Part 11

The train was quiet, only occasional coughs or snoring sounds breaking the silence. He remembered that one evening they were together, watching movies, and just hanging. Spike wished he could just go back to that, before all this happened, even if it meant going back to the akwardness and constant bickering. If he’d just seen the signs that something was wrong earlier then he’d have been able to put a stop to it. He knew living in the past wouldn’t help; only the present mattered. He had to find Angel. Well, “better light the candle than curse the darkness”, his grandma used to say, and she was right.

He’d already looked through the coach he was in, so that left the rest of the train. Spike decided to search through every coach in order, Angel had to be in one. After peeking in few coaches, he spotted Angel; the brunet was fast asleep, leaning his head on some guy’s shoulder. Spike saw red – who the fuck was that guy? ‘Bloody ’ell, ’m gonna give ‘im a new face if he touches Angel!’ He didn’t understand why Angel was being so friendly with the man; he didn’t even know him. The guy was asleep too, and Spike approached quietly; he just wanted Angel to come with him, no need to wake up the other one.

“Angel...luv? Wake up,” Spike whispered, shaking Angel’s shoulder gently. Angel stirred in his sleep a bit but didn’t wake up.

“Fuckin’ ’ell....aren’t you hard to wake up, pet?” he snorted, only realising a moment after that he’d been kinda loud. He glanced over to the other guy, but he was still sleeping like a baby. The guy was slightly taller than Spike and heavily built. He had a short, blond hair, which made his head look even bigger than it actually was. Spike snorted at his own little joke. All in all, there was no way that Angel could favor that guy over Spike, or was there? Spike swallowed his sudden urge to punch the guy in the face and shook Angel again, a little harder this time. Angel stirred once again, but this time his eyes fluttered open, and he was staring at Spike with a confused frown on his pretty face.

“Spike...what?” he started, but couldn’t quite finish before he felt soft lips touch his own, gently like a butterfly’s wings, and then suddenly more demanding, slick tongue stroking his lips and begging for entry. Angel opened his mouth to Spike, responding to his passion with a matching one. He couldn’t get enough of how Spike tasted, sweet and sour at the same time, and just Spike. Just then he realised how much he’d missed Spike; it all hit him with such intensity that it left him breathless. Spike was straddling his lap now, and stroking Angel’s sides with slow, soothing motions. Angel could feel his cock responding to that, to Spike’s heat, and he felt Spike’s erection pressing against his thigh.

“Mmm....so good, luv....missed you so much,” Spike murmured, twisting his fingers in Angel’s soft, brown hair – he wanted nothing more than to devour him, but he had to move slowly here; he couldn’t risk scaring Angel away.

“I...missed you too...it’s just that I...” Angel whispered, not finishing his sentence. He was twitching nervously and staring at his fingers resting on both sides of Spike’s hips.

“You really scared me, you know? How could you even think that I wouldn’t come looking for you?... ‘Cause, I will...always,” Spike whispered back gently, stroking Angel’s cheek and catching a single tear on its way down.

“I’m sorry, Spike,” was all that Angel managed, before falling silent for the rest of the way. Spike didn’t press it; he asked ‘Jason’ to change places with him and sat there beside Angel, holding his hand and stroking his thumb accros his fingers soothingly until they reached the next stop.

Angel was thinking about his life once again: what a fucked up drama it had turned out to be. He didn’t have a clue where to go after stepping off the train; he’d never been this far from home and LA was a hell of a lot bigger than the little town he’d been living in. Angel didn’t understand his father, why he wanted to hurt him. The thoughts kept filling his head and he felt it would explode from the sheer torture of those memories. He felt dirty, he’d been violated by his own father; there had to be something wrong with him, right? Angel knew he was worth nothing; he’d been told that his whole life. His father wanted him to be a jock, a REAL man, and was furious when Angel tried to tell him that he preferred acting in theatre. He’d yelled ‘Are you a fucking pansy? I swear…you’re no son of mine’. That had really hurt, and eventually Angel had given in to his father’s demands; he’d become a football player instead of a drama student.

