Friday Five -- November 10, 2006
This week's questions were suggested by [info]nicklngn.

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
Boston, 140mi to the Northeast. It's an amazing city with amazing people, and the Red Sox

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
Not really, no.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
At some point, both. I get homesick towards the end of a trip, but I am excited when I first arrive.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
Automobile for close, plane for far.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
Overplan, as in I pack about 10 more outfits than I'll need, but I always take into consideration what places I'll be going and what I need to wear there.

Yay! A Friday Five that's up on a Friday!

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
South, as it's my only option. The other three would see me end up in the ocean.

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
Desert Road. It's just beautiful.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
Starting a trip. I get butterflies and it's so much fun! Especially my first o/s trip.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
Plane.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
Overplan! Then get annoyed when I don't get to do some things!

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?

I'd go south and that would put me in Havana. What's not to love about Cuba? (...except, maybe, Castro and the shitty economy.)

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?

U.S. 1, from Key West to Islamorada. The view is unbeatable.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?

It depends on where I'm going. If it's a vacation, I like the outbound trip better. If I'm going to visit family, I'm anxious to get home.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?

Plane. The benefits of air travel will always outweigh the negatives for me.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)

According to other people's standards, I "underplan" because I like spontaneity, which often involves buying clothes when I get there, but it works well for me.

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there? Definitely not north or south... probably West, but I'd go way more than 100 miles... I'd like to live on the West Coast, probably Seattle or close to it.

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering? No favourite stretch, I just go where I feel.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home? Start a trip. If it's a LONG trip, I'll be happy to come home, though.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot? Plane and car. I ride my bike sometimes for exercise.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.) Underplan. I hate rigid schedules on trips.

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
I would move back to AZ. I grew up there so it will always be my home. I also have friends and family that live there as well.

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
I love traveling on Route 66 when I did my trip around the US with my ex and his famiy. There was lots of desert and lots of vintage places scattered here and there.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
I'd have to say both and that depends on how the start or finish was. If it makes sense, the start is always great. Anticipation is wonderful. The return can be rough, there may be a reason to stay or to go.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
Any of the above, not so much by plane though. I have a fear of flying now.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
I'd have to say I underplan. Usually trips now for me are spur of the moment. Even if/when I did plan a trip I always forgot something important.

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
i'd go west, because it's closer to colorado. (plus the place where i'd be is manhattan, which is a damn nice town if you ask me.)

2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
any old highway in colorado will do.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
starting it. i hate endings. even when they're happy. coming home is an ending.

4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
depends on the distance. i love to fly, though.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
sometimes i overplan. better to have too much money to do it than not enough.

1) 100 miles is a short distance in a state with a 75mph speed limit. I'd go Northwest to Frisco and Dillon. Ski all winter, Mountain Bike all summer... life would be complete.

2) Dahlberg Rd. A little known dirt road in Douglas County... 1 1/2 lane wide windy yet open enough to hit 100mph in places (speed limit is 35), you can use the drainage to pit your front wheel and drift the corners at 60 like you're on rails.

3) Start a trip... life is a journey not the destination

4) Bicycle, go out on one into the mountains, lose yourself and you'll understand

5) Underplan, leave some flexibility to have fun, and suprise yourself

1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?

~~~ East - the Atlantic Ocean. Actually I think 100 miles would get me in the middle of New Jersey, but I would choose to go to the seashore.
2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
~~~ I like travelling the country roads in my county. They are peaceful, curvy and full of history.

3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?

~~~Starting a trip because of the excitement of it all.
4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
~~~ Depends on how far I go. If it is under 3 hours, by car. If I can take the train to it, I will. Otherwise, I would take the plane. I am not big on going on hiking and biking.

5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)

~~~ I usually overplan, but I have learned it is better to underplan. If you overplan, you can't do everything. If you underplan, then you can add things that you see along the way.
And to add to the equation - you can overplan and then decide to do only half of what you planned, so you can add the things you took away if you DO have the time to fit them in.
1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
San Diego, beach and sun nonstop.
2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
Pacific Coast Highway, from Malibu to Ventura.
3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
Return home.
4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
Auto.
5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
Underplan, I prefer to have freedom to manuever rather than be constrained.
1. NYC. no doubt about it. the energy there is amazing. and my best friend lives there. so it'd be awesome to call it my home.
2. there's one part about driving on interstate 95 South that I like, and that is driving through downtown Jax on the Fuller Warren bridge & seeing some of the skyscrapers. especially at night, the bridge just infront of them has a purple light across it. it's beautiful.
3. start a trip, definitely!
4. Plane all the way. nothing beats the speed of airplane travel.
5. I've done both. my next trip out of here I've had planned for about 2-3 months. the last time I went to NYC, I decided on it & bought the ticket 24 days before I left. so it really just depends on what's going on in my life & how spontaneous I feel.
1) If you had to move 100 miles or more to the north, east, west, or south, which would you choose, where would you end up, and what's so great about there?
Hmm, I'd probably go east. Not sure exactly where that would get me, but closer to the coast than I am now. That'd be nice, I suppose. I mean, nothings drastically different in any place in New York, other than NYC. Going north gets me to Canada, west to... uh, more New York, maybe some Canada, south... more New York, but I guess east would be best.
2) Do you have a favorite stretch of highway or byway for driving, touring, or wandering?
At home, I adore this little byway out in semi-farm country. It's absolutely beautiful, and I love to drive there when it's sunset, or in the middle of the night and roll down the windows. Everything's really peaceful and enchanting, I can't really describe it. But the place is almost like... ruins of some really old structure (really out-of-place looking stone fences) on one side, and a deep valley on the other side.
3) Are you happier to start a trip or return home?
It depends on where I'm coming from/going to. Going abroad, starting a trip. But if I'm at uni like I am now, I'm much happier to start the trip home.
4) Plane, train, automobile, bicycle, or foot?
Plane! I love air travel, airports, everything about it.
5) Do you overplan or underplan your travels? (Assume that "no" is not a valid answer.)
It depends, I suppose. I think I tend to underplan more.
