It's time for THIS post again
This is a community that rates your literary taste.
If you cannot put together a list of twenty books, STAY AWAY.
If you cannot stand to have your taste questioned, STAY AWAY.
If you cannot defend your choices in an intelligent manner, STAY AWAY.

We're going to ask you questions. We're going to try to get you to talk about why you like what you like. Got that? We might be mean, bitchy, cranky or down-right pissy. That's our prerogative as members. Every one of us went through the process of choosing our lists. For most of us, that meant a lot of deep thought about the books we'd read.It meant a lot of whittling down to come up with what we thought were our favorites. NONE of us came up with our lists easily, or on a whim. We all had to put a lot of thought into the process.

If you don't like that idea, STAY AWAY.
If you're "not really interested in joining, but just wanna laugh at us",STAY AWAY.

NOBODY here claims to have read every book ever written. But, Goddammit, the people in this group are some of the most intelligent and well-read people I've ever had the pleasure to meet; people who flat-out love literature, people who want to learn about new books, books they hadn't heard of before. Come here with that attitude, and you'll do fine.

I wouldn't mind something like that in the comm info--so very well put. You should run it by S. and see if she thinks it might belong there.

Wheeeeeeeee! As a bona-fide PhD student and as someone who has studied literature in FOUR!!!!!!!!!1111 different languages, I shall use this opportunity to brag about my personal credentials while ripping apart a community for being pretentious!

Just as a general question: is it no longer clear on the info page that you can respond to comments in your own application?

Here are the first two rules as they stand:

-Immediately after joining you must post your top 20 books (writers also acceptable, but barely). Books can include fiction, short fiction, poetry collections, or non-fiction.
-You may not post/comment in the community until you are accepted, unless it's on your own entry.

Seems fairly clear to me... or should we, in fact, emphasize that you can respond to challenges? On the other hand, anybody who applies without understanding the challenges and replies probably hasn't read the info all that carefully, either. What do you think?

Simple declarative sentences seem to be beyond the grasp of those savants.

there's a ton of applications this morning. yaarrgh.
I need to go away, have a cup of coffee, and then sit down when i'm in a properly nihilistic frame of mind to deal with 'em all.

ah, it's fun as long as you space 'em out. if you figure that we've got the weekend to deal with them, there's probably a couple that'll go quickly, a couple who'll lose interest, maybe one or two diamonds, and the possibility of a massive slagging off. but if there was say, five or six extra apps, yeah, I'd probably soil my trousers.