Angel glanced at Spike, who was walking beside him silently like he was lost in his thoughts as well. The thing was that he didn’t want to see Spike getting hurt by all this – well, anymore than he already had – and that’s why he had to let him go. But he didn’t say anything to Spike; he knew that he wouldn’t let him go. Angel smiled softly when he found Spike staring at him with that ‘Spike look’, quirked eyebrow and all. He looked so cute when he did that.

“What?” Angel asked, stopping in his tracks to face Spike.

“What were you thinking just now, luv? You looked so worried,” Spike responded with sad voice.

“Nothing....just my life.” Angel turned his head away from Spike when he spoke, not able to look him in the eye; maybe he’d see everything in his eyes, and he didn’t want that to happen. He had to protect Spike from his fucked up life, he deserved better. ‘I’m not good enough for someone like him, why can’t he see that?’ Angel was already planning how to get away from Spike. Not because he wanted to though; he’d give anything to be with him.

Christmas Eve found Spike lying naked amongst the messy sheets on his bed with an arm thrown over his eyes to stem tears of frustration that threatened to spill down his face at any moment. The lingering smell of sex with Angel was still in the air and was a harsh reminder to Spike at how a few hastily spoken words could cause such misery. The blond vampire listened as Angel’s Viper roared to life outside the small cottage that they had rented for a quiet getaway and when he heard the tires scream as Angel pulled away, Spike let his tears fall.

The big engine in Angel’s sports car growled in protest when he floored it, urging the metal beast down the mountain and into hairpin turns on the unfamiliar road, uncaring about a destination. Snow had just started to fall but the big vampire paid no attention as he drove erratically, thinking about Spike’s cutting words.

‘This the part where ya kick me in the arse and tell me ta fuck off, in’nit?’ Spike had asked sarcastically when Angel tried to hold him in his arms after they had made love.

Spike’s accusation burned in Angel’s brain like fire and he thumped the heels of his hands against the steering wheel in frustration. He was so confident that he and Spike could rekindle the love they once had as sire and childe that he had brought the blond to the wilderness hideaway for a romantic Christmas holiday. But, after they had hot, passionate sex for the first time in many lonely years, Spike was still skeptical.

“What do I have to do to make my idiot childe trust me again?” Angel wondered out loud, not noticing his car losing traction on the slippery road.

The dip and pull of the Viper’s right front tire onto the shoulder brought Angel back to his senses but he had little time to react before the car plunged down an embankment and head first into a large grove of pine trees. The impact was metal crushing and bone jarring, pushing the engine block into the driver’s compartment, effectively pinning Angel between the airbag and the safety support behind the driver’s seat. Then everything went black.

Spike had wrapped himself around Angel’s pillow, hugging it to his chest like a lifeline to the big vampire, falling into a fitful sleep when he realized that Angel wouldn’t be coming back any time soon. The blond vampire had tried to console himself with the fact that he was still connected to Angel through their blood link and even if they were apart, they were still tied to each other. All he could do now was to wait until Angel had cooled off, then his sire would return, as he always did, when he was in a better state of mind. Before he drifted off, Spike vowed to make amends, if only Angel would come home in time for Christmas.

Tossing and turning restlessly for what seemed like hours, a sudden, sharp rift in his connection to Angel drew Spike to full consciousness and he sat bolt upright, panic setting in as he felt his link to Angel shudder. Clambering out of bed, Spike rushed over to the window, hoping to see the Viper in the driveway, but all that met his eyes was a blanket of white. He placed a shaking hand against the window frame for support and strained to see through the falling snow but even with his vampirc vision, he could only make out icy shadows a few feet in front of him.

“Where are ya, Angel?” Spike whispered softly.

A growing fear that everything was going to Hell in a hand basket if Angel didn’t come back gnawed at his gut, pushing him over the edge to do something. With butterflies in his stomach, Spike padded into the kitchen to the wall phone and hesitantly dialed Angel’s mobile. He had no idea what he would say if the big vampire answered, but making sure he was alright and begging him to come home sounded like a plan.

