Firefly drabble-plus: Serenity

I have no idea if I ever posted this, I just found it in my Firefly folder and I like it. So here you go.

Serenity

At first she hadn't been a ship so much as a liferaft. Something to hang on to, to focus on, the keep him afloat on the vast sea of memories and thunder and screams. Something to nurture, though that wasn't a word he would have used back then.

When she could fly again she truly became his ship; somehow more so than when she was dirtside. A self-contained world with all he held dear, little as it was. He liked best to be far out, alone in the black. He'd named her Serenity because you could never leave Serenity, it stayed with you, and it was no use trying. The ship was both kinds - the good and the bad, and freedom besides, and it was home in a way he never expected to find anymore. Malcolm Reynolds wasn't stable, not by a long shot, but the ship under his feet compensated him with her motions, evened him out, grounded him even as she took him flying.

Yanked! Might be another purpose with this story. If that doesn't work out, it'll return.

Once more with writer's block

Haha, last post more than a year ago. I was struggling then and I am still struggling now. I used to have this fire-in-the-brain inspiration feeling, a story happening so fast that I had to write fast to keep up. Characters talking in my head - positively yammering sometimes.I wrote this at some point:

"Most days, writing is loading your characters in a car and driving them somewhere. Some days you know exactly where to go and how to get there. Some times you might only have a vague idea where you're going. Sometimes you're asking them where they'd like to go. Sometimes they're telling you where to go... or where not... and sometimes they're just sitting there going "Are we there yet?" and "Can we stop for icecream?" every five minutes.

Then there are the days where they put YOU in the back seat and take off, tires screeching, windows open, radio turned up high, yelling WHOHOOO! at the top of their voices and making rude gestures out of the window. I have a lot of those days."

Well, for the past 2 years or so, I've had no such days. Characters have outright refused to even get into the car. I'm standing there with the door open and a hopefull expression, but... nothing. I know people say to just write anyway, and I do try, but it's all pretty dire and joyless without that buzzy feeling of a story happening...

I'm very vaguely plucking at Stowaway at the moment and polishing it up a bit. May repost it if I get anywhere. I'm very down at the moment and it's at least a good distraction from feeling like whale shit on the bottom of the ocean.

The Upside

I've been floundering fiction-wise for the past 8 months or so - nothing is really happening. I want it to, but I just have no inspiration for any of my characters. (and yes I know as a writer you have to write regardless, but I do this for the fun of it)

Then the other day I watched Pride and Prejudice and for some reason my desert stories started tickling a little. So I did some rereading and I think I might be able to work on The Upside. It has about 2 more chapters to go, so that might work.

So here is it: The Upside. Chapter 7 is just newly posted.

Notes on a Fridge, part 16 A+B

Fandom: Firefly/Serenity
Title: Notes on a Fridge, part 16 A+B
Series: Notes on a Fridge
Author: [info]arwen_lune
Disclaimer: Joss owns. Obviously. No Ursula drawings in this one.
Setting: after the series, before the BDM
Author's Note: This is the one that got me stuck for a year! I'm not completely happy with this one, but I've decided to chuck it out there anyway, because it will hopefully unblock the way for more notes. It's not the easiest format: they are the slips of paper mentioned in note 15. You can assume that only the people who wrote something on a bit of paper actually saw that bit of paper. I've just put them together in a larger image because 8 seperate little notes would be a pain to present.

The Downside/The Upside - Desert set stories

I started [info]thefictionary long after I was active with this stuff, and it's just occurred to me that none of it is known here. Since I've picked the fandom back out of the freezer, perhaps I should introduce it here.

The Mummy and The Mummy Returns stories, based on Ardeth Bay and his tribe, a nomadic people called the Medjai. The story has little to do with the films; it merely picks up this character and digs into his backstory. I started the original Downside in 2000 and completely rewrote it in... 04/05, I think. It's an adventure/romance and I put a lot of research into it (something I enjoy) but the basic premise is something I probably wouldn't start again now. I guess it's just really strange to still be writing on a storyline that I started such a long time ago; I've certainly developed as a writer since then. Keep that in mind while you read.

In any case, I've just started working on the Upside again and thought I'd mention it here in case anyone is interested. I'd love to get some feedback, especially on the Upside since I'm still working on it.

The Downside: 55 000 words, action/adventure.
The Upside: in progress, adventure/romance.

Whatever Our Souls Are Made Of, organisational post

Whatever Our Souls Are Made Of is a crossover fanfic between Standoff and Bones, inspired by the announced 'sharing an evening' programming on FOX.
I am writing this fiction with the assumption that not many readers are familiar with both fandoms, so everybody will get proper introductions and I hope to avoid confusion. No background is required, though it may help to know that Standoff is about FBI hostage negotiators, and Bones is about an FBI agent teamed up with a Forensic Anthropologist to solve murder cases.

I will add the links of chapters to this post, to make it easier to find back updates later on.

Please leave feedback! It makes writing so much more fun if you tell me what you think.

2 more Standoff drabbles

I'm often the most interested in how a team interacts outside of a crisis - I had that with SG1 as well. How do they relate to each other in their downtime? Here are two more snippets.

Quick and dirty guide to Standoff

Seeing as a lot of people seemed to look at this and go "Don't know that", maybe I should just introduce the fandom, because my brain appears to be stuck there for the moment. It'd be cool if you could watch the series, but if you can't/won't/don't feel like it, this should make my stories in the fandom make some resemblance of sense.

Note: For drabble challenge 'Procrastination'. Ended up being a quadrabble

"Frank," Cheryl said as she entered the break room. Frank's head shot up from where he'd been contemplating the contents of the fridge. He grabbed the first thing within reach - Emily's smoothie - and stood up.

"Hey Cheryl. I gotta get back to the—" he grasped around, "training."

She didn't move away from the door opening, and he came to a halt in front of her. She savoured the moment - he had been avoiding her all week.

Standoff drabbles

Yeah yeah, I know nobody watches this. They should, but they don't, and it's doomed.

It's still vibing for me at the moment, so here are some drabbles. I started a drabble competition in the official forum and did some quickies to start it off, so these are not polished.

Normal service...

..will not be resumed.

At least not for a while.

Sorry about this. Someone said "You should watch Standoff, Gina Torres's new show." and it so happened that the first episode aired that day in NL. And I watched. And it promptly hijacked my brain, because I just love getting my heart stomped on by FOX by getting attached to a doomed show.

So you're unlikely to get much Firefly fiction in the near future. I'll try, but I have other characters babbling in my head right now.

I'm considering 'Notes On The Break Room Table'. The Bones note was a one time thing, but the Standoff team has enough tension going on that I can see a note... or two. See how it goes.
