate stereotypes and try not be like them or prove them

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?
Almost every thing with the execption of males unable to have children

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?
who cares, Males, again with the exception of pregnancy, can do everything females do and vice versa

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be?

1. How are you stereotypically female?
I have boobs and I am not embarrased to ask for directions when I'm lost.

2. How are you stereotypically male?
I hate wearing make-up; I am most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt. I love Hockey and video games. When there's a project to do around the house, I do it myself instead of asking for help. I love my car and I am a tightass when it comes to money and gas.

3. What parts of you do you consider unclassifiable as either gender?
I have no idea, to be honest.

4. Do you think you are primarily male, female, or neither in characteristics?
Male, most definitely.

5. If you could be born as any gender, knowing the gender prejudices as they are now, which would you choose to be?
Male, just because I hate the pains in my stomach when it comes to PMS, menstration, and then ovulation. And it feels like I'm suffering for nothing because I am never going to have kids. I can't wait until it all ends at menapause.
