daily meaningless noise [21 Aug 2008|12:14am]

These are small mobile blog posts from Twitter. The original function of LJ was to answer the question "What are you doing today?" Twitter answers the question "What are you doing right now?" The former is of course the integrand of the latter. I post these to LJ because I want to archive them better and I want my LJ friends to know what's going on with me even when I don't have time/energy to post.

14:04 the disadvantage of having all my classes on MWF is having all my classes on MWF. visual design earlier was exciting, now HCI time.

15:32 favorite internet neologism of the day: "bleg = blog + beg"

15:38 today has been a) sort of a clusterfuck b) an anticlimactic first day of school. I hope this isn't an omen.

15:39 jammed bike lock, had to take bike 2 class, which turned out 2b canceled. passerby then fixed lock by banging it against bike. lesson here?

16:14 quoting an lj convo: "...No, all I got right now is interpretive dance."

16:15 why is it that i don't tweet for a long time and then tweet in bulk?

16:45 oooh oooh oooh what a little moonlight can do! (name this tune!)

17:01 the ultimate self-referential web 2.0 loop: when your blog tweets announcing that your tweets for yesterday have been republished.

Olympics [18 Aug 2008|02:55pm]

Olympics!!!! Who else thinks Oksana Chusovitina wuz robbed???? I don't have a trained eye in gymnastics but from what I saw she totally deserved the gold medal! It's still a hell of an achievement for her, at 33 to get a silver medal in a sport that favors fourteen year olds. What a wonderful moment for her and I hope her son got to be there to see his mom kick some serious vaulting ass!

Talking More Olympics )

This schedule is a (panda) bear and has left me no time for Mad Men. Thank Time Warner for On Demand!

Wiped Out, in a Good Way [17 Aug 2008|08:01am]

[ mood | exhausted ]

The Olympics is wiping me out and I'm reminded why I can't get into regular seasonal sports...doing this every night would kill me. For the record, I do watch figure skating in season but it's usually only on every other week so there's time to recover.

Olympics blather )

I love that people are watching these Games!!! It feels like the Olympics used to feel when I was a kid and you knew everyone else was watching the same thing. These are real people doing superhuman things and no writers, no special effects team will ever beat that.

06:11 moooooooooving.

07:26 being kind of nervous that none of the people who promised to help me move will help as none of them have contacted me recently.

07:46 Georgia Tech didn't pay me. Again. Color me surprised and thrilled. Do I look like a volunteer?

11:07 I am on my fourth move of the year and I'm SICK of it. I'm doing it so half-assedly.

12:06 packing half-assedly and feeling terrible about myself. three more goddamn hours until I move, ten until she gets home. why even bother?

Just saw Pathology. It was ok; i guess. I wonder if the part where Alyssa Milano's  naked, if it's actually her--bc supposedly she said she'd never do nude scenes again.

whatever, i expected it to be better.

The week ends ... [15 Aug 2008|01:51pm]

laila_angel

.. sweet Friday.

Sausage & Egg sandwich, and a bottle of Irn Bru.
(Can you say "What diet?!")

After a week of dark clouds and heavy rain -
the British summertime outside and the weather inside my brain
- Friday has brought sunshine to the sky and a lightness of mood with it.

I've almost skipped around the hospital today,
compared to the stomping I produced in the corridors yesterday.

And I was glad to smile at everyone I passed, and isn't a smile infectious?

I'm always aware that, for me, this nice feeling has a habit of being extremely brief,
but 'hello!', today it's here and I'll bask in it for as long as I have it.

P.S. I have a week off starting next Friday evening ;) - 23rd to 31st August - nine whole days away from work! =) I hope to catch up on a lot of things, as I always plan, particularly here and with friends in general, online and offline.
Miss you, love you, never forgetting you - yes, YOU! xxx

Strictly Sports - Chapter 3 [14 Aug 2008|10:24am]

lostinthecircus

It's validated, and as of now, I have up to chapter five written, along with some future scenes written out. I'm really impatient that way. I can't wait till I get to the ... nevermind. :) Heheh.

Here's an excerpt of chapter 2, though. There are few things sadder looking than an angry-as-all-hell teenage girl, let alone one that’s drenched half with sweat and half with mud. But I manage to fall into that small category, the exclusive club of ready-to-kill-with-my-bloody-bare-hands-mad, the kind they say serial killers are. But that’s what I am; probably as mad as Sirius Black, and perhaps even a bit more. Because I was out for blood, namely, Nick Prosser’s blood.

They Don't Hand Out Medals for Bitchiness, Do They? [14 Aug 2008|08:00am]

fleegull
[ mood | aggravated ]

Jennifer Sey is a bitter, bitter, bitter woman. Jennifer was an elite American gymnast. One of those who showed so much promise when she was a wee wisp of a girl. She won the US Nationals in 1986 but had such a bitch of a time getting there that she never bothered to try out for the Olympic Team and retired. She wrote a book called Chalked Up detailing the hell she went through and you can see many of the interviews she has given promoting it here.

The bitterness, though, really comes out in a blog entry titled The Beast for Salon Olympics Daily. A small portion:

I am the most annoying person to watch the Olympics with. I'm a condescending former elite athlete who loathes the armchair fan. I love sports. I love athletes. I hate fans.
......

As much as viewers love watching these athletes defy human expectations, I'm not convinced that those who haven't ever endured the trials and brutal training regimen required to compete at the Olympic level really understand what is entailed.

In watching a sport like gymnastics it's easy for a viewer to see that she couldn't perform a double twisting double back like Shawn Johnson on the floor exercise. But in sports like swimming or track, where the athletes are engaged in activities that regular people do all the time, I think there are many who believe it's simply a little extra commitment that sets these athletes apart from the hoi polloi.

I get the feeling that regular folks believe that if they just had the heart to stick with it through 10th grade, they too would be celebrating on the medal stand in Beijing along with Michael Phelps and Dara Torres. But maybe I'm defensively projecting.

I think I can safely speak for every person on the planet: Honey, we damn well know that we couldn't do what Olympic athletes do! That's why the Olympics are so special, we know that it takes incredible will and sacrifice to even qualify and that we could never get to that level. That's why we watch because we are awed at these athletes, we cheer them on to do what we can't because it is beautiful, because it is thrilling but above all, because they are human, made of the same stuff we are and they can fly, or run like the wind, or swim like a dolphin. We see this and we are moved and brought a little bit closer together. Pray tell, who would these athletes be performing for were it not for the fans? What gyms would they be training in (at least in the US) were it not for all of those kids who took class a few times a week?

BTW: Best comment after the article:

Yeah...

... I feel the same way about ex-athletes who say they write.

The man in my icon (courtesy of [info]fialleril) is Benjamin Boukpeti from Togo. He won the bronze medal in whitewater rafting and it was a surprise win for everyone, including him. I watched this live and it was a wonderful moment, he broke the paddle when he saw his time! He was delightful, humble and grateful...Ms. Sey could learn a lot from him.

My parents mailed me my extra long sheets from undergrad to fit the beds at GT. I saw a package for me on Tuesday evening on the porch when I was flying out the door late for a meeting and didn't have time to bring them into the apartment (in retrospect I should have thrown them in the front room). When I got back from the meeting later that night, they weren't there. I can only conclude that they've been stolen.

I am wondering if anyone has any they might want to sell me, or knows of somewhere they might be picked up cheap.