This is Angel. Leave a message and I’ll get back to you.

“Fuck!” Spike slammed the receiver down on its cradle and dejectedly pressed his forehead against it. “Fuck…”

Angel groaned and awoke to a pounding headache and pain in his legs and chest. He blinked in confusion at his surroundings before the memory of the accident came crashing down and he groaned again. A look at the starred windshield explained his headache and a cursory once over himself revealed only cuts and bruises that had already started to heal, but no broken bones.

Sighing in relief, Angel found that he had enough leeway to extract himself from under the crush of metal that would have killed an ordinary human. With the aid of his vampire’s strength and with a roar of pain, he pulled free from under the twisted jumble of steel, wires and glass. Collapsing over the passenger seat, panting in exhaustion, Angel did not fight as darkness overtook him once more.

The snow had stopped on Christmas morning and the sun was already melting the few inches that had fallen the night before. Spike was up and tending the roaring fire he had going in the stone fireplace, trying to shake the chill from his bones as he struggled to keep from worrying about Angel. He had changed the sheets on the bed and placed small candles around the room, intending to welcome Angel back properly. When that was done, Spike had made a smoke and dash for wood for the small fireplace next to the bed and had placed fresh pine boughs on the mantle for effect.

The cottage was small so Spike was quickly at a loss to keep occupied while the sun shone brightly outside. He kept pacing back and forth like a chained dog, smoking cigarette after cigarette and throwing the used butts into the fireplace. Several times, he had headed to the liquor cabinet and taken out a bottle only to put it back again when he realized that being drunk in front of Angel would not bode well with the dark vampire when he returned.

As an alternative, Spike tried to busy himself with making origami cranes from the foil remnants of his cigarette packets and adding them to the small Christmas tree that sat in a corner of the sitting room. A wry smile crossed his lips as his fingers nimbly folded the papers. The memory of sitting at his mother’s feet when he was a boy, watching intently as she taught him the Oriental art, came back to him and he sighed.

“Happy Christmas, Mum… wherever ya are…” Spike whispered as a lone tear rolled down his cheek.

The purring noise of a huge mechanical beast next to the Viper and the rapping on the driver’s side necromanced window roused Angel from the disturbing sleep he had fallen into while waiting for the sun to disappear so he could go for help. He blinked in bewilderment at first, but then slowly sat up and let out a groan.

“Ya alright, buddy?” a muffled voice asked with concern.

Before he had time to answer, the car door was yanked open, making Angel scramble as far as he could into the passenger seat to avoid being dusted. The driver of the idling snowplow poked his head in, giving Angel the once-over. He smiled in relief when he saw that the vampire looked fine.

“Ya look ok, son, but can’t say the same for yer car,” the grizzled face smiled and held out a helping hand. “Gets dark real quick in these parts, so if yer not hurt and need a ride, be glad ta take ya.”

Angel looked over the man’s shoulder and was relieved to find the sky taking on the reddish hue that signaled nightfall wasn’t far away. He was resigned to the fact that there wasn’t anything he could do about his car until morning, so it was no use going into town for a tow. And, as much as he hated to admit it to himself, he was worried about Spike, hoping that in spite of everything, the blond was still at the cottage so they could salvage what was left of Christmas.

“I’d appreciate that,” Angel said as he took the proffered hand and allowed himself to be pulled free from the wreckage. “Thanks…”

Spike couldn’t wait until he was finally able to go safely outside, setting off down the mountain on foot as soon as the sun slipped over the horizon. Angel’s mobile hadn’t picked up a signal and that worried him. If the big vampire had driven back to Los Angeles, the hills would effectively block any signal and Spike would be stranded, left alone to find his own way home.

“Bloody pounce,” Spike growled to himself as he followed the slippery path toward town. It would be just like his sire to leave him there for spite, thinking it would teach his childe a valuable lesson. Disgusted at the thought and not finding any trace of the Viper after several miles, Spike turned and headed back to the cottage.

