The Friday Five: 9/9/05
This week's Five are brought to you by [info]bindyree.

1) What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?

2) If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)

3) What was your favorite year, music-wise?

4) If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?

5) Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so here:

Old sets that were used have been deleted, so please feel free to suggest some more!

What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart. (How embarrassing!)

If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)
  • Velvet Goldmine soundtrack

  • The Libertines - Up The Bracket

  • Jay Z - The Blueprint

  • Busted - Busted

  • The Libertines - The Libertines

  • What was your favorite year, music-wise?
This year - I've discovered a lot of amazing bands. 1997 was great too because I was a huge Hanson-freak.

If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?
Well, I wish I could have witnessed Elvis-mania.

Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?
Iggy Pop & The Stooges - Search and Destroy. It's so angsty and straightforward.

    1) What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?

probably Beatles and Clapton stuff that I recognized from my parents' album collection

    2) If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)

    3) What was your favorite year, music-wise?

probalby 1998 -- Far, Matt Nathanton, Depeche Mode and Green Day were all releasing CDs steadily. Went to plenty of live music events - Gary Numan, Depeche Mode (twice), Far (numerous times), LGS, and tons of others. Plus that was the year I put together the Erin Conn Memorial concert (Luckie Strike, Floppias, Orisha & Little Tin Frog) and was able to raise some money for a good cause.

    4) If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?

I'd like to be in the studio for the making of one of the truly great albums -- Beatles "the white album", Bowie "Ziggy Stardust", Depeche Mode "violator", etc.

    5) Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?

    The Mountain Goats "this year"

    1. What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?

    2. Oh wow! That's a toughie. The first song? I really am not sure which one was absolutely first. I remember Band on the Run as one being pretty early on. Then maybe
    3. If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)

    4. What was your favorite year, music-wise?

    5. Year? An absolute one year? Hmm. I don't know think I can remember one particular year. Gee, am I just getting so old now that I can't remember anything? :P I can pick a decade or a group of years. I'd say late seventies, early eighties. Music meant an awful lot to me then. Now when I hear music from that era a flood of memories come back. Even for songs that I didn't like then, I love them now. :)
    6. If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?

    7. What the heck? I'm not sure I can even think of a historical music event! I miss the Texas Jams. I loved those and went to a couple when I was a teen. I suppose I'd like to do them over again.
    8. Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?

    9. It really depends on my mood I guess. I'm not a big music lover any longer. I mean, I like music, but my kids listen to so much that I don't really get into it like I used to.

My journal is also friends only, so here are my answers:

    1) What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?
"I Just Called to Say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder. I actually remember sitting on the carpet, listening to that, when I was little.

    2) If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)
Ah, the CD selection. Another day would probably produce a different answer, but today I pick The Who's "Quadrophenia", Peter Gabriel's "Us", The Faint's "Danse Macabre", dEUS's "Worst Case Scenario", and - surprise, surprise - Of Montreal's "Satanic Panic in the Attic" (no, "The Sunlandic Twins" did not top it).

    3) What was your favorite year, music-wise?
Every year! No, I miss the 90's. I think 1995 or 1996 must be my favourite year.

    4) If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?
I can't think of anything. I was thinking of Woodstock or the Beatles recording at Abbey Road, but that's just too unoriginal.

    5) Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?
"Mr Roboto" by Styx. Because it's awesome. We need more over-the-top music like that.

1.) What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio?
  • I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons) by Nat King Cole. Okay, not exactly from the radio, but I heard it a lot growing up, and it always reminds me of summer afternoons and napping.

    2) If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)
  • Sarah Mclachlan's Surfacing, Bond's Explosive, Robbie William's Live in Knebworth, Eraserheads' Ultraelectromagneticpop!, Eva Cassidy's Songbird

    3) What was your favorite year, music-wise?
  • 1995 - out of high school, into college; great memories

    4) If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?
  • Jim Morrison being arrested on stage. Would have been a great story to tell :)

    5) Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?
  • It's The Way You Make Me Feel by Steps. Shut up. I like that song. It makes me want to dance :)