It was late and Spike sighed as he lit several candles in the sitting room and kitchen, cursing the sporadic electric that had plagued them since they had arrived. On a whim, he placed a lighted candle near the window so Angel would know he was there, waiting to welcome him back. Then, he headed to the shower, peeling his clothes off carelessly along the way, letting them lay where they fell.

There wasn’t much hot water to be had because of the outage, but Spike didn’t care. He missed Angel so much that he didn’t bother with his usual shower wank and just washed quickly, too miserable to do anything but feel sorry for himself.

Angel thanked the snowplow driver profusely when he was dropped off at the cottage, offering the man a generous tip that was politely refused. With a promise to call the police and a tow truck for the Viper, Angel watched as the big truck lumbered away before he turned and went inside to face up to Spike.

It was dim, but not dark, in the candle glow. Angel looked around with his vampiric vision and had to smile at the little touches Spike had put up. His William could be resourceful when he put his mind to it and Angel’s dead heart filled with pride at the memories of Christmases past when Spike would always decorate a small tree for him, no matter where they called home.

The trail of clothes Spike had left on the floor on his way to the shower caught his eye next. He bent down to pick up each piece, carefully laying them over a chair as he moved toward the bathroom, shaking his head in resignation at his childe’s messiness. Putting one hand on the doorknob, Angel stopped to listen before entering and was horrified to hear Spike sobbing softly.

“Please come home for Christmas, Angel. Please…”

Angel quietly entered and closed the door behind him, but Spike did not seem to notice his presence as he stood shivering under the spray of cold water. Angel was mesmerized by the sight of the small vampire’s alabaster skin shimmering in the diffused light, showing every curve, every muscle in the strong back, followed the sinewy lines down to his round, pert buttocks and he had to stifle a groan.

Even though Spike had showered, Angel could still smell his scent on the blond beauty and the urge to mark and claim him again made his cock swell against his jeans. He toed off his shoes and quickly stripped naked before he got into the tub behind Spike. Reaching around his shivering form, Angel shut off the tap and hugged the blond tightly against his slightly warmer bulk.

“I’m here, Spike,” Angel said quietly as he kissed Spike’s neck tenderly. “I’m here…”

Spike stiffened at the unexpected touch and his breath hitched, but when he realized that it was Angel, he laid his head against the thick body behind him and tried to blink away his tears.

“Me, too,” Angel said softly as he maneuvered Spike around so he could kiss him properly.

Spike closed his eyes and moaned into Angel’s mouth as he clung to the big vampire, hoping if this were a dream that he would never wake up.

The cold air was quickly set into Angel’s bones and he reluctantly broke the kiss. “Why don’t we take this somewhere warmer?” he asked Spike with a slow smile. “Let me show you how much I want you… need you…” Angel took Spike’s hand in his and gave it a light kiss before he brought it down and placed it on his hardened cock.

“Yesss… fuck, yes… Angel…” Spike hissed as he gave the turgid flesh in his hand a gentle squeeze.

Angel smiled and lifted Spike into his arms and carried him out to the sitting room. Kneeling down in front of the fireplace, he gently laid his boy onto the fur rug and kissed him before he stood up to toss another log on the dwindling fire.

“What? It was snowing… and it was slippery…”

Spike gently put a finger against Angel’s lips. “Shh… not important, then, is it? You’re here… safe. Make love to me...”

Spike smiled and picked up his pace. “Your boy… always yours… Sire…”

“Fuck, Will… Spike…” Angel moaned as he dug his fingers into Spike’s hips, thrusting up into the willing body and the ever-tightening muscles around his cock.

Angel carefully moved closer to the fire with Spike still in his arms. He reached over to a nearby chair and pulled a blanket off to cover them as the blond vampire snuggled comfortably against him. Before long, Spike was snoring contentedly and Angel’s eyes were growing heavy with the promise of sleep.

“Merry Christmas, Childe,” Angel whispered softly as he kissed the top of Spike’s blond curls and closed his eyes.
